LO 3. Clean toilet and bathroom TLE_HECGCL9- 12-IIIg-j-19

What I Need to Do

In this activity, you will be able to:

o Identify cleaning equipment/supplies and materials.
o Discuss the procedure in cleaning toilet and bathroom.
o Demonstrate proper procedure in cleaning toilet and bathroom.

Gearing Up

Read and carefully understand the information Sheet below.

Information Sheet 1.3

Cleaning the toilet may be one of the least appealing jobs around the
home, but one thing is for sure: keep putting it off and what is an easy task will only
become harder.
We have come armed with everything you need to know on how to clean a

1
toilet and get that porcelain seriously clean and sparkling.
Before we go through how to clean a dirty toilet and make it sparkle instead,
first make sure you know what you need to get the job done:
It is best to use a brush with plastic bristles for toilet cleaning – wire brushes.
can damage the enamel surface of your toilet.
• Always start with a clean toilet brush and toilet brush holder.
• We recommend keeping a pair of rubber gloves solely for toilet cleaning use,
to avoid any cross-contamination.
• Make sure you keep one dry cloth available!
• Rim block isn't essential, but it will help with omitting some odors and
stains.
• Remember – it’s important to keep your brush and sponges clean as well so
you’re not spreading more bacteria.

Cleaning Equipment/ Supplies and Materials Needed

Squeegee- to remove excess moisture from the walls and door of the shower or tub
after every time use.
- It drastically cuts down on moisture,
mildew, and soap scum, which can
be difficult to remove later. Use a
squeegee with a glass cleaner to
make cleaning mirrors and windows
a snap and clean look.
Even when you use a squeegee regularly, soap scum happens. To scrub
it off in seconds, use a more scrub.

Scrub Brush- is certainly the most versatile tool for cleaning a bathroom and is the
best for removing soap scum and tough
spots. For truly deep cleaning the tub and
shower, there is no substitute for a scrub
brush.
- You will need it to give the
bathtub a good cleaning and
unless you rinse your sink
every time after brushing

2
your teeth, you will probably need it to get the dried toothpaste and soap
scum out of your sink, too.
- Scrub brushes are also effective for getting to floor areas that the mop
cannot reach, like behind the toilet, and sink and between vanities.
Brushes with synthetic bristles last longer. On the other hand, natural
bristles are less likely to scratch surfaces.
- Read the care instructions for the tub or shower before scrubbing it.
Some of their surfaces can easily scratch and should not be cleaned with
abrasive cleaners or brushes.

Toilet Brush- a brush with a long handle that is used to clean the inside of a toilet.
- For quick and easy toilet cleaning
purpose, keep a toilet brush in a
decorative holder next to each of the
toilet bowl. Use a cleaner bottle with
an angled neck, and then clean the
bowl.
- Rim with the brush and wipe all
surfaces with a paper towel. Fill the
toilet bowl brush holder with bleach
and cleaning agent to disinfect it
between cleanings.

Grout Brush- A grout brush is designed to get

in the small areas between the tiles without
scratching the surface of the tiles. You can
think of a toothbrush for this task. But a
toothbrush will not do what a grout brush can.

3
Disinfectant Cleaner- a chemical agent that is used especially on hard surfaces and
in water (such as drinking water or
wastewater) to destroy, inactivate, or
significantly reduce the concentration of
pathogens (such as bacteria, viruses, and
fungi)
NOTE: Common chemical disinfectants
include chlorine, calcium and sodium
hypochlorite, iodophor, phenol, ethanol,
and quaternary ammonium compounds. - -
Disinfectants are often distinguished from sterilant by having reduced effectiveness
against dormant bacterial endospores.

Sponge- is a tool or cleaning aid made of soft,

porous material. Typically used
for cleaning impervious surfaces, sponges are
especially good at absorbing water and water-
based solutions. Originally made from natural
sea sponges, they are most made from
synthetic materials today.

MOP-
- Some bathrooms are small enough to clean the floor in a few swipes
with sponge and brush. But if you have
a larger bathroom and want to save
your back, a mop is a great use to you.
- Twist mops with replaceable heads are
your best bet because they allow you
to control the water on the head while
mopping and can throw the head away
when it is clearly seen its last swipe.
- A dry mop can be used to get cobwebs out of remote corners of the
ceiling. There are some electric floor cleaners that function like a mop
but with a little less effort on body parts.

4
Rubber Gloves
- Between germs, grime, and cleaners, keeping the bathroom clean can do
a number on both the hands.
Protect your hands with a
quality pair of rubber gloves.
- Rinse them well after each
use and hang to dry before
storing.
- Sanitize the gloves every few
weeks by running them
through the dishwasher or by
adding them to a load of rags when you do laundry. Let them dry in the
air, and they will be as good as new.
Plunger
- Plungers symbolizes bathroom cleaning tools.
There is not a clog you cannot get by with a
plunger. You will have to set up the rubber
end to the drain or the toilet hole, and then all
you will have to do is pull and push to unclog
the drain. Everything will start to flow like the
river after that.

Glass Cleaner
- No one will be happy after seeing an unclear glass in the bathroom, they
are one of the most important parts from every
aspect. To keep them always clean, you must
have a glass cleaner. This chemical formula can
remove all hard dirt to make them look clean, as
well as make the glass shinier and more beautiful.
Even they make it germ free to keep everything
hygiene.

HOW TO CLEAN TOILET BOWLS

If you want to know how to clean a toilet, it is best to start with cleaning the
toilet bowl. For this, you will need to clean as much surface area as possible, so start
by draining as much water from the bowl as you can. You can do this by siphoning
with a plunger, or by turning the water valve off and flushing your toilet.

1. Gloves on! Apply bleach.

- Put your gloves on and apply your
chosen bleach or cleaning liquid around
the rim, letting it run down the sides.

2. Scrub with the toilet brush.

- Using the toilet brush, start scrubbing under the rim to remove any
surface stains and spread the cleaner around.

3. Be thorough!
- Continue using the brush to scrub down and around the toilet bowl.
4. Be thorough!
- Continue using the brush to scrub down and around the toilet bowl.

How to clean a toilet seat

- Your toilet seat can harbor harmful bacteria, so it is important to give it
a regular and thorough clean.
1. Spray the cleaner.
Spray some bathroom cleaner around the seat and lid, especially
concentrating on any bolts and screws and at the back near the pipe or cistern.
2. Use a toothbrush.

- Use an old toothbrush to scrub those

hard-to-reach areas like the hinges and
loosen any dirt.

6
3. Wipe.
- Wipe away any grime with a paper towel and dry off the cleaning
solution.
- To quickly clean your toilet seat, it is useful to have antibacterial
flushable wipes handy.

How to clean a toilet exterior

Keeping the outside of your toilet clean is just as important as cleaning your
toilet bowl, as it can get just as dirty.

1. Spray cleaner on the tank.

Spray your bathroom cleaner over the

tank, lid, base, sides, and handle. For ease,
you can also use flushable antibacterial
wipes.
2. Start from the top.
Starting from the top, wipe down the entire
area with some kitchen roll or a cloth,
removing all the cleaning solution.
3. Always use a clean and dry cloth.
If the cloth gets saturated halfway through, use a clean, dry one to continue.

How to clean the base of the toilet

Stains and bacteria can accumulate at the base of the toilet where it meets the
floor, as well as behind it, causing bad odors
to linger.

1. Spray the base.

Spray all around the base of the toilet
with the bathroom cleaner.
2. Use an old toothbrush.
Using an old toothbrush, scrub the
area thoroughly to remove any dirt or
odors.

7
3. Wipe.
Using paper towels or a cloth, wipe away any grime and dry off thoroughly.
4. The final touch.
This step isn’t essential, but we think it’s definitely a plus to have a pleasingly
fragrant toilet at the end; hook
your chosen rim block over the
rim of your toilet to prevent dirt
and limescale build-up and keep
odors at bay from your toilet
bowl.

How to Clean Bathroom

No one likes cleaning the bathroom, but by keeping up with it, the job
becomes much less painful. Read on for some tips in efficiency in keeping your
surfaces, walls, floor, shower, and toilet sparkling clean.

Part I. Preparing to Clean

1. Remove all the items that do not belong in your bathroom.

- Take out everything that does not belong, such as clothes, cups, and
trash. Also, move out any little side tables or movable storage cabinets
so that you can clean under them.
2. Pour some bleach or another disinfectant into the toilet bowl.
- Put the toilet brush inside the bowl, helping to sanitize the brush for
cleaning. Let the cleaner sit for 10 to 15 minutes so that it can work.
- Make sure the door is open and the fan is on to ensure proper
ventilation.

8
3. Dust from the top down.
- Clean cobwebs in the corners of the bathroom, and brush other dust and
dirt directly onto the floor to sweep up later. A duster works great for
this, but you can also use the broom.

- If you have got delicate wallpaper, place a soft, clean, dry rag over the
bristles.
4. Apply any scrub powder to especially dirty areas.
- If you have got lime and build-up in the tub, sink, or around faucets,
damp those areas slightly and sprinkle with scrubbing powder like
Comet. Letting it sit for 10-15 minutes while you do other things will
help to work loose the dirty patches and make your scrubbing go much
more smoothly.
- Be sure to read the label and ensure that you are using an appropriate
product and will not damage your surfaces. Test it out on a non-visible
spot before you use it.
- For a greener option, sprinkle surfaces with baking soda and then spray
them with vinegar. Let the mixture sit for 10 to 15 minutes and then
wipe the vinegar and baking soda away with a damp cloth.

Part II. Cleaning Surfaces.

1. Wipe the walls, windows and/or ceiling.

- If you have mold on the ceiling start with spraying a water
bleach/disinfectant solution on it and let it rest for a couple of minutes,
do the same with the walls (if they are tiles) or use another cleaning
product. With a sponge or a clean rag, scrub the tile surfaces you have
sprayed. Rinse it carefully to avoid any stripes and dry it with a clean
rag.
- A 50:50 vinegar and water solution is also a great option for cleaning
walls and other surfaces. Just make sure that you do not mix vinegar
with bleach since this can create a toxic gas.
- It is a good idea to wear rubber gloves while you are scrubbing, to keep
your hands from drying out if you are using harsh products.
2. Clean the shower.
- Spray cleaning product on the shower walls, and the shower head and
let it rest for a couple of minutes. Spray cleansers made especially for
9
getting rid of soap scum work very well on tubs that have not been
cleaned in a while.
- For hard water areas that are prone to green and rust-colored stains, a
cleanser made for eliminating calcium, lime and rust is probably what
you need. Never use abrasive cleaners or green abrasive scrub pads or
steel wool on porcelain fixtures, as they will quickly dull the finish.
- Soak the showerhead. If the showerhead is clogged with hard water
buildup or soap scum, remove it, and soak it in vinegar overnight or fill
a sandwich bag with vinegar and secure it around the showerhead with a
rubber band. Then, scrub the water holes with an old toothbrush the next
day to get any remaining buildup.
- Go back over the shower and scrub the walls, faucet and shower head
with a soft sponge, rinse well with the hottest water and dry with a
towel. You can shine the faucet with a dry towel.
- Do not forget the shower curtain; it is also prone to mildew. A solution
of about 2/3 water, 1/3 bleach in a spray bottle can be handy for getting
rid of mildew spots. Or you can take it down and wash it in hot water
with a small amount of soap and bleach.

3. Scrub the sink and counter area.

- Scrub all the soap scum and toothpaste off with a small amount of
cleaner, rinsing your sponge thoroughly as you go along. Do not forget
to clean your trashcan, toilet paper holder, tissue holder, toothbrush
holder, doors, and other items in your bathroom. An old toothbrush or
cotton swabs can be handy for getting the junk out from between the tap
and handles.
- Be sure never to clean the sink and counter area with the same rag or
paper towel you used to clean the toilet. This can spread leftover
disease-causing germs to your sink and counter area. To prevent this,
you can use a specific rag which you use to clean only the toilet.
- Wipe off the fronts and tops of cabinets and drawers. You will probably
want to use hot, soapy water for this purpose. If you are worried about
germs on these surfaces, add a bit of bleach to your soapy water.
- Wash your toothbrush holder like you would wash a cup or bowl. Add a
squirt of dish soap to the inside of it, then fill it with warm water and
scrub the inside with a bottle brush or sponge. Rinse it out well to
remove the soap.
10
4. Spray glass cleaner or water on the mirror and wipe it.
- Use glass cleaner or water and wipe the excess water off with a towel or
squeegee. Wipe the mirror dry with a towel after spraying it with glass
cleaner or water.
- A 50:50 mixture of vinegar and water also works well to clean glass and
other surfaces.
5. Clean the outside of the toilet.
- Wipe all around the outside of the toilet, starting with the flush handle
so as not to re-contaminate it. Use a cloth soaked in a disinfectant
cleaner. Thoroughly wash and rinse all exterior surfaces of the toilet
bowl, including the underside and flared base, the top and underside of
the seat and lid, and the hinges and their mounting area with a cloth and
detergent or similar cleaner.
- Do not forget to use a cloth specially for cleaning the toilet, or a paper
towel. If you use a paper towel, throw it away. Do not flush it.
6. Scrub the bowl with a toilet brush and flush.
- Coat the inside of the bowl with a viscous acidic cleaner generally sold
in an angle-necked bottle. Take special care to cover the entire inside
edge of the rim; it will run down toward other areas.
- Allow the cleaner to soak for half an hour or more before scrubbing the
entire bowl including under the rim with a toilet bowl brush, let it soak a
little longer after it has been well-distributed though thinned by the
initial scrubbing, then scrub some more and flush it away.
- If you have hard water stains in the toilet bowl, use a pumice stone to
remove them. Dip the pumice stone in water and scrub the stains gently.
Look for a pumice stone in the cleaning section of your grocery store.
7. Sweep and mop the floor.
- Start with the farthest point from the door. Sweep up all the dust and
debris you have cleaned so far and let fall on the floor, then mop using
hot soapy bleach water. Remember to rinse the floor with clean water to
remove slippery soap residue. Be sure to get along the sides of your
toilet bowl where it is anchored to the floor. This area is notoriously
dirty. Do not forget to clean the base boards or base molds these places
usually accumulate a lot of dust.
8. Use an old toothbrush to scrub small spaces.
- Find an unwanted old toothbrush and wash it thoroughly. Get rid of all
excess toothpaste gunk that may be on it. Apply a small amount of
11
bleach or other counter-safe cleaning product to the toothbrush. Scrub
away! The toothbrush helps to get in areas that are narrow or need very
detailed scrubbing.

Part III. Keeping the Bathroom Clean

1. Run the fan.

- Keeping your bathroom ventilated will discourage the growth of
mildew, keeping your big cleaning sessions few and far between.
Always run the fan after you get out of the shower, to dry out the
bathroom and keep the moisture from clinging.
- You may also want to take apart the fan occasionally, vacuum out the
inside of it, soak the blade in a 50:50 mixture of vinegar and water, and
then wipe down the blade and cover. This will help to ensure that the
fan is working at full capacity.
2. Wipe down the shower after you use it.
- To make sure mold and mildew does not build up in the shower in
between big cleaning sessions, take time to wipe it down every time you
take a shower. Combined with running the fan, this should keep your
bathroom mildew free.
3. Keep it tidy.
- Much of what we call "mess" is just clutter. If clothes accumulate in
your bathroom, put a hamper, or even a cardboard box in the bathroom
to collect dirty clothes. Use a toothbrush holder or a cup to keep your
toothbrushes in order. Keep other supplies in an old shoebox under the
sink to keep the surface tidy.
4. Use the toilet brush.
- Even if it does not look dirty, minerals in the water can stain the bowl,
so it is a good idea to brush the toilet down with a sturdy toilet brush
regularly. If you do this even just once a week, your bigger cleanings
will be much easier and infrequent.

5. Wash toothpaste down.

- Toothpaste stains and build up in the sink and even on the mirror can
make a bathroom look dirtier than it needs to be. Make sure you clean
up after your toothpaste, washing it down and rinsing the sink out, then
drying the bowl of the sink when you are finished.
12
- To consolidate tasks, do this while your mouthwash for an added dental
benefit.
