1. Most ancient Egyptian homes had just two or three rooms, with workspace on the roof. Rich people built
larger houses, with painted walls, fine furniture, gardens, and pools. In poor families, women wore rough
homemade dresses and men wore cloths tied around the hips. But the rich could afford curled wigs,
makeup, colored clothes, and jewels. They had servants and slaves to work for them.

Rich or poor, all Egyptians valued family life. They married young and had many children. Families
worked together and played together. Egyptian people liked games, stories, music, dancing, and holiday
feasts and parades.

The ancient Egyptians believed in magic and many gods. People built little shrines to their favorite gods.
They wore amulets (charms), and recited prayers and spells. They also built statues representing gods.
The most famous is the Great Sphinx of Giza. This huge statue with the body of a lion and the head of a
man still stands today.

The ancient Egyptians had a complex system of writing known as hieroglyphics. This form of writing
looks like columns of little pictures. These picture-symbols are called hieroglyphs. Not everyone could
read hieroglyphs. Reading and writing was the job of special scholars called scribes.

2. Acid rain is a kind of air pollution. When coal, oil, or gasoline are burned, they release harmful gases into
the air. These gases mix with the moisture that is always present in the air and form weak acids. Wind
can carry the acidic droplets huge distances. Eventually, these droplets return to the ground as acid rain
or as acid hail, snow, sleet, or even fog.

Acid rain looks, feels, and tastes just like clean rain. For humans, walking in acid rain, or even swimming
in a lake polluted by acid rain, is no more dangerous than walking or swimming in clean water. But acid
rain is extremely harmful to the environment.

When acid rain gets into lakes and streams, it kills the fish and other animals and plants that live there.
Many rivers in Scandinavia no longer have any fish. All the fish have been killed by acid rain.

The outside surfaces of stone buildings and monuments can also be corroded, or worn away, by acid
rain. Some of the world’s greatest buildings and monuments show signs of damage caused by acid rain.
Acid rain eats away at the steel in bridges and railings as well.

3. Apples are a popular fruit, containing antioxidants, vitamins, dietary fiber, and a range of other nutrients.
They may help prevent several health conditions because they have varied nutrient content. Apples
come in a variety of shapes, colors, and flavors and provide a range of nutrients that can benefit many
different aspects of a person’s health.

Apples make a quick and easy addition to the diet. Eat them with the skin on for the greatest health
benefits. Apples are high-fiber fruits, meaning that eating them could boost heart health and promotes
weight loss. The pectin in apples helps to maintain good gut health. Research has shown that there is a
link between eating apples regularly and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and
diabetes.

Apples also have high levels of quercetin, a flavonoid and may have anti-cancer properties.
People who ate whole apples were 30 percent less likely to be obese than those who did not. This can
lower the risk for diabetes and heart disease.

Raw apples make a great snack and combining them with almond butter helps balance protein and fat
intake. People can also add raw or stewed apples to yogurt, or use applesauce in cooking.

4. The largest bear in the world and the Arctic's top predator, polar bears are a powerful symbol of the
strength and endurance of the Arctic. The polar bear's Latin name, Ursus maritimus, means "sea bear."
In the United States, Alaska is home to two polar bear subpopulations.

What makes them unique is their ability to swim. Polar bears can swim six miles per hour when they are
paddling with their front paws and holding their legs flat. They have a thick layer of body fat and a water-
repellent coat that insulates them from the cold air and water.

Polar bears are living in icy places. Do you know what that means? Polar bears rely heavily on sea ice
for traveling, hunting, resting, mating and, in some areas, maternal dens. Polar bears were listed as a
threatened species in the US in May 2008 because of ongoing and potential loss of their sea ice habitat
resulting from climate change. As their sea ice habitat recedes earlier in the spring and forms later in the
fall, polar bears are increasingly spending longer periods on land, where they are often attracted to areas
where humans live.
