Physical Education Teaching Philosophy

As a physical education teacher, I will teach the whole child and encourage my students

to invent their own solutions through creative thinking and discovery. As educators, our job is to

challenge and encourage students’ exploration of their knowledge while provide them with the

tools needed to have the confidence to take on challenges on their own. Physical education

provides students with health-related and skill-related fitness concepts and skills that will help

students create an environment that promotes the development of lifelong movers. Through the

experiences students will have in PE, they will develop the skills is each learning domain.

Students will learn the psychomotor skills necessary to be successful in different physical

situations, learn the affective skills such as social and personal responsibility and respect, and the

cognitive skills about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

My lessons will be student-centered because no one student is the same as another and

each student has different needs that should be catered to when learning. Creating a positive and

safe environment for my students where they feel confident performing in class without

judgement or feel they will fail, will help students gain the confidence needed to be successful in

and out of the classroom. I want to incorporate guided discovery and exploration as methods in

my classroom. When students are actively participating in discovering knowledge, it facilitates

deep learning on the part of the student. Students can take part in problem solving situations

where they can draw on their own experience and prior knowledge, interact with their

environment by exploring and manipulating objects, ask questions or by performing

experiments.
My goal for using assessments is to get a better understanding of where my students are

in different skills. Assessments contribute to student leaning because once seeing where my

students are, I can adapt my lessons to the students’ needs. I will incorporate multiple

assessments into my teaching, including pre and post-tests, journals, and take-home assignments.

These assessments help give me and my students a better understanding of where they are in

different skills while also giving them the opportunity to discover activities they enjoy. Diversity

will affect the classroom in a sense that every student will be treated with respect and not be

treated differently because of their background. I will make sure equity is enforced in my

classroom, consider diverse learning styles, and integrate diverse perspectives into my teaching

by understanding students learn in different ways and to offer teaching styles that will benefit

each one of my students.

Physical education teaches students more than just games; it gives them social,

communicating, and team-working skills, as well as ways to be physically active for a lifetime. I

strive to provide students with the tools that will create physically literate individuals in and out

of the classroom.
