Here is a rough draft of the *history* of Baltoi, the fiend I submitted.

The

history covered most of the proposal, and that was my big mistake considering

it is something that the PCs will most likely never find out. Anyway, if

anyone else was wanting to do a write-up of pre-existing fiends, there are

TWO different fiends in the "Chilling Tales" module under the adventure

"Taskmaster's Leash." These two fiends are pre Grand Conjuncture and

pre-VRGtF. They need abilities! Without further waste of time, here's the

rough-and-nearly-useless history of Baltoi. I'm actually going to try and do

a better job on my adventure (oh, it was horrible, and only hindsight -and

the Kargatane- would show me).

I am proposing to detail and hopefully enrich the background of the true

tanar'ri known as Baltoi from PP 45-46 of the module "Adam's Wrath." "Van

Richten's Guide to Fiends" did not mention her, most likely due to her

inactive state.

For her history, I will start out with an explanation of what she did

"wrong" in the Blood War against the baatezu. My idea is that, like all

marilith, she was a general in charge of carrying out the war against the

baatezu. Baltoi was to use a well of many worlds to launch a surprise attack

in one of the nine hells. She ordered various glabrezu to do reconnaissance

and report back to her. After a week, she was informed of various areas, the

two most notably were a pit fiend's lair and a highly specialized training

area; both areas had unpopulated chasms that could offer a silent and

unobserved approach. Within the hour, Baltoi had decided on tactics for

launching her legion at the pit fiend's lair. So skilled and talented was

Baltoi that by the time she had drilled her legion army for four days on how

to attack the compound, they executed the mock attack flawlessly the first

three times on the fifth day. Baltoi allowed her troops to rest, for on the

sixth day, they would attack.

As soon as the command to rest and relax was given, a balor had shown up

with three of his legions saying he had heard of her planned launch on a pit

fiend's lair and the balor demanded that not only his three legions accompany

the war party, but that he would have his best legion follow him as the

vanguard of the assault. The rage inside Baltoi swelled to heights she had

never felt before. Neither the subtle glabrezu nor the hideous baatezu had

made her this angry. She expressed her "concern" over the balor's legions

being unprepared, but was quickly silenced. The humiliation was made worse

when the balor informed her of the marilith general under his command who

happened to be her rival and nemesis. Baltoi agreed to the "request" of the

balor and gave a quick once-over of her tactic to destroy the compound.

Baltoi had decided upon a course of action that would eventually lead to

her doom, she switched the attack from the pit fiend's lair to the

specialized training area; however, she purposely neglected to inform anyone.

Hours after the balor had imposed his will, Baltoi used her well of many

worlds to go to the nine hells herself. Near the pit fiend's lair, Baltoi

subdued an erinyes and gave her strict orders of what to inform her master.

At the training ground, she captured a red abishai and informed him of her

moves.

The next day, Baltoi opened the well of many worlds to the chasm leading

towards the specialized training grounds. When a small army of lemures, led

by a red abishai, appeared opposite the tanar'ri and her accompanying, the

balor launched his vanguard into a full assault. Blinded by his warmonger

status and his bloodlust, the balor didn't realize this shouldn't be

happening. Atop the chasm various baatezu came into view, among them, the

pit fiend commanding the training area and the pit fiend whose compound was

Baltoi's original target. The only other tanar'ri who realized how

hopelessly outnumbered they were was Baltoi's nemesis marilith. Baltoi could

only laugh and told her nemesis that "this is what happens to those who

displease the great Baltoi." The two mariliths fought bitterly, but Baltoi
proved to be the greater combatant.

At the end of the struggle, the balor's body was unceremoniously dumped

on the dead marilith. Baltoi looked up to see an unscathed pit fiend. There

will be a brief conversation between the two where it is spoken about the

deal Baltoi made/offered to the pit fiends' armies. Baltoi will have been

allowed to escape, but one of the pit fiends will have foreshadowed her doom

by saying, amongst other things,

"Know this, beast, no one who betrays their own race lives a worthy

existence. I will take delight knowing that you will engineer your own doom."

With that Baltoi will have returned to the Abyss, covered in blood. She

was soon met by a guardian tanar'ri who demanded to know what happened with

his favorite balor's victory.

Baltoi was shocked by these worse turn of events. She will have

attempted to cover up her betrayal with lies, but the fury of the guardian

over the loss will do Baltoi no good and this is where she gets stripped of

her powers and banished by the guardian into a cave with no exits. Though

she had never been there before, Baltoi knew she was in the domain of dread.

She had heard rumors that there was no escape, but she didn't figure it was

because of being sealed into solid rock.

The story will mention about the group of miners who discovered Baltoi

and the wizardess who cast the wish spell placing her into slumber. Baltoi's

consciousness will pick up during the fight mentioned in "Adam's Wrath" and

describe parts of that that to which Baltoi would be privy. Her story will

assume that one hero died, Adam was "killed" (his body destroyed) and the

rest of the "heroes" escaped. From then until the adventure begins, Baltoi

will be in and out of sleep.
