21st Century Technology Based Arts
How do you think painting will be like in the near future? Technology has literally
taken over every aspect of life in the 21st century, and the creative and visual arts have not
been spared. David Hockney for example, had turned his index finger into a paint brush and
his tablet computer into canvas. He lives in Great Britain with his tools in creating art pieces
embracing new technologies and integrating them into his art works. Do you see yourself
belonging to this mode of expression?

Technology-based art is essentially computer-generated or manipulated. The years of

the 20th century into the 21st century witnessed the greatest international transformation in
the world of art. These were the times when many artists strived in embracing new
technology positively moving to the next century. From the array of brush and palettes on a
canvass, artists now employ power to work with manipulating applications to create their
masterpiece which can appear entirely in the range of media whether physical of virtual
mode. Furthermore, as we move into the pathways of technology-based art let us check your
knowledge about the technology-based art today.

What is Digital/ Computer Art?

Digital Art is another form of art that utilizes computer rather than the traditional art
tools. This form of art is important because the creation is already stored on a digital device
that is easier to share in any highest form of art such as animations, drawings and paintings
posted on websites.

Where is computer/digital arts used?

The philosophy of digital art is the study of the nature and appreciative grounds of all
those kinds of art whose production and presentation crucially involves computer
processing. Further, computers are now widely used by people to produce art piece to
mainstream media in advertisement, film makers for visual effects. For example:
Mobile Phone- photos and videos
Digital Photograph (point-in-shoot and DSLR camera)- creating photo art
Computer-Generated-Images (CGI)- used in animate
Videos- (TV and Film) - used in making advertisement, films, documentaries
and games.
What is mobile phone? Mobile phones were purposely created for receiving call or
text messages to aid in communication purposes. Today there are a lot more uses of mobile
phone such as accommodating web browsers, games, cameras, video players and
navigational systems and even used in gathering evidence in court. The use of camera
phones also evolved.
Computer-generated-images (CGI) is using computer graphics especially in movies;
sometimes it is used in the animation in 2D, or 3D form. In a wider scope, a computer-
generated image (CGI) is an image that is created with the use of a computer- based
processor or program. Due to wide access to CGI these images are pervasive- from
billboard advertisements to film productions and photography.
Digital Photography is a form of photography that uses cameras containing arrays of
electronic photo detectors to capture images focused by a lens, as opposed to an exposure
on photographic film. In the early times cameras are confusing due to redundant functions of
its parts. Moreover, there are two innovations in image capture to make the belief fairly true
this are: point-and-shoot and the DSLR (Digital-Single- lens Reflex) cameras. This camera
includes autofocus and automatic functions and settings.
Videos are used for recording, broadcasting, and reproducing moving visual images.
It is also used in online activities purposely for educational, research, especially in engaging
learners.
Some of the basics of learning digital photography
1. Train on the use of the digital  Photographer should be familiar with the
camera camera meeting modes used for calculating
the proper lighting and exposure.
 The shutter regulates the length of time or
exposure that light is allowed to fall on a
digital camera sensor
 The opening hole referred to as stop setting
controls the size of the lens to allow light into
the camera
 The picture’s depth of field or the area of
the image appears sharp

2. Proper handling of digital  Always ensure steady position before

camera taking any shot to void blurred photos.
 Get a tripod or using improvised steady
platform

3. Pay attention to the subject  Avoid placing your object at the intersection
of thirds, it may result to dead center
image.
4. Capture photos from unique  Sit down. Be on the floor to give you a lower
angles perspective and therefore new photo
opportunities. Trees and people, for
example, can tower over you.
 Involve camera work- the movement, focus
and timing. Choose to make these shots in a
wide variety of technique such as:
a. Tilt shot
b. Soft focus shot
c. Backlighting shot
d. Framing shot
e. Eye level-shot
 Panning shot
5. Be active  Find how else can the camera make pictures
according to plan.

Whether you are using camera phone, DSLR camera, or other cameras to capture
images, below are procedures for a good quality image.

1. Choose a good location. An interesting location in your place. This will make your
photo a great one.
2. Check your background. Focus on your chosen subject/concept.
3. Natural light is usually the most effective for any kind of subject. Ideally the best
light for photos is within the sunrise or before the sunset.
4. Avoid taking photos facing the light.
5. Position your subject where you want considering the location, background,
and the source of light.
6. Capture the most interesting, touching, engaging moment or expression.
7. Take a variety of shots showing the main concept/subject you have chosen.
8. Apply the different applications in your phones such as collage, edit,
adjustment, effects, decoration, and tone.
Digital Imaging utilizing Adobe Photoshop
 Digital imaging is the art of creating images using digital camera. Every digitized
image is made up of pixels also called resolution. The more pixels your image
contains, the higher is its resolution. The photos can be edited through the computer
software known as Adobe Photoshop that is created to work with the photographs.
 Digital imaging, can also be utilized in many commercial products as photographs
from a camera, imported into the computer for final editing and printing.
 Digital image capture is the only way to stay ahead of the game with those working
with the press.
 Photo editing Apps- digital photographers have learned their Photoshop basic fast
 Collage Apps like frame magic that allows mixing photos together and the use of
healing brush for removing blemishes, lines including improvement of skin quality
 Camera Phone Apps. Applications that have created revival vintage photography.

Digital Painting
In digital painting, it is highly recommended that you consider some basic concepts to
get started.
1. You will need smart phones/computer/laptop
2. Scanner
3. Paint software such as corel painter, my paint or sumo paint (free), Ibis Pintx, Sketch
pad, Picsart

Pixel art is a form of digital art wherein images are created and edited at the pixel level using a
graphics editing software. What defines pixel art is its unique visual style, where individual pixels
serve as the building blocks that make up the image. The effect is a visual style very similar to that of
mosaic art, cross-stitch and other types of embroidery techniques.
The elements and principles of arts are the foundation of language we used to talk
about. The elements of arts used to create art piece or a composition such as line, shape,
form, space, texture, value, and color. These elements are sort like atoms that serves as
building blocks for creating something. A similar activity when the elements of art are
combined instead of combining hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, in art you have these building
blocks. Elements of art are stylistic features that are included within an art piece to help
the artist communicate. The seven most common elements include line, shape, texture,
form, space, color and value, with the additions of mark making, and materiality.

The Purpose of art

Art has had a great number of different functions throughout its history, making its
purpose difficult to abstract or quantify to any single concept.
Non- Motivated function of art
The non-motivated purposes of art are those that are integral to being human, transcend
the individual, or do not fulfil a specific external purpose
1. Basic human instinct for harmony, balance, rhythm. Art at this level is not an
action or an object, but an internal appreciation of balance and harmony (beauty),
and therefore an aspect of being human beyond utility.
2. Experience of the mysterious. Art provides a way to experience one’s self in
relation to the universe.
3. Expression of the imagination. Art provides a means to express the imagination in
non-grammatical ways that are not tied to the formality of spoken or written
language.
4. Ritualistic and symbolic functions. In many cultures, art is used in rituals,
performances and dances as a decoration or symbol.

Motivated Function of Art

Motivated purposes of art refer to intentional, conscious actions on the part of the artists
or creator. These may be to bring about political change, to comment on an aspect of
society, to convey a specific emotion or mood, to address personal psychology, to illustrate
another discipline, to (with commercial arts) to sell a product, or simply as a form of
communication.
1. Communication. Art, at its simplest, is a form of communication. Illustrative arts,
such as scientific illustration, are a form of art as communication. Maps are another
example.
2. Art as entertainment. Art may seek to bring about a particular emotion or mood, for
the purpose of relaxing or entertaining the viewer. This is often the function of the art
industries of Motion Pictures and Video Games.
3. The Avante-Garde. Art for political change. One of the defining functions of early
twentieth-century art has been to use visual images to bring about political change.
4. Art as a “free zone,” removed from the action of the social censure. Unlike the
avant-garde movements, which wanted to erase cultural differences in order to
produce new universal values, contemporary art has enhanced its tolerance towards
cultural differences as well as its critical and liberating functions becoming a more
open place for research and experimentation.
5. Art for social inquiry, subversion, and/or anarchy the function of art may be
simply to criticize some aspect of society.
6. Art for social causes. Art can be used to raise awareness of autism,
cancer, human trafficking, and a variety of other topics, such as ocean conservation,
human rights.
7. Art for psychological and healing purposes. Art is also used by art therapists,
psychotherapists and clinical psychologists as art therapy. The Diagnostic Drawing
Series, for example, is used to determine the personality and emotional functioning
of a patient.
8. Art for propaganda or commercialism. Art is often utilized as a form of
propaganda, and thus can be used to subtly influence popular conceptions or mood.
In a similar way, art that tries to sell a product also influences mood and emotion. In
both cases, the purpose of art here is to subtly manipulate the viewer into a
particular emotional or psychological response toward a particular idea or object.

What is Film like in the 21st Century
The last period of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st was shaped in
part by new technologies and the expansion of media culture that such technologies
fostered. The digitization of moving image has radically irreparable phenomenon that is
observed in the cinema, this transformation leaved an open field of visual arts.
In the 21st century, filmgoers use the movies as a means of escape, The Hurt
Locker, for example, won the 2010 Academy Award for best picture, and its director; but the
film did only a fraction of the business of James Cameron’s Avatar, which is now, amazingly,
the most successful film and become immersed in a role-playing.

The important elements of film

Along with the literary elements such as plot, setting, characterization, structure,
and theme, which make up the text or screenplay, there are many different film techniques
used to tell the story or narrative. The sound, music, lighting, camera angles, and editing.
What is important is to focus on how all the elements are used together in making a good
film.
