Alarm
INTRODUCTION
The V.A.S. (Vehicle Alarm System) offers volumetric and perimetric protection. It monitors the state of
the doors and the presence of a moving object in the interior compartment.
In particular, it can:
- adapt its operation to current laws in the various markets governing the use of alarm systems;
- distinguish errors or intermittent and permanent faults;
- memorize the number of activations and the number of alarms effected;
- detect and memorize specific faults of the control unit;
- detect faults or anomalies on the connecting cables of the system disablement key switch.
The alarm system basically consist of: a receiver located in the courtesy light, transmitter (remote con-
trol), hyperfrequency sensor for volumetric control, door/bonnet/boot switches and an electronic con-
trol unit located in the engine compartment opposite the battery cage, which incorporates a self-sup-
plied siren and the key-controlled emergency ON-OFF switch for disabling the system.
OPERATION
Switching on - off
The alarm is switched ON by pressing the button of the transmitter (remote control). The range of action
is about 5 m.
It is switched OFF by pressing the remote control button again.
The alarm cannot be switched on when the ignition is on, only when the ignition key is at the
STOP or PARK position.
The transmitter is an infrared device with continuous transmission of the code for as long as the key is
pressed, with a maximum duration of 5 seconds. To obtain maximum efficacy of the command to switch
on the alarm, it is advisable to direct the remote control towards the courtesy light and keep the transmit-
ter button pressed until the alarm is switched on or off, indicated by the dissuasion LEDand, in countries
whose legislation so permits, by a visual and acoustic signal.
Exclusion of the system
If the transmitter batteries are discharged or the alarm system fails, the siren can be disabled by means of
the emergency key located on the control unit (OFF position).
When the car is delivered, check that the emergency key on the control unit is at the ON position.
Turn the key to the OFF position if the vehicle is not used for long periods (over 1 month).
When the key is switched to the ON position again, if the battery is insufficiently charged or if the con-
trol unit has been disconnected, the alarm emits an intermittent acoustic signal of 10 beeps (except for
the system programmed for Germany).
Surveillance
Alarm state
The
tects system enters situation.
an irregular into alarm when one of the sensors assigned to surveillance (see preceding list)
' de-
The alarm state is indicated by the siren sounding for about 28 seconds and the direction indicators
flashing for a maximum of three 4.5 minute cycles (only in countries where the legislation so permits).
PROGRAMMING
The alarm system originally fitted requires programming as:
when it comes out of the factory, the receiver contains a "UNIVERSAL" code which, controlled by a
"UNIVERSAL" transmitter, allows the car to be tested and moved around in the factory.
Before delivery, it is therefore necessary to programme the receiver with the code of the transmitter sup-
plied with the car.
The methodsof indicating the alarm may vary depending on the laws in force in the country of registra-
tion; it may therefore be necessary to programme the system by entering the country code.
The system"recognizes"the codesof the remotecontrols with no limit asto quantity, but only the last 4
remainstored in memory (when the 5th remote control is entered, the first is deleted from memory).
There are 2 programmingmodes:
- before entering the password:SIMPLIFIED PROGRAMMING
- after entering the password: PROTECTEDPROGRAMMING.
In view of the importanceof carrying out the programmingprocedurein rapid and precisese-
quence,it is advisableat least at first to carry out the operationswith two people: one to read
the instructionsin sequenceand the other to carrythem out strictly. All the programmingoper-
ations must be carried out with the doors shut.
Eachtransmitterhasa platewith two codes;the first 4-digit code and the Password for protecting
against unauthorizedprogramming(protected programming);the second is the transmittercode com-
prising six setsof numbers. The plate must be removedby the Customerat the time of purchaseand put
in a safeplace;in addition, the transmittercodes must also be markedon the back of the Code Card (re-
fer to the Fiat CODEsub-section).
Simplified programming
The memorization of a transmitter
must always be carried out with:
- alarm switched off with the remote
control (dissuasion LED off)
- ignition off

Country code programming
After simplified programming, within 3 seconds of the release of the button on the courtesy light receiv-
er, a time window remains open in the system so that the anti-theft system can recognize the code of the
country where it has to operate.
This takes place by pressing in rapid succession the receiver button (see table 1 below).
If the button is not pressed, the EEC operating mode will be recognized automatically if this operation is
being carried out for the first time. If instead this operation has already been carried out, the system pre-
pares itself to function in accordance with the mode already memorized.
N.B. To programme the country code, it is preferable to use the procedure with the FlAT/LAN CIA
Tester - module M29-A or use the procedure described below.
m If the procedure has been carried out ~orrectly, t~e LED on the r~ceiver wI" flash ~ times, indi-
~ cating that the code has been memorized both In the courtesy light receiver and In the V.A.S.
control unit. If not, the LED will flash 18 timesand it will then be necessaryto repeatall the op-
erationsstarting from point 1 of simplified programming.
It will also be possible for the country operating modes to be recognized in accordance with this proce-
dure:
N.B. To enter a subsequentremote control, repeatthe operations from point 1 of the simplified pro-
gramming procedure.

The regulations governing the on/off indications and the installation constraints for the alarm systems in
the various markets are listed in Table 2 below.
PROTECTED PROGRAMMING
To prevent strangers entering their code, the memory has to be protected (closed); this operation takes
place automatically after the alarm system has been switched on/off 256 times, or by an intentional ac-
tion on the part of the user by entering the password (manual closure of the memory).
7. while the LED flashes, press and hold down the button (5) on the courtesy light; the adjacent LED
( 4) conti n ues to flash;
8. with remote control at a distance of at least 20 cm from the courtesy light, briefly press the button
(3) so that its LED (1) flashes. Then release the button (3);
9. check that the LED (4) on the courtesy light comes on permanently;
10. then release the button (5) on the courtesy light at the end of the programming cycle.
...
The alarm system can indicate to the user any faults present in the system by the dissuasion LED coming
on permanently or flashing:
A. When switching on:
- LED comes on permanently to indicate faults in the volumetric sensor circuits
- LED comes on, flashing slowly, to indicate faults in the door, bonnet and boot buttons.
B. When switching off:
- pulse cycles (numbers of pulses from 1 to 10) to indicate the cause of intervention of the alarm (see
decoding on Table 4 below).
If the dissuasion LED indicates faults, the User must contact the Fiat Service Network.
Remember that during service interventions on the car or if there are faults such as to activate the siren,
the latter may be excluded by turning the key switch on the control unit from the ON position to the OFF
position.
At the end of the intervention, always return the key to the ON position and always reclose the pro-
tective cover on the control unit.
It should be borne in mind that each component of the anti-theft deviceinstalled in the car be-
comesan integralpart of the device,so it should not be fitted to or testedon other cars, evenif of
the samemodel.

Manual diagnosis
A MANUAL DIAGNOSIS can also be carriedout by opening the bonnet and switching the ignition from
on to off; the bonnet protection button should then be pressed 7 times in rapid suGcession in less than
10 s; 5 beeps will indicate the start of the manual diagnosis procedure. After 10 s the direction indicators
will flash once.
When this mode is entered,a self-test is automaticallyactivatedon the hyperfrequencysensorconnect-
ed to the control unit. If the test is OK,the direction indicatorswill flash 3 times and at the sametime the
siren will beep 3 times.
After this first stage, whenever the status of the switches changes, the direction indicators will flash
briefly and there will be a beep, accompaniedby a flash of the LED on the central console.
If the ignition is switched off, the siren will sound briefly (500 msec.) and the direction indicators will
flash (2.5 sec.).
This final operation will lead to exiting from the manual diagnosis procedure. You can also exit from
MANUAL DIAGNOSIS by not executing any actions for at least 30 s; the exit from the procedure will be
indicated by the direction indicators coming on for about 2.5 s and by a beep.

Electronic control unit (1) or (4) is supplied with 12V when the ignition is turned to MAR, and is also
able to keep working for about 150 msec after the power is cut off.
This is possible due to the presence of a buffer condenser inside the electronic unit. This accumulates
electrical energy to allow the electronic control unit to work normally and to generate the ignition signal
required to set off the pyrotechnic charge.
Air-bag operation is therefore ensured even if impact causes system power to be cut off (e.g. damaged
or broken battery, broken su pply leads etc.).
The control unit must be positionedwith ARROW (3) facing in the vehicle'sdirection of motion.
This position must be STRICTLY OBSERVED, because it determines the direction in which the deceler-
ation signal is received in order to assess impact status and thus cause the air bag to operate.
The control unit contains an accelerometricsensor. This producesa signal which is processedby a mi-
croprocessorto revealthe severityof impact. The microprocessorthen determineswhether to set off the
gretensionersand air bags.
A second safety sensorsends a signal to enable air bag activation.
Two different activation thresholdsarepresent:a higher thresholdfor the air bags (both driver's
air bag and passenger'sair bag are set off at the sametime) and a lower threshold for right and
left seat pretensioners.
Fault memory
Throughout the period the vehicle is in motion, the electron control unit continually
monitors the system
to check the continuity of circuits and components.
Detected faults are stored and an "air bag failure" warning light comes on on the instrument panel.
The FAULT MEMORY may be consulted during Service by connecting a FIAT/LANCIA-TESTER to the
tester point (see details below)
Crash memory
As mentioned previously, the complex microprocessorand control unit software monitors the signal
from the accelerometricsensorand identifies impact severity level. If the impact is sufficiently severe,
and the safety sensorsendsan enablementsignal, an activation signal is sent to the pretensionersor air
bags.activation order is stored in a special crash memorythat contains information on occasionswhen
This
the intervention threshold is exceededand safety sensorenablementsignals.

CLOCK SPRING
The CLOCK SPRING (9), detail B on the previous page is fitted to the stalk unit. It allows the connec-
tion leads of the air bag module connection leads of the air bag module on the AI R BAG installed on the
steering wheel to follow steering wheel rotation without the risk of breakage. The device consists of two
plates. The lower plate is fastened to the stalk unit by means of screws (8). The top plate is fastened to
the steering wheel by means of a flange on the upper part.
Inside the two plates, the module and horn button connection leads are wound up into a coil so that
they can follow tsteering wheel movements.
The clock spring is fitted with a device which automatically prevents it from turning when the steering
wheel is removed. This action prevents the upper plate, now no longer secured to the steering wheel, from
turning freely to wind up or unwind the leads and lead to the possibility of breakage.
When the steering wheel is fitted, the device is automatically released.
WHEN REMOVING-REFITTING THE CLOCK SPRING, ENSURE THAT THE SPRING IS REFITTED IN ITS
ORIGINAL POSITION.

55.
If the upperplate of the clock spring turns in relation to the lower plate so that the position up-
on removal can no longer be determined,it is absolutely necessaryto REPLACETHECLOCK
SPRING.
If replacement is required, the clock spring is supplied together with the stalk unit. TH E UNIT MUST BE
INSTALLED WITH THE WHEELS ALIGNED WITH THE VEHICLE'S LONGITUDINAL AXIS
(STRAIGHT AHEAD), because this is the corresponding position of a new part. A new device is fitted
with an safety key which keeps it locked. This key must be removed when the steering wheel is installed
to allow the system to turn correctly.
PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG MODULE
P3WO85LO2
The passenger side air bag is also enclosed in a container fastened to a metal frame. The components
and principle of operation are the same as for the driver's side module, but the size is different.
P3WO86l01
Operation
Once impact has taken place, the control unit
commands the ignition circuit to supply the gas
"'"'
generator (1) in the same way as occurs for the
air bag module. The gas pressure developed is
applied to the surface of piston (2), and gener-
ates a force which pushes the piston into cylin-
der (3). The end of a steel cable (4) attached to
piston (2) is connected to the belt attachment.
Movement of piston (2) therefore shortens the
belt by a few centimetres (about 7-8 cm) and
therefore takes up the extra length. ~.
P3WO87LO1
AUTOMATIC DIAGNOSIS
While the vehicle is in motion, the electronic control unit automatically monitors the air bag system and
storesany faults. When a fault is detected, the unit stores it and turns on the air bag warning light bulb.
The warning light comes on for about 4 seconds (initial test stage) upon start ~p and then goes off.
If the warning light does NOT come on or does NOT go off after 4 seconds, the air bag system must be
fa u Ity .
System activations following crashes of particular severity are also stored in the control unit.
Faults stored in the control unit can be analysed using a FIAT/LANCIA TESTER or other diagnostic tool.
Anomalies stored in the control unit may be deleted once the fault has been repaired using a
FIAT/LANCIA TESTER or another diagnostic tool.
NOTE If a crash causes the full system to be activated (air bags and pretensioners), the control unit
memory cannot be deleted and the unit must be replaced in all cases. The control panel warning
light also stays on permanently.
The memory may be deleted twice if the pretensioners alone are activated.
The control unit only needs to be replaced if the pretensioners are activated a third time.
If module lines need to be tested for breaks during fault diagnosis, the modules must be
disconnected from the wiring and replaced with appropriate simulation resistances.
FAULT DIAGNOSIS
Testing system by means of blink codes (only for BECKER control unit if FIAT/LANCIA
TESTER is not available).
In the case of electronic control unit figure A on page 79, the system can be tested by reading the num-
ber of blinks produced by the air bag warning light on the control panel if a FIAT/LANCIA TESTER is
not available.
In order to activate the test, insert the ignition key and connect terminal no3 of the electronic control unit
to earth for a time between 1 and 5 seconds (air bag system fault warning light is connected to control
unit terminal 3)
The table below shows possible faults and remedies to be adopted according to the number of blinks
produced by the warning light.
Once the fault has been repaired, repeat the test to ensure no further faults are present. Note that the con-
trol unit communicates one fault at a time, until the system is fully repaired. Once the repairs have been
carried out, clear the FAULT-MEMORY by connecting terminal no3 of the control unit for a time between
5 and 10 seconds. All stored errors must be deleted one by one. The procedure must be repeated until the
fault memory is fully cleared.
