1. Create a Drug Study on Gastrointestinal Drugs that are commonly used in clinical settings.
Utilize the drug study template.
2. Briefly organize and bring together main ideas. Explain in your own words. (50 – 150 words
for each question)
a. A neighbor, Mr. Alexander Tofer, is coming to get advice on antacids. He claims he's been
taking Maalox "for years" for indigestion, but it doesn't help anymore. He asks the nurse,
"Can you prescribe another antacid or one of the pricey, fancy pills that the pharmacy sells? Or
should I just take some baking soda? "How is the nurse going to respond?
The nurse should respond to the client and explain that nurses are not the one held
accountable to prescribe medications. In fact, it is not included in the scope of nursing
practice. The nurse should advice the patient to consult to his physician about his complaint
of the decreased efficacy of his specific antacid (Maalox). Laboratory tests are also needed
and may be helpful for the physician to find appropriate antacid or dose for hi indigestion.
•Right time: as
instructed by
the physician
•Right dose: as
ordered by the
physician.
3. Case Study:
Amanda, 56 years of age, has been self-treated with heartburn antacids for 6 months. GERD has
been diagnosed following an endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Decisions were taken to
start treatment with cimetidine (Tagamet. Amanda was generally healthy except for a history of
asthma. She says she doesn't smoke, but she enjoys going to a bingo session every Saturday for a
couple of hours where she's smoking, beer and pizza.
The root of GERD development is the weakness of the lower esophageal sphincter which
allows stomach contents to rise towards the esophagus. This can be caused by overeating,
smoking, pregnancy, consumption of fatty and acidic foods and beverages.
b. When Amanda sees the cimetidine medication, she questions, "Why do I need a prescription?
I can buy it from the counter! "What are you going to say in reply?
I will narrate to the patient that a prescription is needed because the drug in the
prescription is specifically tailored for her condition. This means that it is prescribed
according to her level of condition. Dispensing medications of certain condition without
prescription may cause serious health risks and problems
People’s body and structure differ from one another. This is why if a drug
prescription is needed, this means that it is important to have a physician prescribe to observe
safety and to enhance the efficacy of the drug appropriate for Amanda’s condition.
d. Develop a nursing care plan (minimum 1 NCP) for Amanda. You may use NANDA Book as
your reference.
