WRITING TEST
WRITING AN
INFORMAL LETTER
1. Read the letter Lisa has received from her grandfather.
3 I’m glad to hear that you have got the new smartphone you wanted
so much!
Me and your grandma have been practising a lot, but it’s still hard
to use these new gadgets. I don’t know if I will be able to do that
online meeting with you on your birthday.
The more I practise, the more I think technology is too complicated
for me. I don’t know what else to do!
What about school? How is it going?
5 Love,
6 Grandpa John

WRITING A REPORT

WRITING TEST
1. A group of English students is going to visit your school through an Erasmus
programme.
Their project is to learn about the impact of technology on Portuguese schools.
You have been asked to carry out a survey among students at your school on the use
of smartphones in classes. Then you should write a report to present to the group of English
students.
a) _______________________________________________________
The aim of this report is to evaluate the use of the smartphone by
Portuguese students in class. It is based on a survey of about 100
students in the 10th grade.
b) _______________________________________________________
The majority of the students surveyed use their phone when the teacher
allows them to. They think it is a useful tool for research and also for
doing learning activities online. They mentioned it is motivating and
makes the learning process easier and more natural.
c) ______________________________________________________
A few students pointed out that they sometimes find it difficult to keep
focussed on learning when they have access to their phone. For that
reason, they believe that it is a tool that should be avoided in class. For
them, there are others tools which should be promoted, due to the great
amount of time teenagers already spend on their phones outside
classes.
d) ______________________________________________________
Smartphones are often seen as a way to motivate students and help
them improve their knowledge. However, for many, they can be
misused and may become an obstacle for learning. I recommend that
teachers do not allow the use of phones in class on a regular basis, but
only sometimes. Perhaps they could also consider the choice of
interesting activities that would make students forget they could be
doing other things with their phones.
