What Are The Pre-Engineered Building Structure?

Pre-engineered buildings are building structures that are manufactured at a factory and
assembled at the site. These pre-engineered building structures are customized or built
according to the exact dimensions and shape required by the client and then are
transported to the decided location. On the site, these buildings are then assembled with
bolted connections and are alternatives to conventionally created steel structures.
Due to an increased demand in fast-tracking construction to save time, this new
manufacturing concept of pre-engineered buildings is seen as a welcome move by the
industry. Also called “metal boxes”, these PEBs are economically efficient and can counter
global warming.
COMPONENTS OF PRE-ENGINEERED BUILDINGS
The components of a pre-engineered building structure are:
PRIMARY MEMBER: Primary framing of a pre-engineered building is an arrangement of I-
shaped steel members and frames. The primary frame constitutes the basic structure of the
pre-engineered building. It also has end wall frames that are reinforced with wind bracing,
connecting bolts, and anchor bolts.
SECONDARY MEMBER: Second framing is actually cold-formed members, which can be of
different shapes like Z, C, etc. also known as “Purlins”. These help and support the primary
framing and wall Paneling. The Purlins add to the overall stability of the structure and are
easily available in different shapes and sizes and thicknesses, ensuring that there is no extra
cost for production and no wastage. They can be easily mounted on the pre-engineered
building, are lightweight, resistant to corrosion, and robust in nature.
ROOF & WALL PANELS: In this group, tin shades and curtain walls made from glass and
rolled steel sheets are included. The frame of this foundation is built to withstand the force
of the wind and other acting loads. Special roofing sheets are also made for colder areas to
minimize energy usage.
SANDWICH PANELS: The sandwich panel consists of three layers where a non-aluminum
core is inserted between two aluminum sheets.
Other accessories such as mezzanine floors, bolts, insulation, etc created as per the need of
the pre-engineered building structure.
ADVANTAGES OF PRE-ENGINEERED BUILDINGS
The many advantages of pre-engineered buildings are:
QUALITY CONTROL: Quality control is the biggest advantage of pre-engineered buildings as
they are created beforehand taking into consideration the standards. These buildings are
made under the supervision of a Quality Control Engineer inside the factory.
REDUCTION IN COST: A pre-engineered building structure lowers the cost used in the
designing and manufacturing of the structure and onsite erection cost.
SAVES TIME IN THE CONSTRUCTION: The usage of software for the drawings and the
designing of the structure lessens the overall construction time. It also allows faster
occupancy and revenue realization for building owners.
LOW MAINTENANCE COSTS: Standard quality paints are used for the steel structure and the
environment ensures long durability.
WARRANTY ON PEBs: Pre-engineered buildings commonly have a warranty period of 20
years by the manufacturers.
DISADVANTAGES OF PRE-ENGINEERED BUILDINGS
There are a few disadvantages associated with pre-engineered buildings such as:
RUST OR CORROSION SENSITIVE: The quality of steel used is a big deciding factor for the
sensitivity of the pre-engineered building. If the quality is low-grade, then it damages the
pre-engineered building structure and reduces the lifespan of the same.
INSULATION COST: The insulation of PEBs against extreme weather may add to the costs.
However, new technologies are emerging to manufacture PEBs to suit the local climatic
conditions at the factory itself.
APPEARANCE: When the structure is left exposed, then it may not be as attractive as
expected. The final look of the structure matters a lot for a pre-engineered building.
HOW TO DECIDE IF YOUR PROJECT REQUIRES A PRE-ENGINEERED BUILDING?
The suitability of a pre-engineered buildings for your project is debatable, for which HRS
Infrastructure can guide you in taking the right decision. Whether the project requires a
conventional steel frame or a PEB, HRS Infrastructure will not let you sacrifice either the
design or the creativity for your project. By teaming up with HRS Infrastructure in the
building planning phase, you can get your project customized as per the requirements of
the project.
