The traffic during rush hour is now getting more complicated especially in

capital city or other city with dense population like Surabaya, Gresik, and Sidoarjo.
The traffic can last from approximately thirty minutes to several hours in certain
hours like school hours, office hours, and in certain hours in weekend. It is
important to understand the cause of the problems so that it can help us reduce
the traffic congestion or at least avoid the traffic jam.

Traffic among the entrance to capital city, like in Surabaya, is happened

very often because many vehicles enter the city in the same time. It occurs mostly
at Monday and Friday, at six to nine o’clock in the morning and at five to six o’clock
in the evening. Lots of people accessing this entrance are mostly from other city
who work or study in Surabaya. According to the Head of Department of
Transportation, only one percent of Surabaya residents utilize this road to go out
or enter the city after working every day. There are more than seven thousand
vehicle per hour come to Surabaya from A. Yani Street only. Unsurprisingly, the
volume is raising significant in certain hours. This road are dominated by
motorcycle or private car which contains few people in it. The more numbers of
people enter the city the more vehicle contribute to this traffic. In addition, there
only few alternative road which can used, but it is way so longer and narrower that
not many people are willing to use this road.

Public transportations has not been accommodated the people yet. The
government actually has provide some public transportation as approaches to
reduce traffic in Surabaya. However, not many people utilize them because of some
reasons. For example the economic bus Surabaya-Sidoarjo city with very cheap
ticket, but without any conditioner is not the first choice for most people as the
weather in Surabaya is hot and dry. The other public transportation which has
been booming in few past years before is commuter train. Although it has quite
affordable ticket and relatively comfortable, the schedule can’t fit for some
employees and some train stations do not located in office area. Thus, it takes
more times to reach their working places.

It is quite sad that there are still plenty of people who do not obey the
traffic regulations. Overtaking and speeding can do harm not only to their own self
but also other riders. Simple thing like using helmets properly, not overweighing
the motorcycle or fill their vehicle as the passenger capacity will absolutely assist
the policemen who have already overwhelmed by the traffic. It is still very common
in dense city to see pick up car carrying items like fruits or vegetables with some
people sitting down in the tub. To be caught in heavy traffic jam is extremely
stressful and might provoke emotion. It worsens their condition while driving,
which have been exhausted from working all day long. At the end, unless they pull
aside to take a rest, they will drive recklessly. Those irresponsible habits are
potentially leading to accident that inhibits the traffic itself. The accident in rush
hours in primary arterial road is able to bring about lining up dozens of cars for
hours.
