OROPEO, CHRISITIAN P. “Instructional Video Tutorial: A Strategy to Improve

Students’ Performance in Computer Programming”

ABSTRACT

The major objective of the study was to improve the performance of Grade 10

students in computer programming through the use of instructional video tutorials. It

specifically aimed to determine the level of performance of Grade 10 students during

the pre-test, after the post-test and the effectivity of instructional video tutorials in

improving the performance of Grade 10 students in computer programming.

The study utilized 30 students from Grade 10 TLE-ICT specialization as

respondents of the study. Purposive sampling was used in determining the respondents

of the study.

Pre-test and post-test were administered to gather the data needed in the study.

A 40-items test were administered to the students. Google Forms was utilized in

administering the pre-test and post-test for easy tabulation. Then the mean, standard

deviation and percentage were computed. The difference of the mean scores obtained

from the pre-test and post-test was used to determine the effectivity of instructional

video tutorial in improving students’ performance in computer programming.

The results of the study showed that during the pre-test, the highest score

obtained by the students was 14 and the lowest score was 1. This was due to the fact

that the students have limited ideas on how to create SQL statements in Computer

Programming since this specialization is quite new to them. Furthermore, students

obtained a mean score of 8.23 during the pre-test. The result implied that the students

got a very low mark during the pre-test. This may be attributed to the fact that the

complexity of the codes wherein students are having a hard time understanding the

SQL codes. And the result may be attributed to lack of resources like computers,

laptops and lack of computer laboratory activities. Alakeel, et.al, (2013) stated that

students admitted that there were some difficulties in computer programming

environment. These difficulties ranged from access to computer laboratories and finding

bugs or errors in the program. The post-test result showed that some students got a

perfect score of 40 and the lowest score was 31. The increase in the scores of the

students were evident after the post-test as compared during the pre-test. In addition,

the students obtained a mean score of 34.77 after the post-test. The result implied that

the scores obtained by the students were high. This may be attributed to the fact that

the students have undergone intervention through the use of instructional video

tutorials. Munn and Truebano (2015), stated that the availability of video tutorial

increased students’ confidence in performing certain tasks in school. Video tutorials are

proposed as excellent tool as a part of blended approach to teach practical skills. To

determine the effectivity of the instructional video tutorial as an intervention strategy,

the mean scores of pre-test and post-test were compared by getting the difference. The

result showed that there was a difference of 26.54 of the mean scores obtained by the

students during pre-test and post-test. The result showed a positive difference. This

meant that the instructional video tutorial, as an intervention strategy is effective in

improving the students’ performance in computer programming. The result conformed

the study of van de Meij H. et. al., (2016) stated that video tutorials increased both

motivation and performance. In addition, the review condition of video tutorials had

significantly better results for training time, self-efficacy, and scores on an immediate

post-test.

Based on the result of the study, the following recommendations are advised: (1)

Students may utilize the instructional video tutorials as guides in creating complex

programs; (2) Teachers may integrate instructional video tutorials as aids in improving

student’s performance in their field of specialization; (3) The school head may

encourage his or her teachers to develop instructional video tutorials as intervention

strategies in improving learners’ academic performances; (4) Future researchers may

use this as a reference in conducting studies related to this one; and (5) Further studies

need to be done with a larger population.
