WIRELINE LOGGING
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.2 It is important for the rig Foreman to give ample advanced notice to the
Service Companies when requesting logging services. Ten to twelve-hour
notice is not uncommon since the tools have to be inspected and functionally
tested prior to usage. For specialty tools and services, notification should be
made weeks or even months in advance to insure availability when needed.
1.3 This chapter has been prepared to familiarize Drilling and Workover
engineers, as well as Rig Foremen, with wireline logging tools capabilities
and operational requirements. This chapter is designed to be used as a quick
reference for well logging and drilling operation optimization. For more in-
depth information regarding how logging tools work, refer the RDD Manual:

Note: *Weatherford has the capability to provide open hole and cased hole logs. Their
Compact Suite, has the ability to acquire standard, wireline-equivalent type or
quad combo logs in wireline and drillpipe conveyed, offering ranges from 2¾” to
12½” hole sizes. Their services includes Resistivity, Porosity/lithology, Formation
Testing, Acoustics, Imaging and Nuclear magnetic resonance. The Weatherford
conveyance systems include Wireline (open hole/through pipe), Coiled tubing,
thru-bit logging, Slickline, Wireline drop-off, Well tractor, pipe conveyed logs.

services, Cement Bond Logs) and Open hole logs (Resistivity, Density, Porosity
and Gamma Ray logging for water wells). So far NPT is providing to Saudi
Aramco only Production Logging Tests (PLT).
Open and/or cased hole logs are run in wells during drilling/workover operations to
obtain information about the reservoir, the borehole, and/or tubulars or to assist in
resolving a downhole problem. These logs are run individually or in combination,
depending on the type of information desired. The logging program, developed by
RDD, is included in every drilling/workover program, as dictated by Reservoir
Management and Exploration Departments.
Logging tools are commonly run in combination. The conventional triple combo
includes:
• Density/Neutron/shallow-Deep Resistivity, together with Gamma ray/Caliper/
Casing Collar Locator/Spontaneous Potential.
• By adding a sonic log, it becomes a Quad Combo. Other tools such as
borehole imaging, formation tester, and NMR may also be combined.
In planning logging jobs, RDD is responsible to optimize how many logging tools
should be included in one tool string. These logs are usually run from total depth
(TD) to between 50 ft or 100 ft above the 7” liner shoe, in order to put the logs from
different runs and hole sizes on depth. The following sections list the most
common combinations of logs run in Saudi Aramco during drilling operations.

These tools are applicable in all wells drilled with low salinity or
non-conductive drilling fluids. If the borehole fluid salinity is high,
then a Laterolog tool should be run instead of an induction log.
RDD engineer will make this decision prior to logging.

After logging with the D/N/GR/CAL (density, neutron, gamma ray, and
caliper) to above the 7” liner shoe, it is a common Saudi Aramco practice to
continue logging with only the N/CCL to 100’ above the 9-5/8” casing shoe for
geological correlation. The logging speed should not exceed 60 fpm to
ensure data quality.

Neutron logs are almost always run together with a density log and are
primarily used for:
• Porosity determination
• Lithology determination
• Gas-oil contact identification
2.3.1 The STAR tool has the added advantage of acoustic imaging
capabilities, which extends its application to wells containing non-
conducting fluids. For non-conductive mud systems, Halliburton uses
OMRI and Schlumberger uses OBMI.

2.9.1 The MSCT drills into the formation with a diamond-tipped rotary core bit.
At the end of its stroke, the bit breaks the core sample off. The bit retracts
back into the tool where the core is ejected from the bit into a retrieval
tube. Once the core is in the tube, the MSCT drops a marker on the core
sample to separate the samples. This method of recovery reduces
damage to the core samples, allowing more accurate assessments of the
core data.

The MSCT tool can obtain up to 50 core samples in one trip. Recovered
samples are generally large enough for conventional core analysis.
2.9.2 The Baker Atlas Rotary Coring (RCOR) instrument is designed to take up
to 60 core samples. The tool is designed to operate in harsh subsurface
conditions cutting samples 1” in diameter and up to 1.8” in length.
2.9.3 The SWC tool obtains cores ranging in size from 0.69” to 85” in diameter
and up to 2” in length. Up to 50 core samples can be obtained on a
single run using the Coregun.
When using the 4-arm caliper tool such as a dip-meter or Borehole Geometry
Tool (Baker Atlas), the Borehole Profile-Cement Volume log can be generated.
This log is computed using caliper and deviation data, which allows calculation of
the amount of cement needed to set a particular size of casing. The log
information is used for Borehole and annular cement volume

B) Baker Atlas and Halliburton use the FDN (Fluid Density Log –
Nuclear) which measures fluid density by injecting gamma rays by a
radioactive source in the flow stream. The returning gamma rays
detected by the gamma ray detector are related to borehole fluid
density. The FCAP (Fluid Capacitance), also referred to as WHI
(Water Hold-Up Indicator), complements the FDN for holdup
measurements.
2.11.3 CAL: The Caliper log is needed to determine hole size for flow
calculations, particularly in irregular boreholes.
Schlumberger TDT (Thermal decay time), Baker Atlas PDK (pulsed decay tool)
and Halliburton TMDL (thermal multi-gate decay tool) are all pulsed neutron
capture (PNC) sigma logging tools used for
• Identify fluid contact
• Estimate water saturation
All PNS tools can also be run in PNC mode, i.e., it can be run for sigma logging.

Other logging services are also provided by wireline Logging Service Companies.
Details of these logs are covered in other sections of this Manual as follows:
• Freepoint Indicator: See Chapter 5, Section D (Explosives).
• String Shot: Back-off: See Chapter 5, Section D (Explosives).
• Chemical Cutter: See Chapter 7, Section A (Fishing Tools).
• Logging While Drilling tools: See Chapter 5, Section E.
• Jet Cutter: See Chapter 7, Section A (Fishing Tools).
