WHO WE ARE
Portal Publishing and Education creates books on history and culture while paying special
attention to a unifying narrative, different values, and psychological aspects. We discuss global
things through local, local through global, focus on the context and interrelationships. The
history of Ukraine is part of world history, but at the same time, the history of Ukraine contains
within itself the history of the world.
The publication has already received several prestigious awards — it won Best Book
Design Award from the Book Arsenal in the category “Children’s Book” (design
of the studio Seri/graph) and Best Book Award 2020 from BookForum
in the category “Literature for teenagers and young adults”.

The author offers to move away from identity issues and instead take a look at
the values of the Ukrainian society, the ones that can both help and impede the
modernization of the Ukrainian nation and of Ukraine, as well as to transition from
the historical trajectory of “backwardness” to that of “sustainable development”.

Western Ukraine, World War II. The cozy life of a Jewish family in the multicultural
Zbarazh is shattered when Hitler’s troops come to the city. Having survived the
hopelessness of the ghetto and the loss of loved ones, the little heroine finds help.
One of many of such similar and such personal stories. It is a book about darkness, fear,
sorrow — and about hope and a new life that eventually wins. Based on documentary
materials.
What does a great-grandmother long for, looking out of the window of a high-rise
building? Somewhere in blooming Polissia, her house was abandoned forever.
The catastrophe took away not only the house, but also the life of a loved one — as
well as many other lives. What’s left? Herbs that smell like home, memories and great-
granddaughter drawings. The girl paints as giftedly as her compatriot in the Chornobyl
zone, a representative of naive painting Maria Pryimachenko, whose pictures Picasso
admired back in the day. The artist, unlike the heroine’s grandmother, remained in an
abandoned village near the reactor for the rest of her life.
The touchy, moving and multifaceted book touches on several important and at the
same time difficult topics — forced emigration, defeat in the liberation war, post-
traumatic disorder, family relations and how a child experiences troubles in a family.
Sofiika is getting used to a new life in America, where her family migrated from the
Ukrainian city Zhovkva after the First World War. Her father, a former soldier of the
Ukrainian Galician Army, has a post-traumatic disorder. Mom cares about everyone
and radiates optimism with all her might, although sometimes she wants to give up.
And also - Sofiika learns an amazing story about how bizarrely the fates of people
from different countries that belonged to the same empire are intertwined. A little bit
sad, but light and life-affirming story about historical continuity, inner resource and
overcoming trauma.
Home, family, blooming pomegranates, children’s mischief. One day all of this is swept
away by the World War II. And the next day, after so many losses, it turns out that
being a Crimean Tatar is a sentence. Hasty deportation, weeks in the freight trains,
heavier losses yet, unfriendly new settlements, hard work. Memories of the lost
Crimea. How can one find meaning, strength to live and faith in people?

Childhood in the late Soviet Union was not what it is now. The realia are not entirely
clear to modern adolescents: waiting for nuclear war, propaganda, shortages, awkward
household items. The main characters — a teenager Matvii and his father Petro — go to
Lviv to visit grandmother. There are still heaps of Soviet things in her ceiling cabinet,
and things are good at telling stories. The book gives a reason to talk about feelings of
nostalgia and values.
At the end of the 19th century, Baron Falz-Fein founded the Askania-Nova Nature
Reserve in southern Ukraine. Soon came the turbulent times: changes in government,
appearance of militant gangs in the steppes and uncertainty. It was then that the girl
Stefa went to Askania with her father, a biologist — and found herself in a whirlpool
of events. This book is about exciting adventures that occur amidst the unique flora
and fauna and against a complex historical background. But first of all - about getting
closer to nature, getting to know yourself and your family and how a devoted
friendship is born from rejection.
Being a teenager is not easy. And being teenagers in a town on the front-line of
Ukrainian East in 2014 is very, very difficult, but also interesting! There are new
challenges that are added to the eternal ones concerning friendship and love, jealousy
and inner fears, self-expression and school problems. Like accepting an internally
displaced classmate, learning first aid, waiting out shelling in the basement, seeing
death, saving lives. Defending your history and your values.

Four princesses
By Oleksandra Orlova
Illustrated by Anna Surgan
Historical period: Kyivan Rus: 11th centuries
Psychological topics: knowing thyself; forming one’s identity;
values and worldview; mercy
We know that the daughters of Yaroslav the Wise all married the European kings.
And who were they themselves? The author imagined how the childhood of Kyiv
princesses could pass. Clever, derisive, playful girls — and at the same time, future
rulers who learn princely virtues and honor books.
We see Lesya Ukrainka’s name every day on monuments and street names, on
banknotes and in school classrooms. But how did Lesya herself see the world every
day? As a living person, and not someone from an official portrait. What did she love,
what did she laugh at and felt sad about, what did she write about in letters to the
relatives, who was she friends with? Funny nicknames for siblings, homeschooling,
stylish outfits, reluctance to perform in public and long journeys — probably everyone
will find something in common with Lesya, who called herself boule vagabonde —
a “traveling ball”.

a huge humanity and long historical transformations — and to understand
exactly how we came to the current point of development.

Two boys look at the crescent in the sky: Orkhan sees in it a Muslim symbol, and
young Petrus — a Cossack chaika (boat). The events date back to the time when there
were constant clashes between the Christian and Muslim worlds on the Kinburn
Foreland near the Black Sea. Everyone has their own truth and their own path to
freedom, so this story teaches mercy and acceptance, because the path of revenge and
violence gives birth only to offence and distrust to the world.

People have traveled since old times, in particular from the territories of present-day
Ukraine to distant lands. Only in ancient times it was much longer and riskier than now.
How and why were great distances covered in different historical periods? Together
with the hero of the book, readers will travel by land, water, sky — and sometimes,
learn a lot of interesting facts. For example, how to tow a heavy boat overland, why
they gilded the horns of oxen and why there was a mandatory rule of ancient travelers
“never travel alone”. And also, the book will help parents and children prepare for
family travels.
