AROUND THE WORLD

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Korean pop or in short K-POP is a music originated in South Korea and was
introduced to the music world later in the 1990's starting with a boy-band called Seo Taiji
and Boys. It has different genres and styles such as hip hop, R&B, folk, country and
classical on top of its traditional Korean music roots. Them experimenting and trying new
genres helped reshape and modernize South Korea’s contemporary music scene.

First generation artists such as H.O.T, modernized the culture of being a korean
“idol” that made enormous fandoms of teenagers and young adults. While Seo Taiji sold
1M copies through his album “Seo Taiji” then earned the title “first million seller kpop
artist” and opened the era of artists selling million copies of their albums.

Artists such as BoA, TVXQ, Super Junior and BIGBANG started the second
generation targeting chinese and japanese market with their jp-chn versions of their
songs. BoA and TVXQ in Japan made records by beating legendary japanese boy group
B’z to have 1.2 million people to hear their concerts. BoA became the youngest artist to
achieve a “daesang” or a grand award in the industry.

Third generation started, in 2012 a legendary boy group EXO was introduced by
one of the big three companies, SME. EXO became the “first million seller” with their
very first full-length album after 12 years of drought. EXO opened the era, paving the
way for other groups to also earn million seller titles, reviving the physical sales industry.
EXO received a lot of love and attention worldwide making them endorsers and
ambassadors of different brands in Korea. EXO earned a lot of “first artist to” titles,
proving that they are the Kings of K-POP.

K-POP has been a lot of help especially to teenagers and young adults, as they
find k-pop music healing and motivational. K-POP artists such as EXO, TWICE and
BLACKPINK have also set examples as good influencers by their actions and motives.
