Female hostels’ occupants

of the University of

have bemoaned the poor
state of their environments

the living premises. The article 'the' should be removed and 'bemoaned' is a high sounding word

This comes few weeks after a viral video clip surfaced online showing the deplorable condition
of Nkrumah Hall, one of the institution’s hostel blocks. This shows uncertainty

Speaking to journalists recently, the students lamented that despite the fee they pay to the
university administration for sanitation, they are still exposed to health hazards as a result of the
increasing population of mosquitoes and rodents which are caused by the untidy environments of
their hostels. Who are the journalists ?

Udoka Okekwe, an occupant of Eyo Itah hostel, described the hostel premises as unhealthy and
unsafe for occupants, noting that she has seen different kinds of rats and heard stories of snakes
being seen around the apartment units. Grammatical error and spelling the correct thing should
be "she has seen different kinds of rat and heard stories ......

"The back of our hostel is inaccessible because of the grasses," she said, adding that some
students are allergic to the grasses. It should be some students are allergic to grasses not 'the'
grasses , this is because it seems like there is a specific grass being talked about.
Okekwe continued; "it is in this school that I started seeing different colours of rats. We have
heard of snake incidents and I don't want anything to bite me. Wrong punctuation and
unnecessary repetition of details. There should be a coma not colon.

"The grasses at the back of the hostel, the dirt and stagnant water outside and all this stuff that
are not supposed to be around the hostel are what breed the mosquitoes." Incorrect expression it
should be "The grasses at the back of hotels and stagnant water are not supposed to be there
because they breed mosquitoes"

She, however, called on institution’s authorities to quickly address the situation by carrying out
environmental cleaning, which the students pay for. "paid for" and "she however , not she,
however,

Similarly, an occupant of the Bello hostel, Chantel Ugwu said that due to the bad state of the
window nets, rodents easily go in and out of the rooms and sometimes stay in the rooms. Article
"the" should be removed.

I'm her words: "Most of the nets have openings so, snakes or rats usually come in and go out
anytime they like. In her words not I'm her words

"When they do not to go out and attack you instead, you will not even know how to escape
because it might be when you are sleeping or when you are" she added. When they don't go out
and attack you instead. When you are what ?

She also called on the University authorities to look into the issue and tackle it.

Another occupant who pleaded anonymity, urged the university administration to develop
alternative measures in handling such cases because cleaners may not bring a lasting solution to
the issue which has lingered for a while.

Efforts to speak with the hostel management regarding the issue proved abortive.
