What is Multisim?
Multisim Version 12 is the latest generation of the world’s most popular electronic
design and education software from Electronics Workbench. It is a complete system
design tool that offers a large component database, schematic entry, full analog/digital
SPICE simulation, VHDL/Verilog design entry/simulation, FPGA/CPLD synthesis, RF
capabilities, postprocessing features and seamless transfer to PCB layout packages
such as Ultiboard, also from Electronics Workbench. It offers a single, easy-to-use
graphical interface for all your design and analysis needs.

Multisim Educational Editions

Multisim is available in three editions for the educational community: Education, Lab,
and Student. The Education edition is for use by professors, teachers, instructors, tutors
etc., and is typically used for the creation of demonstrations, examples, assignments, or
tests.
The Lab edition is for use by students at school in a multi-station laboratory
environment. It is available either in networked or standalone configurations.
The Student edition is for use by students for home study on their personal computer. 5

Analyzing Components
Multisim offers multiple ways to analyze the circuit using virtual instruments. Some of
the basic instruments needed for this lab are described below.

1. Multimeter
Use the Multimeter to measure AC or DC voltage or current, and resistance or decibel
loss between two nodes in a circuit. To use the Multimeter click on the Multimeter button
in the Instruments toolbar and click to place its icon on the workspace. Double-click on
the icon to open the instrument face, which is used to enter settings and view
measurements.

Figure 1-11: Multimeter

To measure Voltage place multimeter in Parallel with the component (Resistor, Voltage etc).
To measure Current place the multimeter in series with the component. Reference the

2. Wattmeter
The wattmeter measures power. It is used to measure the magnitude of the active
power, that is, the product of the voltage difference and the current flowing through the
current terminals in a circuit.

Figure 1-14: Wattmeter

To use the instrument, click on the Wattmeter button in the Instruments toolbar and
click to place its icon on the workspace. The icon is used to wire the Wattmeter to the
circuit. Double-click on the icon to open the instrument face, which is used to enter
settings and view measurements. Reference Figure 1-15 for more details.

3. Agilent Multimeter
1. The Agilent Mulitmeter Instrument can also be used to measure and simulate circuits
with more accuracy. To use the multimeter click on the Agilent Multimeter tool button,
place its icon on the workspace and double-click on the icon to open the instrument.
Click on the Power button to switch on the instrument.

4. Ammeter:
The ammeter offers advantages over the multimeter for measuring current in a circuit. It
takes up less space in a circuit and you can rotate its terminals to suit your layout.
Always connect the ammeter in series with the load. To place Ammeter click on
View--- Toolbar --- Select Measurement Components. See Figure 1-17 on how to use
the Ammeter.

5. Voltmeter
The Voltmeter offers advantages over the multimeter for measuring voltage in a circuit.
Always connect the voltmeter in parallel with the load. The voltmeter can be found in the
measurement toolbar.

BASIC INFORMATION
LED
The 74LS47 is an example of an IC device that decodes a BCD input and drives a 7-segment

Display
display. In addition to its decoding and segment drive capability, the 74LS47 has several
additional features as indicated by the LT, RBI, BI / RBO functions in the logic symbol of Figure
4.1. As indicated by the bubbles on the logic symbol, all of the outputs (a through g) are active-
LOW as are the LT (lamp test), RBI (ripple blanking input), and BI / RBO (blanking input/ripple
blanking output) functions. The outputs can drive a common-anode 7-segment display directly.
In addition to decoding a BCD input and producing the appropriate 7-segment outputs. The
74LS47 has lamp test and zero suppression capability. This device may be available in other TTL
or CMOS families.

Figure 1-19
OBJECTIVES:
1. To study the operation of a 7 segment display
2. To verify the operation if BCD to seven segment decider/driver

SKILLS REQUIRED
In order for the experiment to proceed smoothly, the students must be familiar with
1. Seven segment displays
2. BCD to seven segment decoder

PROCEDURE
Step 1. Create the decoder circuit shown in Figure 1-20. Use data switches for the
inputs

STEP 2. Turn the RUN button ON. Move the data switches to HIGH and/or LOW
positions as indicated.

STEP 3. Apply the logic segments specified in Table 1-1 to the corresponding
