Please read all the information before you proceed to complete the assessment tasks. If
you do not understand any part of these instructions, please ask your trainer/assessor.
Objective of Assessment
The primary objective of assessment is to support and encourage your learning. Assessment
results give the assessor an indication of how well you have learnt in class and or areas you may
need extra support with. The assessments are intended to be equitable, fair and flexible. All the
information, skills and knowledge being assessed by the assessments have been based on theory,
practical and skills delivered by your trainer/assessor during classes, and or during self-directed
study and meet the requirements of the unit of competency.
Students are encouraged to reflect on key observations and issues encountered during their
studies to encourage learning. Knowing what you understand or have mastered and identifying
where you need to improve the critical skills for successful learning.
Your assessor will give you feedback throughout the duration of the unit you are studying and after
assessment results. The feedback given to you will always be to support your achievements and
to monitor your progress throughout your studies.
In the situation where you or your assessor feel that extra support needs to be given, your
assessor will organise a time to meet with you and discuss the options available to you. Your
assessors aim is to ensure the successful completion of your course with the least amount of
difficulty.
Reasonable adjustment will be provided for students with a disability or learning difficulty
according to the nature of the disability or difficulty. Reasonable adjustments are made to ensure
that the student is not presented with artificial barriers to demonstrating achievement in the
program of study. Reasonable adjustments may include the use of adaptive technology,
educational support and alternative methods of assessment such as oral assessment.
In assessing the competence of individuals, assessors must provide for reasonable adjustments to
ensure the assessment principles of fairness and flexibility are addressed. However, assessors
must be confident that reasonable adjustments do not compromise the outcomes of the unit and
the integrity of the qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued as certification of
achievement.

Unit Summary :
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to incorporate safe work practices
into own workplace activities. It requires the ability to follow predetermined health, safety and security procedures
and to participate in organisational work health and safety (WHS) management practices.
The unit applies to all tourism, travel, hospitality and event sectors and to any small, medium or large organisation.
All personnel at all levels use this skill in the workplace during the course of their daily activities.
The unit incorporates the requirement for all employees under state and territory WHS legislation, to participate in
the management of their own health and safety, that of their colleagues and anyone else in the workplace.
They must cooperate with their employer and follow practices to ensure safety at work.
No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of
publication.
S (S) = Satisfactory
Or: (NS) = Not Satisfactory (requires more training and experience or evidence to complete
the assessment).
You must achieve a satisfactory result for all components of the unit tasks to be deemed overall
Competent (C) in this unit.
Should you not be successful in your attempt your assessor will provide directive feedback
to guide to success in your second attempt; i.e. reassessment.
You will be given two (2) submission opportunities of which will be at no cost to you. If a
you fail after the 2nd submission, you will need to go through the reassessment process,
but this will incur a
fee. Please refer to the fee schedule located on the website.
Assessment reasonable adjustment may be exercised by your assessor at their discretion.
Where a student does not agree with the Assessors decision they should first discuss the issue
with the assessor and try to reach an understanding of the decision and a way forward to get the
issue resolved.

Manual handling is that when organization use force to physical move something or someone. It usually
involves pushing, pulling, lifting, lowering, holding and carrying. In hotel, almost half of injuries involve
manual handling.
1. Planning the lift
Involves assessment of weight of material and load.
Analysing requirement of support or team lift and utilization of equipment.
Planning the path to understand the movement of load, decreasing the distance and analysing
things in way.
2. Getting in position
Placement of feet slightly apart so that posture of employee must be stable not wider than shoulders.
Bending knees not back.
Getting firm hold on load
Keeping load close to body.
Straighten legs to lift and using leg muscles not back.
Moving smoothly and avoiding quick movements.
5. Safe posture
Garry sekhon
Posture refers to way that individual holds body. Good posture defence back and neck of person.
Movements like cooking, stretching, pulling and bending can also strain muscles of individual. There are
various tasks in hotel where safe posture protects employee if they use safe posture.
6. Avoiding tiredness
In hotel work, people usually get tired due to their shift tasks, long hours or being physically active. It is
considered as easier to make mistakes and getting injured when person is tired.
There two essential ways of avoiding tiredness
Rotating jobs: This involves doing heavy tasks and then changing to a lighter task for a while or
changing
from boring repetitive task. This means utilizing different muscles or using them in different
techniques so that they have appropriate opportunity to recover (Jiang, 2019).
Taking Breaks: Person should take breaks between the task they perform for relaxing the muscles.
Short rest
breaks are important for recovery than less long breaks.
7. Safe utilization of equipment: Always unplugging electric equipment before cleaning them and never
using piece of equipment if electrical cord is frayed. Electrical leads must not be wrapped around
electrical equipment while utilization and never using electrical equipment near water.
8. Effective with electrical equipment: Person should avoid using equipment which are not safe and also
consider that equipment they are using must be safe, not damaged or unsafe.
6. Appropriate handling of harmful substances: Major dangerous substances are utilized in hotels such
as cleaning materials. It can also damage health and cause injury so organization need to learn the
ways to handle them effectively.
9. Using PPE: Eye protection, body protection, hearing protection, respiratory, foot and head protection
must be used by individual.
10. Identification and controlling hazards: Worker should identify things that may cause injury or illness.
Bullying is considered as hazard which can causes stress and also lead to mental health issues or
violence.

defense and effectiveness through towards the lowest and least effective protection.
Hierarchy involves:
1. Elimination of hazards and Risks: It can be accomplished by installing highest level
of defense and most reliable control.
2. Reducing the risk: It involves substitution of risk with lower risks, isolating individual from
risks, decrease chances by engineering modifications and transformation in work systems.
3. Administrative controls: Involves lower level of defense and less reliable control. It also
involves utilization of managerial actions to reduce hazards exposure and decreasing the
level of harm.
4. PPE (equipment for personal protection): It involves utilization of effective personal
protection equipment for protection of individuals from harm.
