INFANT CARE
Apgar Scoring was develop by DR.
Virginia Apgar
 A method of assessing the newborn’s
status adjustment to extra uterine life.
 It is taken at one minute and 5 minutes
ater birth
 The one minute score indicates
necessity for RESUCITATION
 The 5 minutes score is more reliable in
predicting mortality and neurologic
disorder

 HEART RATE-indicates distress
 RESPIRATORY RATE-indicates
asphyxia

You’re collecting 1 min APGAR score on male
newborn. You note HR-142bpm. The baby’s cry is
strong and regular& body is pink with slightly blue
hands. There some flexion of arms and legs. While
assessing the newborn moves and cries. What is
your patient score?
Appearance- body is pink with slightly blue hands=1
Pulse- HR-142bpm=2
Grimace- moves and cries=2
Activity- some flexion of arms and legs =1
Respiration- cry is strong and regular=2
APGAR SCORE IS 8/10
CASE 2
Your assessing the five minute APGAR assessment,
you note of the ffg. HR-97, no response to
stimulation, flaccid, absent respiratory, cyanotic
throughout. What is your pt. APGAR and
INTERVENTION?
A- cyanotic throughout=0
P- HR-97=1
G- no response to stimulation=0
A- flaccid=0
R- absent respiratory=0
APGAR-1/10( NEED full resuscitation and re assess
after 5 minutes
