POSITION PAPER

I. Topic: Will the world be able to feed itself in the foreseeable future?

ll. Position: YES: Shenggen Fan, from ''Progress, Uncertainty and Rising Anti-globalism,"
2018 Global Food Policy Report, International Food Policy Research Institute(2018) Say
yes that the world can be able to feed the world in the future.

lll. Issue Summary:

Shenggen Fan, director-general of the International Food Policy Research Institute,
presents a generally positive outlook
on the ability of the global food system to provide sufficient food for the world’s population
despite a number of non-food
related intrusions that negatively affect the global capacity of the world’s food system. The
UN Food and Agriculture
Organization report, on the other hand, looks to an increase in the world’s chronically
undernourished people, from an
estimated 717 million in 2015 to 815 million in 2017, as a barometer for revealing a
worsening situation, in particular in
parts of sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and West Asia. Given the prevalence of
conflict throughout the globe and the
increase in climate-related shocks to the food system, two major deterrents to food security,
the authors’ despair of
providing adequate food for all without “renewed efforts through new ways of thinking."

A. SUMMARY: For the next 40 years which is the year 2050, The world may suffer from the
challenge of the hunger crisis in the future. Today, there is enough food and more than 7
billion people live today, nearly a billion are malnourished and not eating the right amount of
food because of poverty and unequal distribution. Almost 2 billion will be added to the
population by 2050 but the world can still feed the world if something change will be going
today.

In this century, the world will be getting hungrier but according to the UN Food and
Agricultural Organization, we can feed our world by doubling of making the food production
whether industrial, agricultural products. It is that most developing countries may get richer
and richer. The richer those countries are, the people more wastefully eat. The rich ones will
eat vegetables too as like to poor that eat vegetables. Producing 1kg of beef will make to
take soya based feed of 10kg. The fish in farms have to eat times 3 of the weight of a wold
fish. It will be amazing that the richest consume these rates in the future. It is difficult for the
world to reach the demand if the prediction of economists developed. Then also the
environmentalists say that we are be needing of 2 Earths to possibly sustain the future's
population in 2050.

Based on John Beddington, the British government's scientific adviser, ''Food security
represents a greater threat to mankind than climate change itself."

Climate change will make it more challenging for us as it will make the farmland drier and
hotter and hard to produce growth of crops. This is another problem for us that it can
damage our agricultural products while the northern part of Earth will experience warmth
also rain. This change may benefit more the richer part of the world while the poor parts
definitely experience crops drought. To provide and survive, there in Britain, the farmers
experimenting the foods that in 2050 are viable such as Olives, peaches, apricots, and
almonds as well as staple crops like soya, maize, and durum wheat. All the parts of the
world that are having hot temperatures like India, Arab, and those cold temperatures such
as part of most Mediterranean will become hot and temperature increases year by year
which is somehow alarming. But the thing is the professionals and experts find ways on how
to overcome future phenomena. The British government says that the food productions by
the year 2050 may be survived but with higher prices and will not be cheaper than before.
All countries of the world will be affected and will be the same as of Britain which the prices
become higher. Importing of commodities from one country to another will be absolutely
applied due to lack of food sources which is highly available to a country. For instance, Asia
may export rice to other countries knowing it is one of the products that are highly part of
the eating habit. The countries that are not used to it have no option but to eat rice the same
even it is not popular or unlike the food they eat daily.

Half of the billion people living in South Asia. The Asian Development Bank says that 1.6
billion of the population finds a threat to the security of food there because of climate
change. But a change to support the hunger has already developed so no need to worry
more about it. Maize crops are one of the four important crops the world produced. In fact, it
is also food for animals. Maize is vulnerable to changes in temperature and water problems
and according to a crop expert, Jan Harvey, ''When you look at the graph, under even small
average rises, the line for maize straight go down." Though the production of it now goes
down it is not something we expect to be less produced in the future just like the other
products most especially agricultural products.
B. CONCLUSION: There are many challenges that we may encounter in the future. At
present day, the farmers and other agricultural workers say that they are afraid of what is
happening today and they tell that it is not possible for us to experience hunger as different
problems they are suffering right now in the line of climate change, pests, and diseases,
and changes of seasonal patterns. Whether they are in any part of the world like Asia,
Africa, the U.S., Europe, and others, all of the agricultural workers say the same thing
according to research. But the good news is that we can make a change. We can provide
food for the future if we act now even with little effort we can effectively help the incoming
crisis. The world's leaders must find ways, help each other to be knowledgeable, and act as
one in the welfare of everybody in the next generation. When they extend their help to each
other, a resolution can actually be formed to defeat what may the future brings. By this,
problems like migration, climate change, and most especially hunger can be reduced or
diminished. Preventive measures and solution findings are the things that we should be
involved in right now. There are numerous ways to reduce the chance of hunger in the
future if we look for a bigger future. Experts, economists, scientists, researchers, help
everyone by disseminating warnings and information about what we can do in our own little
ways. Homes can plant vegetables and fruits In their gardens to support their living, farmers
can use fertilizers to enrich the soil of their farmlands and to produce more nutritious and
many agricultural products. This is just an example of how people can help for their own
sake as well as for others. Thru this, we will achieve the aim of feeding still the mouth of the
future human race.
The rich and developed countries must invest and help to achieve the goal whether the way
on how to produce agricultural products are high-tech or low-tech. Capitalizing can make all
survive. The estimated cost per year is about 50B dollars. Farming and industrial foods
should be prioritized as it is a major food contributor to all. People will be encouraged to eat
veggies and other crops than meats and other industrial products.

C. RECOMMENDATIONS:
Addressing the future crisis may be hard to resolve but the thing is there are possible
actions to take to overcome this alarming and arising problem. We all know that agricultural
products are one of the providers of our foods. But there is a hidden problem to it that it
causes climate change to happen. According to experts, agriculture brings an impact on
other issues like climate change and other environmental problems. Due to this, agriculture
sips the water from rivers, seas, lakes, and other water forms that basically affect the
seafood resources that are also the sources of foods humans. If agriculture is always like
this, it is possible to decrease the food resources coming from the waters. Flooding and
pollution also affect the lands by destroying them. There are things that scientists explained
on how to address this doubled-effect by some solutions.
After researching and analyzing the proposed plan for the future. There are five ways to
effectively feed the world in the next decades.

Step 1: FREEZE AGRICULTURAL'S FOOTPRINT

- It has been done through decades the deforestation and clearing the farmlands to plant
other products and crops. This action is getting deteriorates if expansion and clearing of
more lands or forests just to produce other foods. It is alarming if these things continue.
Though crops and other products agriculturally are enough to supply foods to over 850
million hungry people it causes some environmental effects.

Step 2: GROW MORE ON FARMS WE'VE GOT

In Latin America and Asia, the green revolution still in using irrigations, a better variety of
crops, fertilizers, and machines but with major costs. We should now focus on the yields
rather than agricultural production especially In the countries of Latin America, Eastern
Europe, and Africa that has yield gaps between those farming practices and current
production levels. We can actually boost the yield production by organic farming, high-tech
solutions, and high-quality precision systems that can produce in the places which will use it
for several times more. Agricultural expansion is not the key to feed the mouths of billions
of people but if our attention is on increasing yields, the more chance to reduce the
environmental problems and the future crisis of hunger.

STEP 3: USE RESOURCES MORE EFFICIENTLY

- The environmental effects of conventional farming are reducing as we have already the
ways on how to reach high yields. The green revolution relied on unsustainable and intrinsic
use of chemicals that are fuel-based and water. Farmers started to find innovative ways to
apply insecticides and pesticides by the use of machines and high-technology equipped
tractors which have GPS and advanced sensors.
Customized blends of Fertilizers are applied to soils by growers or farmers in order to
reduce runoff of chemicals within the near waterways. Organic farming is a good way in
reducing chemicals and water use. Incorporating mulches, conserve waters, cover crops,
and builds up nutrients, and applying compost are ways to ensure it. The farmers also
become smarter because they replace the inefficient water irrigation systems with other
methods such as irrigation subsurface drip. These techniques organic farming and
conventional helps to improve the yield and land producers.

STEP 4: SHIFT DIETS

- If the grown crops go into the stomach then it will be far easier to feed the billions of
people for the future. About 55 percent of the world's crops calories are directly feeding the
people. Also, 36 percent are fed by livestock. And 9 percent for industrial products. Though
many people consume eggs coming from animals, dairy, meat, but part of it is the calories
that are being given to livestock that makes milk and meat that is being consumed. About
100 calories of grains are feed to animals and we are getting only from eggs of 22 calories,
beef of 3, chicken of 12, 10 of pork, and milk for 40 calories.
Shifting from less intensive meat is effective to consume it. From beef to pork, less
pasture-raised beef, fed-grain chicken. It will lessen the substantial amount of food eaten. In
developing countries, they eat less meat and choose veggies and crops or grains. The rich
countries should eat less meat for the future's food's availability.

STEP 5: REDUCE WASTES

- Tackling the wastes reduction is effective for food's availability. The developed countries or
rich ones waste a lot of foods and 25 percent of calories and 50 percent of foods are getting
wasted before consumed or eaten. In another part of the world which is the developing
countries, the food is lost only between the farmer and the market it supplies due to
transportation and unreliable storage. But in developed countries, food wastes mostly
occurs at home, cafeterias, restaurants, and supermarkets. A simple solution is to preserve
the food in a reliable storage area, eat the leftovers or give to hungry children to avoid
wastage, and prepare only a portion to serve. Encouraging them to do preventive wastage
measures will surely make the world getting rid of hunger and can keep the food's available.
These five ways are already figured out but we just have to think of how we should do it and
to act for a change. It is hard to face the crisis that we will face, the next generation will face
but we know that we can overcome this by helping one another and spreading the
knowledge. Sustaining the Earth's balance and continuous efforts will make unprecedented
things to be certain. We must act, care for nature, build connections with one another, and
what I believe is true, ''The world will be able to feed itself in foreseeable future."

D. IMPLICATIONS TO YOUR PROFESSION

- The problem with food security is a major threat to mankind. Well, when this issue is
implied to my profession, definitely it is one thing that a family would consult ask for
guidance to me tho it is not really something related to my career. There may be families
that are tackling and battling the lack of food security at home because of not having
support from their husbands or underemployment. It is something that families worries
about. The issue is connected with the women and child protection as they seek help and
assistance on how to cope up with food starvation and hunger. Poverty is a major
contributor to hunger and if I become a professional social worker someday, I know it is one
of the things that I have to resolve or give advice to them. This is a challenge for me, for us
to deal with this kind of difficulties that more and more people will be needing the help of
professionals and making them feel that they may combat it today and even in the future. I
am affected by this case and all of us are affected, but sharing the knowledge and lending
our hands to those who really need it will make a change, a better chance.
