How to make an immediate impact on your audience

Presentation is a way to tell information from the speaker to the audience. When you be the speaker, of
course you want the audience to understand what you say and leave the presentation with a mark.
Sometime it is hard to engage audience, making the presentation boring and not that interesting. But
there are ways to avoid such presentation, and here is “How to make an immediate impact on your
audience”.

> How to begin is depends on how formal the situation is. but most audiences prefer a relatively
informal approach.

There are a lot of ways to begin a presentation, formal way, informal way, or combination of both.
Usually people like using the combination of both, because it’s still formal yet feel more comfortable
cause not to awkward.

Formal way like : “Perhaps we should begin, Good morning, ladies and gentleman. my name is …, For
those who don’t know me, I’m responsible for …, This morning I’d like to (discuss)(report)(present) ….,
“If you have any question you’d like to ask, I’ll be happy to answer them” or “Perhaps we can leave any
question you may have until the end of the presentation”.

Informal way : Ok, lets get started, Morning everyone, thanks for coming. I’m …., as you know I’m in
charge of ….. . what i want to do this morning is (talk to you about ..)(tell you about …)(show you about
…). “Feel free to ask any question you like as we go along” or “Don’t worry there’ll be plenty of time left
for question at the end.” .

> Dont waste a lot of time in introducing

Just introduce yourself, your division/company, the subject of presentation in a simple way. Don’t do a
presentation to take advantage for yourself, but do a presentation to give too, to give information, data,
tips, ideas to the audience. The goal is that the audience have a knowledge, have a same thought, catch
the idea of what you presented.

Example : My name is …., I’m from …. Division in ….. company.

not like : My name is …., I’m from … division in … company, I have a lot of achivement I got in ….. , my
education degre is ……, and I’m currently doing ……
> state the purpose of presentation

Stating why you do the presentation, for what you do the presentation, give an overview of the subject.
This can help the audience to know what is your presentation about, at least they have a rough idea
about what will you deliver to them.

Example : This morning I’m going to …. , so I’ll begin by …., and then I’ll go on to ….

> Opening is important to hook audience attention.

In opening the audience will get the first impression to the speaker, and it is one of the most important
thing in presentation. First impression can be one of decision making factor for audience to decide
whether they think its interesting or bored. You have to engage the audience with first impression, you
have to make them feel that “this is something interesting I should listen this”.

there is a way suggested by the expert to engage audience :

1. Give audiences a problem to think

Not a problem “a problem”, it’s just like giving the audience some image about what problem
that want to be discuss, so the audience can think about it and know that it is something that
interesting. You can use other methods like asking a provokating question so you can know what the
audience think about the subject of presentation.

2. Give audiences some amazing fact that related.

Giving fact is like giving your idea an additional power, it’s help the audience to think that it is
relevant cause there is a real example of the idea. It will give more image to the audience about what
will the speaker give in the presentation.

3. Give them a story or anecdote that related.

Give them a story is one of the best way to engage the audience to your presentation. A lot of
public speaker use this method to stir the audience (e.g many top speaker in TED Talk). Story has a
capacity to paint a picture in human mind. With this, the audience can get what the speaker want to tell
them about. But remember, never tell a story without making a point, never make a point without a
story.

You can use single one or combination of these three. These three things can also be used in the middle
of your presentation, example when you get to the next topic, it is to involve your audience in your
presentation.

> Involve the audience.

Don’t just do a simple “one-way presentation”, communicate with the audience, involve them in
your presentation. Ask them some question or refer your presentation to the audience experience.
Make it like a conversation. This thing will help you to make the audience still in track with you and can
help the audience to stay focus on what you presented.
> smooth signposting (transition to get to next topic) is important

So the audiences can follow you through presentation. Signposting is critical, it will help the
speaker guide the audience through presentation. It must be clear, simple, and can connect each topic
in the right order of your presentation. It helps the audience to know when you move to next topic and
what topic you are going. Signposts help the reader understand the connections between the points you
make, and how they contribute to the overarching aim of the assignment.

Example : To move on …., to turn to …., go back to ….., we expand on …., to conclude ….., to recap ….

> Design an effective conclusion for closing.

Summarize and refocus. Recap the main points or arguments you’ve covered. Reiterate your
purpose, thesis, or research question. Reinforce what’s important for the audience to take away from
your presentation.

When you want to close your presentation, create closure, a sense of finality. Here you can use
many of the same kinds of devices suggested for openings. You can even return to exactly the same
anecdote, quotation, or remark you used at the beginning—and give it a twist. Other approaches are to
lay down a challenge, look to the future, or simply to firmly restate your basic conclusion or
recommendation. Avoid introducing new evidence or opening a new line of argument.

> Survival Tactics

when you think you are going out of line in presentation, there is a way that you can do a
recovery move. If you think that you are out of line of your presentation, you should do a recovery
move, because if you don’t do that there is a possibility that it will ruin your presentation.

Example : You think you saying something wrong, you can say “Sorry, what I mean is ….”

You think what you are saying is too complicated, you can say “So, basically what I meant is ….”

You think your talking sounds wrong, you can say “sorry, let me rephrase that”

You think you’re running out of time, you can say “So, just to give you, the main points here ….”

You thing you’re talking nonsense, you can say “Sorry, perhaps I diddn’t make that quite clear, so the
thing(s) …..”

Etc.

> Clarity is Important

Clarity is important so the audience can understand anything that you stated. It actually hard
especially for non native speaker, but it is one of the important thing. Use a clear language that is clear
to hear, avoid vague pronoun references.

It is also in visual, if you use a pictures or slides. Use a simple yet clear picture that deacribe
what is the idea of the topic, use a font type and size that is clearly visible and avoid Using spreadsheet-
like slide in presentations.
