Reactors Do Not Explode. A Brief
History of the Chornobyl Disaster
by Kateryna Mikhalitsyna, Stanislav Dvornytskyi
Illuustrated and design by Seri/graph studio
Historical period: Soviet Union, Chornobyl disaster, 1986
Psychological topics: responsibility and the price of human life; “the right to know”;
heroics; totalitarian regimes; ecology.

Chornobyl as a city, as a nuclear power plant, as an Exclusion Zone, as a tragedy

and as a symbol. This book appeared to explain the catastrophe to people born after it.
For “Chornobyl” to be not just a word by which Ukraine is recognized, but a conscious
historical experience. It is shown here in several dimensions: technical, emotional,
natural, political. The creators of the book were able to find the exact language — both
verbal and visual, which was able to tell without escalating and with simple, but at
the same time not devoid of emotion words about a large-scale tragedy.

The publication has already received several prestigious awards — it won Best Book
Design Award from the Book Arsenal in the category “Children’s Book” (design
of the studio Seri/graph) and Best Book Award 2020 from BookForum
in the category “Literature for teenagers and young adults”.

Flowers near the Fourth
by Kateryna Mikhalitsyna
Illustrated by Kateryna Borysiuk
Historical period: Chornobyl: April-May 1986, USSR, till present days
Psychological topics: connection to the ancestors; leaving home; surviving loss,

What does a great-grandmother long for, looking out of the window of a high-rise
building? Somewhere in blooming Polissia, her house was abandoned forever.
The catastrophe took away not only the house, but also the life of a loved one — as
well as many other lives. What’s left? Herbs that smell like home, memories and great-
granddaughter drawings. The girl paints as giftedly as her compatriot in the Chornobyl
zone, a representative of naive painting Maria Pryimachenko, whose pictures Picasso
admired back in the day. The artist, unlike the heroine’s grandmother, remained in an
abandoned village near the reactor for the rest of her life.

Ukrainian city Zhovkva after the First World War. Her father, a former soldier of the
Ukrainian Galician Army, has a post-traumatic disorder. Mom cares about everyone
