APGAR SCORE

An apgar score is taken on every newborn at 1minute and 5 minutes after

birth. It permits a rapid assessment of the need for resuscitation and is based
on five signs: The heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, reflex
irritability and color.

Scores of 0-3 indicate severe distress, scores of 4-6 indicate moderate

difficulty, and a score of 7-10 indicates that the infant will not have
difficulty adjusting to extrauterine life.

The apgar scores do not predict future neurologic outcome, but the 5 minute

m
er as
score does correlate with the degree of risk for neonatal morbidity and

co
mortality.
