OVERVIEW
How does Augmented Reality aid in the increasing of
tourism.

The project plans to create a miniature world within the

virtual world where the player would be able to examine
the buildings in the world closely. It also allow players
to explore more about a certain destination. The app
would be helpful in providing additional information
and the history about the architecture. Learning while
travelling, why not?

The app aims to experiment on how the addition of

superimposed world would affect the real world.

OBJECTIVE

MAIN INSPIRATION The main objective of the project is to introduce the cultural
buildings of Malaysia to the world through a interactive
My biggest inspiration for creating this project was by a
experience.
Studio Ghibli’s animation, ‘Castle in the Sky’.
I would also like to merge the lines between the real and
virtual world through this project.

PLAN B
The more novel side of the app is for the buildings to act as
an imaginative world. The players would be able to use the
virtual space as an adventure . If so, then I would be adding
a character that woull walk around the world, giving players
narrative stories.
However, there would not be any interactive feature available
for plan B

AUDIENCE
The users are mainly focused on young adults.

BUILDING INSPIRATIONS
HISTORY
According to Hisour.com, the architecture
in Malaysia is a combination of several
styles, as it was under the influence of the
colonization of a lot of countries before it
was an independent country. The variety of
architecture makes it interesting to look at.

MIND MAPS

GUIDE

STEP 1
Player open the app
and scan surrounding.

STEP 2
Wait for the world to
appear. The user could
interact through
different inputs.

STEP 3
Enjoy learning about
the history through
audio and visual
feedbacks.

Mindmap to guide the user interaction. The player ‘s

interaction are free based on their movement.

6
3D MODEL MOODBOARD
The inspiration for the models
were isometric 3D buildings.
A more simplified looking
building as well which would
enable a shorter loading time
for the application. Low poly
models more user friendly
and characterized compare to
photo-realism models.

7
ARTBOOK MOODBOARD
I set up a inspiration board as a style
guide for the artbook.
The style I was going for was a minimalist
and industrial feel. I planned for that
this would be a accompany theme for
the theme of the works, which is an
architecture theme.

8
ROUGH DRAWINGS
I sketched different
achitectures to find the
best buildings that would
fit together the best and
atmosphere of the world.

I was also trying to flashed

out the overall layout of the
scene with different colour
combinations.

10
PLATFORM DESIGN
This were some platform I did. I had this idea
where everybuilding will be enclosed within a
platform that floats in the real space.

The first two was designed as if the buildings

was enclosed within a glass case.

I choose this as this has the most
modern looking. The glowing platform
also provided extra lighting to the
scene.

! IMAGE REFERENCE

VISUAL DEVELOPMENT
For the first building, I decided to go with the Malay
traditional building.

The traditional Malay house is a timber house raised

on stilts. It is basically a post and lintel structure with
wooden or bamboo walls.

Yee Jing (S3642614)

14
I made a simple rough layout of
the scene and I am planning to
try out other layout placement
within the 3D space.

17
VISUAL DEVELOPMENT
The second buildig was a heritage street house based
in Penang, Malaysia.

The houses are examples of British colonial

architecture back from the 19th century. It was a Straits
eclectic-style (Eastern and Western fusion style).

Yee Jing (S3642614)

18
The building was build to kep
it as simple as possible. Some
detail objects such as plants
and bicycle are added to give
the scene a bit more lively
atmosphere.

VISUAL DEVELOPMENT
The third building was Tian Hou Gong(吗镑P ), a
Chinese temple.

The building are built by early Hainanse settlers as a

temple. This was one of the three altars that was in the
building.

Yee Jing (S3642614)

22
I wanted to keep the building as
symetrical as possible. Lantern
with different brightness are
added to give the building more
variation in. Greenery in the
form of bamboo trees are add
as the fit to the description of
the building the most.

VISUAL DEVELOPMENT
The last building was Petaling street, a market square
area.

The area has been there since mid-19th century . It

was filled with shophouses with the main entrance’s
being an oriental-style archway.

Yee Jing (S3642614)

26
I decided to just building the
entrance which was also what
it was well known for as well. I
added one buildng to each side
to try and recipricate the feel of
the area.

TECHNICAL PROCESS

3D object is build in blender.

Export object as .fbx file .

Import the object into

Adobe Aero. Tweak the
placement of the object.

Add animations/interactions
to the object.

Render the project. It takes

around 5-10 minutes to While I was researching the apps, I found that although
finish rendering it. Unity allows more freedom for the creation of AR
projects, Aero (which supports IOS devices) are more
stable.
For that reason, I choose to use Aero to built my project.
