Guanajuato is flooded with light. The sun beats down with brilliant intensity upon
its flat-roofed
houses, fills with purple darkness their windows and doorways, gives bulk to solid
forms, draws
clean the line that separates surrounding hills from light-drenched sky. The valley
in which the city
dozes is seven thousand feet above the sea. Narrow cobblestone streets circle
through the old center,
then begin to climb into the hills. At the outskirts trees become discouraged;
ridges rise bare and
brown into a sky deep, remote, free from haze, standing out sharp against the
light-filled emptiness
of space.
He whose eyes have been nourished on these clear forms, solid volumes, and light-
filled space
will never be altogether at home in the pale yellow sunlight and soft outlines of
Paris treetops and
towers, where the light is diffused by haze that forever hints of rain. A boy bom
here may get lost
for a while in the Paris fashions of his day and experiment inadequately with
fugitive flecks of light
and blurring washes of haze in which outlines waver, planes merge, and objects lose
their volume;
but he can never really find himself as a painter until he has rediscovered the
strongly defined forms,
pure colors, clear atmosphere, and omnipresent flood of light that gives solidity
to all the objects it
illumines without seeming itself to appear upon the scene at all.

Of toil, is what we covet most; and yet
How clay shrinks back from more quiescent clay!

Of paying debts, which creditors regret)
Lets out impatiently his rushing breath,
Less from disgust of life than dread of death.

The worst to know it:when the mountains rear
Their peaks beneath your human foot, and there
You look down oer the precipice, and drear
The gulf of rock yawns, you cant gaze a minute
Without an awful wish to plunge within it.

T is true, you dontbut, pale and struck with terror,

Retire: but look into your past impression!
And you will find, though shuddering at the mirror
Of your own thoughts, in all their self-confession,
The lurking bias, be it truth or error,
To the unknown; a secret prepossession,
To plunge with all your fearsbut where? You know not,
And thats the reason why you door do not.

The movement validated strong emotion as an authentic source of aesthetic

experience, placing new emphasis on such emotions as trepidation, horror and terror
and awe especially that which is experienced in confronting the sublimity of
untamed nature and its picturesque qualities, both new aesthetic categories.

It was one of Emilys earliest pleasures to ramble among the scenes of nature; nor
was it in the soft glowing landscape that she most delighted; she loved more the
wild wood walks, that skirted the mountain; and still more the mountains
stupendous recesses, where the silence and grandeur of solitude impressed a sacred
awe upon her heart.

but I did not watch the blossom or the expanding leavessights which before always
yielded me supreme delightso deeply was I engrossed in my occupation.

Every night I was oppressed by a slow fever, and I become nervous to a most painful
degree; the fall of a leaf startled me, and I shunned my fellow-creatures as if I
have been guilty of a crime. Sometimes I grew alarmed at the wreck I perceived that
I had become; the energy of my purpose alone sustained me:

insisted on the intrinsic value of a work of art and focused attention on the
individual work alone as an independent unit of meaning. It was opposed to the
critical practice of bringing historical or biographical data to bear on the
interpretation of a work.

From the overgrown foliage threatening to overtake the neglected environments to

the tired inhabitants wasting away their days, there's a somber tone that permeates
this storybook adventure. I was struck by that desperation in the whimsical poetry
of the dialogue; conversations are constructed with overtly meticulous rhymes that
betray the bewilderment building below the surface.
Thorns rein you in, waterfalls and gales push you away, and those restrictions echo
the themes of imprisonment. You're not free; you're trapped and scared and
desperate to return home, and those aerial barriers further those feelings.

No longer did I hold back. Overwhelmed enemies would surrender, desperate for
respite, and as they walked toward me with arms raised above their heads, I would
maniacally laugh as I lit their heads on fire.

And as the moon rose higher the inessential houses began to melt away until
gradually I became aware of the old island here that flowered once for Dutch
sailors eyes a fresh, green breast of the new world. Its vanished trees, the
trees that had made way for Gatsbys house, had once pandered in whispers to the
last and greatest of all human dreams

The pattern of the soup-plates, the stiff folds of the napkins, which rose by the
side of each plate in the shape of arum lilies, the long sticks of bread tied with
pink ribbon, the silver dishes and the sea-colored champagne glasses, with the
flakes of gold congealed in their stems--all these details, together with a
curiously pervasive smell of kid gloves, contributed to her exhilaration, which
must be repressed, however, because she was grown up, and the world held no more
for her to marvel at.
