AIM OF THE STUDY

The aim of this study is to identify the function of target behavior i.e. nail biting and modify the
behavior by reducing nail biting behavior exhibited by an 18-year-old undergraduate student.

Operational definitions of the target behaviors:


In this study, target behavior is defined as:
“Putting one or more [of the] fingers in the mouth and biting on nail with teeth”

CASE HISTORY
FUNCTIONAL BEHAVIORAL ASSESSMENT

In order to understand the factors controlling the compulsive nail biting functional behavioral

assessment (FBA) was conducted

FBA is a tool that helps to assess the possible function/ cause of the behavior so appropriate

interventions can be applied to modify the behavior.

XY, is a 23 year-old student currently studying in undergraduate program. Client has severe nail

biting problem. Client reported that she had been biting her nails since early adolescence. She

indicated that she had never sought professional treatment for nail biting but that she had

previously tried various self-implemented strategies (e.g., applying nail lacquer), but none was

successful.
