ABOUT ME:

My name is Daniel McCarthy, and I am an illustrator/designer just finishing the final year of my
degree. I am an experimental artist with a passion for interactive and innovative design. I have a
broad range of experience in different software and practices spanning both 2D and 3D.

Two years ago, Gavin Day came to my university class and looked over one of our projects
from start to finish. For that project I created an interactive poster involving a projector with
gears that I had built.

Gavin told me at the end of that project that what I had created is the kind of ideas that are
needed in the industry. This was an incredibly formative time for me as a designer. It really
inspired me to push myself and learn new skills that allow me to curate more unique
experiences through my design.

PROJECT PORTFOLIO
AR Robots

Each robot for this project targets a different audience with a niche application in mind.

They utilise anthropomorphic motifs of humanoid features as well as animalistic intimidation and companionship.

AR DIGITAL VIDEO
1. The 3D Security Imager is inspired by shopping centre security riding segways and the eye motif is characterised by the
peacock to dissuade criminal activity.
The deploying surround cameras come from a technology called “photogrammetry” used to create detailed 3d
photographs of a subject.
2. The Office Assistant uses a futuristic characterisation of a virtual assistant.
Waiters/Waitresses and Desk toys played a large role in the niche theming of this robot, and it is meant to deliver a
calming mannequin-esque presence to a room.
3. Piggy Bank ATM is a modernised piggybank inspired by cutesy pet like toys of the early 2000 like Tamagotchi.
The goal being to ease children into adopting digital banking in a safe environment. (I DON’T KNOW IF THIS
SECTION IS NEEDED)

Lunar Armillary Projector

The goal of the projector was to create an interactive living poster that displayed the phases of the moon through methods akin to
real life.

As the central cog turns, the moon is gradually eclipsed by the earth with each moon phase marked on the poster.

Every full rotation of the moon, the date cog is turned by a single tooth gear which highlights the dates of each full moon throughout
that year.

Typographic Playing Cards
These typographic playing cards have a different font derived from each suit regarding classification and style.

Each suit contains letters to spell that suit with duplicate letters on the joker cards.

The allocation of royalty cards is determined by the frequency of the vowels used in the English language.

The card back contains a mixture of dates denoting significant historic moments for playing cards.
