What is genomics and how would you relate it to the concepts and principles that you have applied in
the game?
Genomics is an area within medical science that examines the genome, the complete set of genetic
information you have which determines how your body functions and what it looks like. In order to understand
genomics, it is important to know what genes are and what they do. Each genome contains all of the
information needed to build that organism and allow it to grow and develop. As an example, the human
genome is made up of 22 autosomes and a pair of sex chromosomes. A genome sequence is establishing the
order of DNA nucleotides or bases (A, C, G, and T) that make up an organism's DNA. This information is
invaluable to understanding development. In relation to the game, just like genomics, PHYLO puzzle follow a
set of genetic information. PHYLO is actually a framework for harnessing the computing power of mankind to
solve the Multiple Sequence Alignment problem.

How can genomic research help scientists understand the mechanisms of inheritance?
They can study these preserved genes and compare the genomes of different species to uncover
similarities and differences that improve their understanding of how human genes function and are controlled.
This knowledge helps researchers develop new strategies to treat and prevent human disease.

What types of sustainability challenges have scientists researched using genomics and the Human
Genome Project?
Using genomics knowledge of soil microbial communities to predict the response of key biogeochemical
processes such as carbon stabilization, denitrification and nitrous oxide fluxes, methane oxidation, and
leaching losses to episodic environmental events such as freeze-thaw cycles, prolonged drought, and rainfall.
