Introduction
Welcome to my Classroom Management Portfolio! This portfolio will visualize how I

plan to run my future classroom. As you look further in, you will see activities, ideas and

strategies I will use to ensure my classroom is running efficiently and effectively. These ideas,

activities and strategies will keep the students engaged and find joy in learning while benefiting

me as well. This plan is aimed towards a science class for 2nd graders. I will be covering my

classroom schedule, first day of school activities, ways to keep students motivated and engaged,

expectations and procedures for the classroom as well as other areas in the school, and my

discipline system. This project is important to me and my future classroom because I plan on

using it in my classroom to help me stay on track and run my classroom efficiently while helping

me figure out what I need to do differently for the next year and so on.

Philosophy
My classroom philosophy is to provide a safe place for my students to feel welcomed and

cared for, by me, also figuring which way of learning they enjoy and works best for them. The

theorists I have chosen to run my classroom by is Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs and Gardner’s

Multiple Intelligence theory. My philosophy relates to these theorists because of my want for my

students to be motivated and enjoy learning by figuring out what kind of learning they like best,

kinesthetic, interpersonal, verbal-linguistic, logical-mathematical, naturalist, intrapersonal,

visual-spatial and musical, and to make sure my students basic needs are met so they can move

up to self-actualization starting with physiological , safety, love and belonging, and esteem. It is

important to me to gain my students trust so they feel comfortable with me as well as other

classmates to provide a safe, inviting and loving learning environment.

Parent Handbook
Instead of the first Monthly Newsletter being sent out over email, I will send a Parent Handbook.

It much easier for them to put it on their refrigerator, or keep it in the car, and with bright colored

paper, they won’t miss it. On the first day of school I will send out a survey asking the parents is

they like a paper handout or an email for the Monthly Newsletter.

All About Me Worksheet

This All About Me page is a great back to school activity that allows the teacher, and their

classmates, to get to know your student. I didn’t choose a worksheet that is content related

because I didn’t want my students to get nervous and worked up over a trying to get a right

answer. It is meant for a ‘It’s time for school’ transition before learning about new procedures.

This activity helps them become more comfortable with the class to be able to tell everyone little

bit about themselves.

Extra Worksheet/Activity
Since this worksheet will be introduced later in the day and they’re getting used to being back at

school, I thought the greater than and less than worksheet would be a great way to brush up on

what they learned when they were in first grade but challenge them a little more with using

bigger numbers. This activity and the Would You Rather activity will be used when we have

extra time still in class. On the first day of school it is very unpredictable, so we have to be

prepared and have extra activities just in case.

Classroom Environment
Classroom Layout- 10
Mailboxes/I Wish I Knew-11
10

Classroom Layout
My three classroom layouts hold the

same items but are in a different

location. I really want my classroom to

be open and inviting. The third layout

isn’t my favorite because it seems a

1)
little more crammed than the other

two. I really like as soon as you walk

in, you have the shelves so the students

can put up their backpack and head

straight to their desk. The teachers

desk should be located at the front of

2)
the room because you have a chance to

watch all of your students and can

navigate from the whiteboard, which

would be where the projector is and

your desk in a timely manner. I believe

having ana open classroom can prevent

3)
a lot of accidental conflicts such as a

student becoming frustrated with

another for pushing their chair on

accident. It also will feel more

comfortable to the student if there is

space.
11

Mailbox/I Wish My Teacher Knew

This is an activity that not every student has to do but is more than welcomed to. It gives m a

chance to figure out how to help a child if something has been off or if they have been acting out.

I believe this will help my classroom environment tremendously because if the students learn to

trust me and know I’m always going to support them, I can build a relationship with each and

every student to help them succeed in my class and promote a positive classroom environment.

Classroom Procedures
List of Procedures- 13
Lineup- 14
Hand signals- 15
Bathroom Pass- 16
13

List of Procedures
1. Arriving to class and placing backpack, lunch box and jacket where they belong.

2. Lineup and transitions for specials, lunch, hallway, recess

3. Bathroom procedures with whole class

4. Bathroom procedures for an individual

5. Transitions during stations

6. Pencil/Crayon Procedures

7. Classroom Library check in/out

8. Using technology in classroom

9. Clean up procedure

10. Classroom Managers

11. Attention getters

12. Voice levels

13. Fire drills/Lockdown

14. Classroom injuries and location of first aid kit

15. Dismissal Procedure

14

Line-up Procedure
The line up procedure is very important, whether your walking down the hall to specials or

exiting the building for a fire drill. If the students were to run around and not be in a line they

could be at risk for injury, disturbing other classrooms and misbehaving. My Line-up

procedure starts with saying a little song “If you’re ready for the hall tap your toes, if you’re

ready for the hall tap your nose, there’s no talking at all when we’re walking down the hall, if

you’re ready for the hall lips go close.” To make sure we have the 4S, Silent, Still, Straight,

Slow. Having this procedure will ensure less misbehavior and accidents.

15

Hand Signals
Another procedure that is important for keeping your class efficient, is hand signals. They

give the student a way to communicate without having to interrupt the lesson or instructions

given by the teach. They picture of what the signs mean will be placed at the front of the

room above the white board so the students can see them easily and know where they are at

all times. The hand signals I will use are the ones in the example below.

16

Bathroom System
The last important procedure is the bathroom passes. I believe signup sheets aren’t as

efficient because the teacher has to keep checking to see if people are actually waiting for the

other person to come back. The push lights are obvious to see if someone is using the

restroom because you see a glowing light. Students won’t have to ask if someone is in the

restroom because they would already know by the glowing light.

Classroom Discipline
List of Expectations- 18
Classroom Constitution- 19
Discipline Hierarchy- 20
Cool Down Cubes-21
18

List of Expectations

1. Come to class prepared and ready to learn

2. Be kind to one another

3. Be respectful to other teachers and classmates

4. Be a leader and a role model

5. Keep hands and feet to ourselves

6. Help one another

7. Listen to classmates and to the teacher when speaking to you

8. Be mindful of what you say

9. Do your best!

10. Start every day with a smile!

In my future classroom, I would like to have my expectations written out similar to this but have

the students help me come up with some too. It’s important to your students for their instructor to

follow rules to because we are their role models and they look up to us.
19

Classroom Constitution
Setting classroom rules is detrimental when running a classroom. My favorite idea is to set a

classroom constitution to hold not just the students but the instructor accountable as well. When

students see their teacher follow rules and promote good behavior, the students will follow. After

creating the classroom constitution, the students and myself would sign it to show we are will not

break the contract.

http://mrsayalaskinderfun.blogspot.com/2012/09/freedom-week-constitution-day.html
20

Discipline Hierarchy
When establishing a discipline hierarchy, it is important to take into consideration the minor

misbehaviors versus the misbehaviors that require attention. I will address misbehavior

depending on if it is minor (tapping a pencil, getting out of seat to throw trash away) and if it

reoccurs or causes a distraction than it is a verbal warning and so on. This is just an idea of how I

would like my discipline hierarchy to go until I receive new ideas from fellow teachers.

Cool Down Cubes

Like the Cool Down Corner, the Cool Down Cubes have different methods on them that the

student can choose to do when they are angry or upset to reflect on their behavior and calm

down. When the child is going through an episode he/she can simply go to the cool down corner

and pick a cube to follow and assist them in whatever they may need.

Warm and Fuzzies Jar

A way to keep the students motivated is the Warm and Fuzzies Jar. Every time I see someone

implementing helping a classmate, good behavior or doing a nice gesture, I will put a puff ball

into the jar. One they fill their jar, they can choose from different activities like take your shoes

off, eat lunch with the teacher, sit in the teachers chair, switch seats for the day, get a prize out of

the treasure box, or lead a game.

24

Note to Guardian/Parent/Student

When a student is really improving in class whether by behavior or content, I would like to give

a handwritten note to show appreciation to the student for working so hard. Receiving notes that

appreciate you for hard work are so rewarding and it’ll also be there as an example of me

showing support to the student. It is also a way to communicate to the parents about their child’s

progress.

Classroom Engagement
GoNoodle- 26
Brain Breaks-27
26

GoNoodle
GoNoodle is great when transitioning into a new subject because it gives the students a little

break for their brain. It has many ways to give your students a break, dancing, educational videos

and even a relaxation station for when my students are too rowdy, I can change their focus back

to the new lesson.

27

Brain Breaks
After a long day of learning students can get bored and become tired and start misbehaving. In

order to regain their focus, they need a brain break. There are different ways to engage them, but

my favorite way is to get them up and get moving.
