THE CASE:

Mary is a college student who is taking a degree in Hospitality Management. For the
upcoming summer, she is scheduled to start her internship as a server in a hotel for three (3)
months. Expecting to be an event planner in the future, Mary has a strong feeling that what she
will be doing on her internship seems to be irrelevant to her career objective. She dislikes being a
server because of the long working hours, low pay, and heavy physical workloads involved in
the position.

Questions:

a. Based on your dining experiences in restaurants or hotels, do you think the workload of
being a server is heavy? How much do you expect a full-time server should earn
monthly? For how many hours should a server work per day?
b. Given your answers in question a, would you still pursue a career in the hospitality
industry/ Why?
c. If you were Mary’s internship supervisor, how would you convince and encourage her to
treasure her internship opportunity in this case?
A restaurant or hotel server takes orders, answers questions about the menu and food,
sells the restaurant’s foods and drinks, takes payment, communicate orders with the kitchen staff,
seats customers, and helps with customer service and cleaning. As we all known, server is also
called a waitress or waiter. When Mary start an internship, she dislikes what internship will she
take we should accept it at first even it is not our career in the future. It is better to start or
possess in a low position before it goes on the career that what we want to achieve in the future
because having an experience is important even we do not like it or we cannot do it as long as we
have a heart to make it and as long as we are happy doing it. Taking a course of Hospitality
Management, hospitality needs to have a characteristic of having a willingness in a work,
positive attitude, ability to work under pressure, respectful, treat them equal and providing what
they need is what needs to be done in order to be successful in this career.

I have not yet experienced being a server in a restaurants and hotels because I have not
done any on-the-job training yet, but when I look at them, being a server is hard. There is no job
that is easy but as long as we love what we are doing it makes an easy for us to do it. Therefore,
if Mary thinks that her internship is irrelevant to her why she would not try to make it and not
make an advancement thinking that she could not make it. Because at the start of the job, it is
really hard, but when the time passes by, we also get used to it. Everything is difficult at first but
we need to get used to it and do our job very well even we did not like the job like Mary but
acceptance is important and just make it fun. As my estimated amount, a full-time server should
earn 550 pesos a day which should also be a manila rate of salary. We need to earn an equal
amount of salary in every country because it is all the same. For the hours of a server should
work per day is 8 hours and 12 hours for overtime.

I will still pursue a career in the hospitality industry. As long as I am enjoying in this
career why not I will pursue it. And as long as I love what I am doing I still pursue it even it is
hard I will going to continue what I have started because time is too short for it to be wasted.
Therefore, we should always be productive on what career we will going to pursue and what we
will going to pursue more for further future. But there is nothing more difficult when you really
want the job and you have the heart to pursue and make our dreams become a reality one. In
addition, as long as I am responsible and the ability to do the job, I will always pursue a career in
this industry and I will make myself more inspired and motivated. However, the happiness in this
career will not be faded on my face and it is the one thing that I will practice even if the work is
very tiring.

If I am a Mary’s internship supervisor, I will convince and encourage her with a no


pressure at work but just did her best on doing a job. Do not hesitate me to ask for a concern
because I am here to help what is her concern about and I will be specific to give her a task for
her to accomplish it well. In addition, I will convince and encourage her that her internship in
this career that all employees in this hotel has the intention in smiling even if they are tired and
have a communication to each other that would be more memorable to her. I will make her mind
be more challenging on what good things will happen when she did a good job like giving her a
benefit that she can apply for her life. I should always tell to her that she should maintain a
positive attitude so that the mind of other that was looking for her is like a professional that
anyone cannot have. However, I encourage and convince her that just prove what she is for her
better improvement of opportunity of employment.

In conclusion, do not fear to take the challenges even if it is not your career in the future.
But start with a small position until we reach our future career. Because it is important that we
have an experience at first before we achieve our goal to be a professional one or like Mary that
has a future of being an event planner. It is not bad to start an internship even when you see it
hard but when you start doing it you do not have to worry about but just enjoy and make it an
inspiration to achieve a one’s goal.
