In English, adjectives have two main functions: modifying a noun (e.g. “a happy man”), or acting as a predicate afier a “be” verb (e.g. “He's happ: in Korean, adjectives only keep their basic form when used as a “1% Y48}c}.) . When an adjective is used to modify the following word, the form of the adjective changes to match that In both cases, the adjective retains the same basic form. Adjectives also conjugate in Korean! Adjectives in Korean are much more like verbs than English ones are. First, they end with -Ct, just as verbs do. Second, they serve as a predicate without "be verbs,” just as verbs do. Third, they also conjugate. The part which precedes -Ct is called the stem. The stem is constant in its shape, and various syllables can be attached to it to indicate different meanings, tenses and levels of formality. These attachments are called endings. “Conjugation” basically refers to the way adjectives—and verbs, of course —are formed using these different endings. 2. Regular Adjectives and Irregular Adjectives Most adjectives follow a regular conjugation pattern. However, there are a number of exceptions or irregular adjectives which follow other distinct patterns. Even among the regular adjectives, there is one special type you have to pay attention to. = adjectives. These are adjectives whose stem ends with a @, for example, SCH(sweet), ZCH(long), and 2c} (distant). They follow the basic conjugational rules, but they are sometimes different from other regular adjectives. 3. Conjugation Patterns of Regular Adjectives #1. AS+ending The endings -C}, -il, -74L}, -A] Zt, -7], -A|, Et, and -2- can be attached to the stem of all adjectives (regardless of whether they are = adjectives or not). e.g. (-Ct) }+C}—MIC}(to be cheap) A+C+- 2Ch(to be black) G1+C}—QIC}(to be distant) (-a2) MH} —M}i1(to be cheap and) 2+ 2-H D(to be black and) ‘B+ D—Bi1(00 be distant and) ‘XVi BRO BSA S00 HBA #2, ()AS+ending 2ASe+-ending The endings -l|? can also be attached to the stems of adjectives. But here, it's important to note that the stem of 2 adjectives loses the final 2. e.g, (-L1?) DAHL ?—ML|?(cheap?) B+] ?- BL 7(black?) QA+ -L27—OfL|?(distant?) #3, DASv+endingt »AS=+endingt 2ASc+ending2(-2-) The adjective conjugation for the endings -21/-2 4 and -a/-& basically depends on whether the stem of the adjective ends with a vowel or a consonant. If the stem of the adjective ends with a consonant, you should add -°- in front of the endings for the convenience of pronunciation. Also note that again, 2 adjectives are the exception. They don't need an extra -2- and they don't lose their final =. e.g. (-P/-2 1) DUH EA} PA(iF it's cheap) QY+A—B Alif it's distant) @Y+2+A— YO If it's black) (-5/-8) Da (being cheap) @QY+e—A (being distant) @a+2Q+a—YSlbeing black) #4. ()ASv+ending1 2ASa+ending1 BASc+ending2(-2-/-L-/-A-) Type #4 is similar to type #3 in some ways. The adjective conjugation for Guide to Conjugation Vii the endings of Type #4 also differs according to whether the final sound in the stem if a vowel or a consonant. If the stem of the adjective ends i with a consonant, you should add -2 ion. And just to make things extra complex, in this case @ adjectives do lose their final = in the stem. The endings -e4L{CH/-GL{Ch, -sL{7}2/-BL1 M2, -L/-2, and -2/-B belong to type #4 2.9. When these adjectives meet with the endings -_/-&, the 2 changes into =. Thatis, WE, WWE, HWE, BME, AWE, SURE, setet = are correct, and YE, WYS, NYS, AS, ABMS, SHAS, Ya GE are incorrect, #5. These types of endings are basically classified according to whether the final vowel in the stem of the adjective is } /4. or not. Here it does not matter whether the stem ends with a consonant or not. If the vowel in the stem of the adjective is a |} /., the stem combine with ending -Ot. and in other cases, -0{. M}+0}2 becomes M2, not MOF2, and %S}+012 becomes 2842, not 25+0{2 (actually Sst 01 is also correct, but ignore that right now). This is because of vowel contraction.
