Assessed Assignment Question One Weighting: 40%

A critical review of one recent research article from relevant academic refereed journals.

Choose one recent academic Article from a reputed refereed journal with the topic relating to the issue of Shari’ah
compliance and regulatory framework of Islamic banking and Takaful (Islamic insurance). The paper should be recent and

dated no earlier than January 2015. Articles before January 2015 will not be accepted. Your tutor will need to approve the
Article you have selected before you attempt this assignment.

You are required to write a critical review of the chosen Article. The word count limit is 2000 words maximum. Your review
should address the following:

• Identify the main focus and arguments of the author(s). (Don’t get stuck in examples!)
• Identify any explicit theory used in the paper and any implicit approach that the author(s) might have.
• Identify the evidence base used to support the arguments
• Briefly note any concerns you have about (a) use of theory; (b) reliability and validity of evidence base
• Ask yourself questions about the study, such as:
• What problems/issues does each paper address? Why is it important? Is the method good? Are the findings
supported by evidence? Are they unique and supported by other work in the field?
• Critically discuss the merits of the key ideas advanced by the author.

viewpoints and draw conclusions. In particular, be able to identify the key
focus, and critically evaluate explicit theory/implicit research approaches
employed, research methods, evidence base used to support the arguments, and
strengths and limitations/weakness of academic works.
• Ability to communicate effectively: logical, well structured, clear and concise
writing; convincing, coherent arguments and recommendations; free of
