CLEANING EQUIPMENTS

Manual Cleaning Equipments:

Manual cleaning equipments can include all types of equipments that

clean or aid in the cleaning process by directly using the maneuver, operation
and energies of the employee.

 Brushes - These may be designed to remove dry or wet or ingrained

dust and dirt from the hard or soft surfaces.

Different Types of Brushes:

 Hard Brush - Hard brushes have bristles that are fairly stiff and well spread out cleaning
equipments. They are most suitable for the removal of heavy soil and litters from the
carpets and for cleaning of rough surface.
 Soft brush - Soft brushes may have bristles that are fairly flexible and set close together.
These are used for removal of loose soil and litter on hard smooth surfaces.
 Scrubbing brushes - Scrubbing brushes have short, coarse bristle designed for use on
surface that have become stained and heavily ingrained with dirt. These brushes should
only be used to remove stubborn heavy soiling small areas that are difficult for
scrubbing machines to access Cleaning equipments like Brushes are also classified on
the basis of their functions.
 Toilet brush – Used for cleaning of W.C.
 Bottle brush – These are used for overflow vents in wash basin and tubs.
 Flue Brush – These are used for cleaning chimney.
 Feather brushes – These are used for light dusting.
 Care and cleaning of brushes - Brushes should be generally tapped on the hard surface
to loosen the dirt and debris after the cleaning process. Frequent washing with water is
avoidable. Brushes should be washed in warm and soapy water.
How to Use Brushes: Brushes should be generally tapped on the hard
surface to loosen the dirt and debris after the cleaning process. Frequent
washing with water is avoidable. Brushes should be washed in warm and
soapy water.

 Brooms - Sweeping brooms consist of long bristles gathered together into handles. The
bristles of the brooms are made of grass, corn or coconut fiber. Depending on the type
brooms are used for removal of dirt and dust in the large areas. It can be used to clean
hard surfaces for a quick dust up of dirt or hairs.

How to Use Brooms: Avoid getting your broom wet. It damages the broom and shortens its
lifespan. When washing a broom, make sure that it dries thoroughly upside down, to prevent
bristles from being bent or damaged. Sweep as needed on a daily basis. There is no set
schedule for sweeping.

Different Types of Brooms:

 Soft bristled brooms - These types of brooms are made of corn fiber or grass. This is used
for smooth floor.
 Hard / Coarse- bristled brooms - These types of brooms are used for hard
surface especially outdoor rough areas.
 Wall broom - These are also called ceiling brooms. They have a soft head
or long handle made up of canes. These brooms are used for removal of
cob webs.

 Wet /damp mop - These mops are used in conjunction with buckets for the removal of
dirt adhering to a surface. The mop heads can be made of cotton, sponge or any other
fiber capable of absorbing moisture well.
 Mop Wringer trolley − A mop bucket cart (or mop trolley) is a wheeled bucket that
allows its user to wring out a wet mop without getting the hands dirty. The mops are
squeezed between two surfaces to remove dirty water from it.
How to Use Mops:
 Prepping the Mopping Area - Set up the necessary wet floor/caution signs to alert other
individuals that the immediate area may be slippery, and they should avoid this region
or proceed with caution. Move all obstacles including tables and furniture into a safe
area where they will not get wet and can be moved easily back into place. Remove all
sticky substances and larger debris from the surface to be mopped.
 Dust Mopping the Area - Follow the dust mopping procedure to remove all debris, dirt,
and large objects (i.e. pallet chips, dust bunnies, dropped food items, etc.), from the
mopping area.
 Wet Mopping the Area - Dunk your mop into the solution in the bucket, then wring the
mop out until it is just damp. The #1 problem that occurs while mopping is over-wetting
of a surface. Using a damp mop will allow the dirt to cling to the mop as you go instead
of being spread around by the water on the floor. Start in the corner farthest away from
the door. Mop in a figure 8 pattern to utilize your mop most effectively. As you mop,
move towards the entrance of the room so you are always standing on a dry piece of
floor. This will help to avoid streaking and tracking of your solution to other parts of the
facility. Change the solution often to ensure the water you're using to clean is not overly
saturated with dirt. Dirty solution will only move dirt from one area to another, it will
not remove it from the floor. Always check your chemicals for proper dilution ratios.
Running an air mover will speed up your dry time which is especially important in areas
that are in use while you are cleaning.
 Clean Up - Dump mop bucket out and rinse repeatedly until mop bucket is completely
clean. You do not want any solution or residue left over to contaminate your water the
next time you use the bucket. Rinse out mops thoroughly and hang up to dry above a
slop sink or floor drain. Remove all wet floor/caution signs originally put in place. Return
any moved objects to their original places.

Different Types of Mop:

 Do-all mops - These mops consist of stand of twisted cotton, fixed to a circular metal
plate., which is in turn is fixed to a stock.
 Kentucky mops - These mops consist of cotton stand fixed to a length of cotton fabric,
which is in turn instead into flat metal stock. They are available in weights ranging from
330 g to 670 g.
 Sponge mop - These consits of cellulose sponge fixed to a replaceable lever-controlled
head, hinged for wringing out and attached to long handle. Using sponge mop is one of
the easiest ways to wash hard floor.
 Squeegee – A squeegee consist of long metallic handle and a
wooden or rubber blade to remove excess water from the
surface being cleaned. It is effective when followed by damp
mop.

 Scarifying machine − It is used for keeping gardens, golf courts, and lawn in the hotel
premises. It cuts through the turf, and removes moss and dead grass. It helps grow
spongy lawn. Scarifiers have fixed knife blades attached to the rotary cylinder. They cut
through the grass by which the offshoots are separated into lots of individual plants.
This helps to thicken up the turf and improve its health.

How to Use Scarifying Machine:

 Remove any debris from the lawn and apply a moss killer, rake out the dead moss in
advance of scarifying.
 Mow the lawn on a low setting.
 Scarify the lawn on a high setting.
 Apply top soil and grass seed to finish.

Mechanical Cleaning Equipments:

 Vacuum cleaners – it removes debris, soil or water from the

surface by suction. All vacuum cleaner works on the same
operating principle. In all types a motor drives an impeller which sucks in air through an
inlet creating a difference in pressure, between the air and outside the machine. Air
drawn in front the inlet passes through and out of the machine. The dust is collected
into the container provided which may be enclosed within the body of machine. or
outside in a form of bag.

How to Use Vacuum Cleaners:

 Examine the area of the vacuum where it deposits dirt. In older vacuums, this is a bag. In
new ones it is often a removable and reusable canister. If the bag is full, you need to
change it; if it is a reusable container it should be emptied as often as possible. If the
deposit area is full the vacuum won't be able to pick up dirt effectively.
 Check the vacuum's height. Most vacuums have an adjustable indicator for carpets of
various lengths. If your vacuum has one, make sure it is set to the appropriate length for
your carpet. If it is set too high it won't have enough suction and if it is set to low it
won't have enough airflow.
 Move all of the smaller items out of the vacuum's way. Even if you don't plan to move
the furniture when you vacuum, such as ottomans and coffee tables, you can remove
the smaller items easily.
 Turn the vacuum on and push the vacuum forward and backwards over your carpet, in
slow, even strokes. If you move the vacuum too quickly it won't pick up
dirt as well.
 Use the vacuum's attachments such as the simple hose with exchangeable
ends, to clean corners and under the edges of furniture. Most vacuums
have a series of attachments for these sorts of jobs. It is a good idea to do
this extra bit of cleaning so the normal airflow of your room doesn't push
unwanted dirt into your newly cleaned areas.

 Scrubbing Machine - It is a floor care accessory that comes with handheld electrically
operated scrubber. It is used where only mopping doesn’t suffice. It can scrub stubborn
and sticky stains on the floors of cafeterias, restaurants, lobbies, and fitness areas where
people can take food and beverages.
How to Use Scrubbing Machine:

 When preparing the work area, remove any furniture or other obstructions that can get
in the way. Don’t forget to post warning signs to make sure that employees and
customers are aware of the maintenance work going on. Dusting the area can help as
well. This will remove anything that may damage your machine, such as trash collecting
beneath the squeegee.
 Before using the machine, you should also connect all the hoses and make sure that
there are no leaks or damages. Using a faulty scrubber can ruin the flooring. The pad or
brush you use should also match the type of flooring to avoid any damage or grout lines.
 When starting the actual task of cleaning your floors, start close to the wall and make a
sweeping turn with every pass to pull up all of the solution deposit. You may also want
to divide the room in half to save time. For inaccessible spots, use a mop and a bucket,
since the machine may not be able to clean those areas.
