People today spend too much time on personal enjoyment – doing things they like to do – rather

than doing things they should do.

I do not approve of this statement. As far as I know, our living pace is actually getting faster and
tenser since the Industrial Revolution, and this kind of change will only bring us more workloads.
Even if people are really spending lots of time entertaining, it will cause no harm, and there is
definitely no reason not to do so.

People have already spent most of their time working, as five business days a week. The Industrial
Revolution created large cities all over the world, which boosted populations and competitions. It
means everyone has to work harder than before to survive, for example, some Asian children now
arrive schools at seven thirty and leave cram schools at perhaps even midnight.
Life today is easier and more comfortable than it was when your grandparents were children.

This is a reasonable statement and I believe most people would approve of it. Since the Industrial
Revolution, our society has improved greatly in almost every field, such as technology, medical
treatment, and human right. More importantly, there is no sign for this process to stop, but only
signs that it has just started.

First, the giant step in science brought convenience we have never had before. Our grandparents
would need to meet others directly or send a mail and wait for a long time just to ask something.
But now, as most of us have a smartphone, we can contact each other with a small effort in
minutes. Second, a person might die from merely a cold in the past, while some pandemic could
easily eliminate hundreds of thousands of lives. However, doctors nowadays are with better
equipment and understanding, allowing us to survive a longer life.

We are probably experiencing the most essential period of mankind, making our lives more and
more comfortable.
The reading believed the invention of automatic mobiles will bring plenty of benefits. First, it
mentioned smart cars can reduce accidents, since computers will probably be able to control cars
more precisely than humans. Second, because of the same reason, it will also become possible to
pack cars tightly at a high speed and eliminate traffic problems.

However, the lecturer said even the most advanced computer could make mistakes occasionally.
And when they do, the close distance maintained will create much more death than a man-caused
accident. Besides, history has proved once a more convenient vehicle is invented, many people will
change their commuting way. Thus the lecturer contended that as driving become easier, more cars
will be on road, making the possibility of cars driving faster useless.

Finally, the reading claimed smart cars can save our money for repairs by driving the most direct
routes. But the problem doesn't seem to be that simple. According to the lecture, though
autonomous cars may not need repairs frequently, their items such as direction systems and sensors
have a much higher price. So it will cost more for a single repair of smart cars.
A person should never make an important decision alone.

It is often said that a group can do much more than a person, but it doesn't mean we can't make a
vital decision alone. The more is not always the better, sometimes a person with good insights may
come up with an idea better than a group. Besides, too many people discussing the same topic may
cause chaos, since it will be difficult for them to reach an agreement.

Imagine there is a brilliant businessman like Tim Cook, and he is surrounded by a bunch of people
who know nothing about negotiation and management. In this kind of case, he should definitely
make all the important decisions on his own regardless what the others think. Moreover, everyone
has heard stories about some groundbreaking theories that were deemed nonsense then and there.
Should those great scientists didn't decide to ignore the doubts and finish their research, we may
lose plenty of precious findings today.

Asking as many opinions as possible to decide something is a bad idea. Everyone has different
thoughts, and the more people involved, the harder it is to reach an agreement. Thus, in some cases
where time is vital, I do think we can make an important decision alone without notifying others.
