MIDTERM EXAM IN ETHICS

1. Can ordinary animals like dogs and cats be moral? Why? (10 points)
• I would no. Cats and dogs cannot me moral except for those who are
trained but when we say ordinary cats and dogs it is a BIG NO for me.
For instance, Dog and cat can urinates anywhere even if in a very
crowdy place because they don’t mind their environment. They are
irrational beings unlike humans that are rational. That is why humans
are also known as the highest form of animals
2. What is a moral standard? Distinguish it from non-moral standard. (10
Points)
• Moral standards are those concerned with or relating to human
behaviour , especially the distinction between good and bad
behaviour. Moral standards involves the rules people have about the
kinds of actions they believe are morally right and wrong while,
• Non-moral standards refer to standards by which we judge what is
good or bad and right or wrong in a non-moral way. Hence, we should
not confuse morality with etiquette, law, aesthetics or even with
religion. As we can see, non-moral standards are matters of taste or
preference.
3. What is a moral dilemma? Cite a situation. (10 points)
• It is a situation where a person id forced to choose between two or
more conflicting options, neither of which is acceptable. The difficult
of accepting the situation stems from the fact that, whatever choice
one makes, there would be something that one misses.
• For instance, you are going to choose whether to absent in class so
that you can watch Miss Universe Philippines or attend in class but
missed the most awaited competition.
4. What is Heinz dilemma? Do you think the husband was correct in his
decision? Defend your answer. (20 points)
• Heinz dilemma, it talks about the difficult situation the husband found
himself in saving the life of his wife. Following is the brief summary of
the dilemma below:
“Heinz had a wife who was dying of cancer. The doctor said that a drug was
available but it was kept by a chemist who owned the right to sell it. The price
for that drug, however, was so high for Heinz who could only raise a small
amount from friends and donors. He begged the chemist to give him that drug
in return for that small amount that he had. The chemist refused, saying that
since he was the one who discovered it, he had the final say. In desperation, Heinz
broke into the chemist’s house and stole the drug.”
• For me, technically, I would rather do the same as what Heinz did
because as a husband seeing your wife having a critical situation was a
very hurtful to see. If I were in the shoes of Heinz, I totally do not matter
what the consequences is as long as I did what is best for my wife. In this
kind of situation, what matters for me is my wife.
