Chapter I

PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Teachers are considered as the engineers of the nation. Without the teachers, there

will be no professionals in the country. Teaching profession was once viewed as a ‘low

stress occupation’ and they have been envied for tenure, workloads, flexibility and other

perks such as local and foreign trips for study and conference. The world today which we

live and work is surrounded by many challenges and trials especially to the teachers. How

well the teacher handle challenges can enhance one’s life, since it is stimulating and

recommencing. But when a teacher faces challenges poorly, this response precipitates to

a stress that is potentially dangerous to his performance and health. However, some

recent studies suggest that teachers in primary, elementary, secondary, and college or

universities are the most stressed occupational group.

Teachers have been the driving force in facilitating and assessing the learning,

playing a vital role in education and care of students, who are to become the professionals

in the future. While teaching has been found to be one of the most important jobs of a

country, it is also one of the most stressful jobs compared to other occupations (Adams,

2001, as cited by Mingoa, 2017). Mingoa also pointed out that teachers especially in

basic education perceived to cause them stress are a combination of work related. These

stressors are very high level and vulnerability to stress were relatively high. Teachers in

this study have common coping strategies in overcoming the stressors above mentioned.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the procedures and different approaches used by the

researcher towards the attainment of its objectives. This portion discusses the different

processes involved which include the following: the research design with the layout of

procedure, materials needed for this study, general procedure, methods of data collection,

and the appropriate statistical tools that will be used to test the reliability of results of this

study.

Research Design

This study made use of a descriptive-correlational study that will examine the

stress and coping behaviours among full-time teachers of Villamor College of Business

and Arts academic year 2018-2019. Theory derived from this study was based on

observations of facts and figures. It is also employed statistical measure to prove the

correlation between the variables and how they affect each other. A proposed seminar to

be developed after the research conduct. This program will help the teacher in improving

their strategies when facing common stressors and they may develop coping behaviours

that could counter punch these stresses.

Figure 2 is a schematic diagram that shows the variables of the study-stress and

coping behaviour’s. It also presents the respondents and the procedure that served as the

researcher’s guide in pursuit of the study goals.
