A. Task 1: Comprehension question
1. What is the main problem faced by the parents?
Answer: The main problem faced by the parents is the dissatisfaction of online
school registration system.

2. Why did the parents feel disappointed with the online system?
Answer: The online school registration system was disorganized and made it difficult
for the parents to register their children for enrollment in public schools.

3. Who was rejected from school due to his/her height?


Answer: Riki Setyanto's daughter was rejected when he registered his daughter to
SMKN 47 Jakarta. She rejected due to her height doesn't match with the minimum
height policy and technical issues.

4. What happened to Nuraisyah Paransa's son?


Answer: Nuraisyah Paransa was unable to register her son at any high school due to
technical problems. Her son was initially accepted through public admission phase.
But, he didn't re-register with that school because he wanted to shoot for a better
school through the local admission phase. And now he isn't registered anywhere

5. Mention some technical problems in registering using the online system.


Answer: The first technical problem in the registration that used online system is a
student got rejected in the first school because of a certain policy, but when she tried
to register at a different school she also got rejected because her name still listed in
the first school. The second problem is that a student was accepted at a shcool
trhough public admission phase, but he didn’t re-register for that. Because of that, he
could’t register at any school.

6. What made the online system problematic this year?


Answer: technical issues from the online system made it problematic this year.
7. Why do people prefer public schools to private schools?
Answer: According to one of the parents, Rida Afrida, many people prefer public
schools to private schools for financial reasons.

8. If you were one of the parents, what would you do to deal with the problems in the
online system?
Answer: If I were of the parent, I would make a complain as well to be sure nobody
is getting disadvantage from this problem.

9. What do you think about the acting governor’s response to the parents’ protests?
Answer: In my opinion, the response given by the acting governor was not quick
enough to respond to the protests of the parents. The government always waits for
negative impacts, and only finds a solution at the last time.
10. If you were the acting governor, how would you respond to the parents’ concerns?
Answer: I would tell the head of the Jakarta Education Agency that the system
should be repaired immediately. For the parents, i would suggest that they shouldn’t
be panic because there was no problem last year and they need to reschedule the
follow up for admission to public school.

Statement from the The head of the Jakarta Education Agency said that anyone
head of the Jakarta who did not re-register in the public admission phase and

admission, could register their children at private schools.
He also said that parent can transfer their children to a
public school on the second semester.
Statement of one of Riki Setyanto, one of the parents, said that he had registered
the parents his daughter for enrollment at state vocational high school
SMKN 47 Jakarta, but she then got rejected due to the
minimum height policy applied by the state-run school.
Statement from the Acting Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama said that
governor the parents should be patient and not panic.
"We had no problems last year. The process might be a little
complicated, but there's no reason to panic" the acting
governor told reporters at City Hall
