What is basic knot tying?

Basic knot tying is a fastening made by tying or looping together lengths of material, such as rope, in a
prescribed way. It is often tied or folded upon itself. Basic knot tying is an essential life skill and there
are different kinds of knots that are useful for different purposes. Basic knot tying can be used in
camping, scouting, climbing, first aid, etc. Learning the basic knots is not only cool and interesting but
could also save your own or someone’s life.

8 basic knots:
1. Clove hitch - considered to be one of the most essential knot. It is usually used as a temporary knot.
It is also used in securing lines running along a series of posts, belaying, starting lashings, and weak
binding.
2. Two half hitches - it is a general-purpose hitch. It is used to fasten a rope temporarily to a post,
hook, or ring. It is very useful in securing a rope to a pole and is perfect when camping for tents and
clotheslines.
3. Bowline - The Bowline is an essential knot – easy to tie and untie – it is used to make a fixed loop at
the end of a rope. The Bowline is a common rescue knot used when securing and lifting people or
equipment.
4. Figure 8 knot - The Figure-Eight Knot is an important stopper knot. It is used mostly in sailing and
rock climbing so you don’t lose your rope.
5. Sheet bend - it is widely used by sailors for tying their ships. it is the most secure and works well on
uniting both the same size and different sized ropes.
6. Square knot - is probably the best known and most widely used knot. It is used as a binding knot for
such things as clamping a pad on a wound, tying a gathering rope on the male end of an extension
cord, or as a shoestring knot.
7. Timber hitch - The timber hitch is a knot used to attach a single length of rope to a cylindrical
object. It is often used by lumbermen and arborists for attaching ropes to tree trunks and logs.
8. Taut-line hitch - it is a useful, adjustable, and trustworthy knot. It is often used to adjust guy lines to
the tent-poles, setting up hammocks, and securing loads on vehicles.
