FLOOD SAFETY

Flooding occurs when water overflows over normally dry ground. Floods can occur when strong
rains fall, ocean waves crash on the shore, snow melts quickly, or dams or floodwalls fail.
Flooding can be devastating with only a few inches of water or it can cover a house up to the
roof. Floods can happen in a matter of minutes or over a lengthy period of time, lasting days,
weeks, or even months. Floods are the most common and widespread of all natural disasters
caused by weather.

It is highly recommended that you make a plan to shelter-in-place in your home or make a plan
with friends or family to shelter with them where you will be safer and more comfortable. And
only evacuate to shelters if it is confirmed to be open and if you are unable to shelter at home
or with family or friends.
1. Flood watch means a flood is possible. So, you need to stay tune on your TV or
radio news channels for more information.
2. Flash flood watch means a flash flood is possible. Still stay tune for more news
reports and be prepared to leave for higher ground if necessary.
3. Flood warning means a flood is expected or occurring. Do the disaster plan
mentioned above.
4. Flash flood warning means a flash flood is expected or occurring. Seek higher
ground immediately.

BEFORE
 Establish a family preparedness plan for calamities or specifically for floods.
 Prepare a disaster supply/emergency kit where all necessary things, food, and water
are stored.
 Familiarize your whole area to know where to go in case you need to evacuate.
 Find out if you live in a flood-prone area and whether your house is above or below the
flood stage water level.
 Check the positions of your electric powered appliances
 If there is still time you use sandbags to construct barriers to protect your home.
 Be educated and familiarize different flooding warning signs such as consistent heavy
rains, overflowing rivers or streams, and saturated ground.
 Know the definitions and difference of floods that are mentioned in the news.

DURING
• Avoid moving water.
• Avoid flood waters; water can be contaminated with oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Water
can also be electrically charged from underground or crashed power lines.
• Listen to the news to find out if the community's water supply is drinkable.
FLOOD SAFETY
• Be aware of areas where flood waters have receded. Roads may have weakened and could collapse
under the weight of a car.
• Stay away from downed power lines, and report them to the power company.
• Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.
• Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by flood waters.
• Service damaged sumps, tanks, manholes, and leak systems as soon as possible. Damaged sewage
systems pose serious health risks.
• Clean and disinfect anything that got wet. The sludge left behind by floodwaters can contain
wastewater and chemicals.

During a flood, find safe shelter right away. It is advisable to stay where you are in a safe
shelter, but evacuate or move to higher ground or floor depending on the type of flood.

Stay of bridges over fast-moving water. And keep in mind that just 6 inches of moving water can
knock you down and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.

3.Take pictures of the damage, both of the building and its contents for insurance claims.
4.Seek professional help for food, clothing and shelter if the house goes down.
5.When making repairs upgrade the house so that it is flood resistant.
