TYPES OF Digital Media

DEFINITION

What is DIGITAL – MEDIA?

A form of electronic media where data is stored in
digital (as opposedto analog) form.
Digital Data
• Computers are digital devices, meaning they perform all calculations using ones
and zeros. This method of computing is referred to as the "binary system," and is
the heart of all digital technology. Devices such as hard drives, CD recorders,
and Mini DV camcorders are digital devices, and therefore record data digitally,
as ones and zeros.
Analog Data
• VCRs, tape players, and record players, on the other hand, are analog devices.
This is because they record data linearly from one point to another. Imagine a
bumpy line moving from left to right -- that is what an analog audio recording
would look like. Analog devices read the media, such as tapes or records, by
scanning the physical data off the media.
EXAMPLES OF DIGITAL
MEDIA
DIGITAL ART
Digital art is a term used to describe art that is made or
presented using digital technology

FIRST DIGITAL ART
• Andy Warhol created digital art using
a Commodore Amiga( picture below) where the
computer was publicly introduced at the Lincoln
Center, New York in July 1985. An image
of Debbie Harry was captured in monochrome
from a video camera and digitized into a graphics
program called ProPaint. Warhol manipulated
the image adding colour by using flood fills
What is digital art?

• Digital art is an artistic work or practice

that uses digital technology as part of the
creative or presentation process. Various
names have been used to describe the
process, including computer
art and multimedia art. Digital art is itself
placed under the larger umbrella term new
media art.
DIGITAL ART

• Digital art can be purely computer-generated or taken

from other sources, such as a scanned photograph or an
image drawn using vector graphics software using
a mouse or graphics tablet.

• The techniques of digital art are used extensively by the

mainstream media in advertisements, and by film-
makers to produce visual effects.
• The use of computer applications to create or contribute
to images in art, printing media, video games, films,
televisions programmers, etc.
• This is far safer than physical effects
Computer • Involves using specialized software to create computer
images. (adobe photoshop and Illustrator, Sketch,
generated Affinity Designer, Inkscape, Canva)

graphics • The images can range from a basic company logo to

incredibly sophisticated animations and realistic
computer generated film special effects.
• revolutionized the computer game, movie business and
animation industry.
Digital Painting
DIGITAL PAINTINGS
• It adapts traditional painting medium such
as acrylic paint, oils, ink, water colour, etc.
and applies the pigment to traditional
carriers, such as canvas, paper, polyester etc.
by means of computer software driving
printers.
• ARTISTS CAN erase or start over as many
times as they want
• Digital artists end up with one Master File.
This file may be Output as many times as
desired.
• ARTIST USES SAME TECHNIQUES AND
SKILLS HOWEVER general public still
believes that if a computer is involved, it’s a
cheaper product
• Both traditional and digital painters have initial set up costs, but after that,
digital painters never run out of painting supplies or waste art papers due to
unrepairable mistakes
• Hybrid painters sometimes create the Sketch digitally and output it onto a
canvas that will be completed using traditional paint and brushes.
HYBRID
• A modern type of art which work with primary science
and emergency technology. Artists work with fields
such as biology, robotics, physical sciences and
graphics such as speed, gesture, facial recognition
• Primary emphasis is on the process of fusing different
media and genres into new forms of artistic
expression
"REGENERATIVE RELIQUARY" by Amy Karle, 2016 bioart sculpture of
hand design 3D printed / bioprinted on microscopic level in trabecular
structure out of pegda hydrogel to create scaffold for human MSC stem
cell culture into bone.
HYBRID ART CONTINUED
• Artist Amy Karle creates artwork using the body to
explore what it means to be human through a unique
negotiation of art, design, science and technology.

• Karle said: “We are at an exciting time where we no

longer need to turn to inanimate materials like metal,
fabric, or paint to make an object. We can use actual
living cells and tissue as materials to build with. The cell,
“nature’s building block” can be the basic structural unit”.

DIGITIZED ARTWORK

• This allows artists to get their work online by

uploading images to websites, blogs, online
galleries etc.
• Artists can sell original works, and sell digital
copies of original designs enabling new
avenues of selling their work
• Makes use of a scanner and a program like
adobe illustrator to convert artwork into their
digitized format
2D VS 3D

• 2D computer graphics reflect how you might draw using a pencil

and a piece of paper. In this case, however, the image is on the
computer screen and the instrument you draw with might be a
tablet stylus or a mouse.
• 3D computer graphics is where the screen becomes a window into
a virtual environment, where you arrange objects to be
"photographed" by the computer.
2D VS 3D ANIMATION
Disadvantages of digital art

• Sometimes the equipment stand in your way when creating (e.g. unintuitive
distance between the movement of the hand and the cursor on the screen, small
workspace, limited capabilities of the software), you need to spend a lot of
money (powerful PC, then electricity bills).
• All the various tools that have a totally different "feel" in the real world are
merged into a single pen. No matter how big the stroke, you always draw with a
small tip. It results in using the same movement of the hand for drawing and
painting.
• The "undo" option tempts you to remove your mistakes instead of looking for a
creative way of fixing them. It's faster and more convenient, but it deprives you
of a chance for a valuable lesson.
• All of these powerful tools (pencils, hard brushes, soft brushes, texture
brushes, photo brushes, dodge/burn, blur/smudge, pen, and whatnot) are at
your fingertips. It may be tempting to try them all at the same time to get the
effect you're not able to get with one tool. However, if it comes from poor
skills, it may become a crazy hunting for the "easier" tool—instead of
mastering one at a time.
• You get all the colours without having to mix them, and hence, without
understanding them.
• You're tied to your workstation.
• Your art can be easily stolen and reproduced.
• Your art can't be touched—it exists in the form of digits. When converted to a
printed form, it may lose some of its vividness.
DIGITAL AUDIO
This technology is applied to record sound and captures how sound generation is
done. Audio playback is done and allows for further mixing of sounds to create new
tracks. It is useful in the recording, manipulation, mass-production and distribution
of sound.
Digital music,

Ringtones,

Sound effects;
DIGITAL MUSIC
• Music that has been recorded in or converted to a digital format.
• One of the most well-known physical sources of digital music is the compact disc
• The basic principle of how this works is that a laser reads the surface of a CD which
contains pits and lands. The information on the CD changes the reflected power of
the laser beam which is measured and decoded as binary data ( 1 or 0).
• What is Digital Music
Ringtones

• Music/Sound that has been recorded for mobile phone usage for call or text
alerts.
SOUND EFFECT
A sound that is artificially created or
recorded to be used to create a feeling.
The function of sound effects is three
fold:
• simulating reality
• creating illusion
• mood

ANIMATION

The process of creating motion and shape, change illusion by means of rapid
display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other.

STOP ANIMATION
An animation technique used to make a physically manipulated object or person appear to move on its
own.
ANIMATION LOGO
ANIMATION ADVERTISEMENT
Commercial that uses cartoon characters to persuade consumers to buy products or service.
ANIMATICS/ PRE-VISUALIZATION
Animatics are animated storyboards. They are used for various purposes depending on the medium for
which they are being produced. Animatics are used every day in the advertising industry to test
commercials. They're used to preview scenes of live-action films before they are shot. You'll also find
animatics in the pre-production stages of animation and in the video game industry.
MOTION GRAPHICS
Motion graphics are pieces of digital footage or animation which create the illusion
of motion or rotation, and are usually combined with audio for use in multimedia projects.
3D PRODUCT DESIGN
3D product design is the creation of a product in a virtual environment such the product has three
dimensions (height, width, depth).  The result is a digital prototype of your product, one you can
explore in detail.
STORYBOARDING
An illustration of the progress
made in communicating an idea
or scenario. Storyboarding gives
a visual run view of the idea or
concepts being created
STORYBOARDING
CHARACTER DESIGN
CREATE CHARACTERS OR PROPS THAT CAN BE USED TO PROMOTE OR CREATE AN IDEA FOR
GOODS OR SERVICES OR EVEN FOR SOME TYP OF ENTERTAINMENT OR BUSINESS TRANSACTION
SERVICES
MODELLING
Creating the actual design using mock ups, rough drafts and these can be refined in the future or by
progressive attempts. The creator wants to give others an idea of what is being developed.
Modelling is creating a three-dimensional view of the character. In 3D animation it is creating the
character you will map onto a skeleton you will animate. In Stop Motion it's fabricating the puppet. In
traditional 2D animation they use model sheets which show the same character from different angles
and in different poses.
Mobile apps contd.

• Application software which can be created, posted and installed on smart

phones and devices for a user’s convenience.
• Eg. Game apps, music apps, youtube apps, messaging apps, weather,
news, newspaper, mobile Microsoft office, social apps.
• Give an examples of:
• Game apps
• Reference apps
• Multimedia apps
• Productivity apps
• Social apps
MOBILE PHONE and TABLET APPS

•Mobile apps are designed application software for

use on smart phones. These apps work better on
phones. Different phone providers will have apps
developed for its users. Tablet Apps are designed to
work on Tablet devices and Phablets and are like
their mobile versions.
DIGITIAL VIDEO
Unlike traditional analog video, which is captured
frame by frame on a tape, digital video is recorded
digitally, as ones and zeros. Since it is stored in a
digital format, digital video can be recognized and
edited by a computer, which is also a digital device.

Capture, edit, production
• Digital video capture:
• technique used to obtain digital video. We can use
webcams, phone cameras, tablet cameras, cameras on
laptops, surveillance cameras etc.
• Digital video editing:
• Using technology and software to modify , trim, delete and
add special efects such as sound or video effects in the post
production process of video prduction.
• Digital video production:
• creating the finalised video that can be shared and used
publicly or privately. Can be played using video file formats
avi mp4, etc.
Digital Photography (Capture - Production)
Theis is where the image is exposed, captured and stored electronically rather
than on film. Digital images can also be made by scanning other photographic
images.

• Digital Photography Capture – collecting still images from use of high
powered camera recording devices
• Digital photography editing – using software to remove defects in pictures
or use software to add effects and illustrations
• Digital photography production – use special printers to produce digital
photographs on photo quality paper.
ADVANTAGES OF DIGITAL VS FILM

• Digital cameras allow for instant review of images.

• Lower overall costs.
• Digital cameras allow one to view images on the computer or TV and print
them at home using a consumer-grade ink jet printer.
• Digital cameras allow you to change the ISO settings from picture to picture
while ISO (film speed) on a film camera depends on the role of film being used
and cannot be changed from image to image within that role of film.
• No developing or processing fees involved and with the proper software there
are endless ways of enhancing or manipulating the digital images. It is far
easier to correct exposure problems on a digital image than it would be in the
darkroom for a film image.

management
design, development,
.
•  Simply put, web design is the planning and
creation of websites.
• The process of conceptualizing, planning, and
building a collection of electronic files that
determine the layout, colours, text styles,
structure, graphics, images, and use of interactive
Web design features that deliver pages to your site visitors.
• Note that Web design uses many of the same key
visual elements as all types of design.
• also includes more abstract elements such as
usability, ergonomics, layout traditions, user
habits, navigation logic and other things that
simplify the using of websites and help to find
information faster.
WHAT IS WEB DESIGN ? INTRODUCTION TO THE BASICS
Web SITE DEVELOPMENT

• Web Developers take a website design and actually make a

functioning website from it. Web developers use HTML, CSS,
Javascript, PHP and other programming languages to bring to
life the design files. Writing valid HTML / CSS code complies to
current web standards, maximizing functionality, as well as
accessibility for as large an audience as possible.
• To put it (very) simply, think of the WEB design as a non-
interactive “picture” of a website. Developers take that design
and break it up into it’s components. They then either use just
HTML or a more dynamic approach incorporating programming
languages such as PHP to develop the various website pages.

The administration and control of the hardware and
software used in a Web site. There are a variety of
monitoring and analysis tools that report on usage, missing
links and files as well as performance, all of which keeps a
site intact and running smoothly.

Web page
The web page designer or web manager uploads new materials
or changes the content of the web page periodically as well as management
correct issues of crash pages, bug fixes, reload of pages etc.

A CMS (Content Management System) such as WordPress can be

implemented to your web site. A web site driven by a CMS gives you the
ability to edit the content areas of the web site yourself. You are given
access to a back-end administrative area, where you can use an online
text editor. You will be able to edit existing content this way, or you can
even add new pages and content yourself.
