System
Project Name: Heart of Doha
Project Address: Qatar
Client: TIME (Turner)
Date: 09-05-11
Technical Consultant: Steven Woolley s.woolley@stoeu.com
SPECIFICATION OF MATERIALS
PROPRIETARY RENDER
160 Sto AG provides a range of high performance render systems comprising levelling
coats, reinforcing render and decorative finishes.
StoRend Flex
A specialist anti-crack render system for use on existing flat rendered surfaces or
StoVentec Render Carrier Board. It is particularly recommended for use with the Sto
Ventec Façade System (See section H92).
The system comprises Sto Armat Classic, a fibre reinforced factory batched cement
free reinforcing coat, with Sto glass fibre mesh reinforcement embedded to provide
additional crack resistance. StoRend Flex can bridge existing (non-live) cracks and
board joints without the risk of cracking.
System components:
Sto Armat Classic: cement free, water based, fibre reinforced, highly flexible render.
Min thickness 3.0mm.
Sto Glass Fibre Reinforcing Mesh.
Decorative Finish Renders: Stolit acrylic resin render.
Consult Sto AG technical literature for details. Sto AG are able to assist with design
and provide a specification service and it is recommended that they are consulted
early in the design process.
Sto Building with conscience.
1
Notice: This document is a proposal which describes the basic function of an External Render system. The detail solution does not
result in any liability for the company Sto Ltd. As the specific nature of the project in question was not known, no allowance is
made for it in the solution. If necessary, the solution must be modified by a suitably trained architect / planner / contract
administrator / applicator after examining the project and the local conditions as well as all construction law and other rules and
regulations (e.g. fire protection, physical properties, technical principles etc.). Use of this solution does not absolve the
architect / planner / contract administrator / applicator / user of their duty to examine local conditions and to observe any
applicable rules and regulations.
Manufacturer:
Sto AG:
Details as above
System Reference:
StoRend Flex
Substrate / Background:
Steel / Aluminium support taken elsewhere. The substructure to which the
StoVentec Render Carrier Board is to be fixed shall have a surface width of no less
than 80mm to allow correct application of the Sto specified fixings, and shall be at
no greater than 600mm centres.
Sto self-drilling / tapping screws are suitable for use into aluminium 1.0 — 3.0mm
thick and mild steel 1.0 — 2.0mm thick.
Due to the high thermal conductivity of steel and aluminium, it is advisable to apply
Sto Thermal separation Tape to all metal surfaces onto which StoVentec Render
carrier Board is to be affixed.
WIND LOADING: Imposed loads on the façade will vary depending upon building
height, shape, location and proximity of surrounding buildings. This may affect the
required batten centres and fixing pattern. Wind Loading should therefore be
calculated to BS 6399 Part 2. Loading patterns should be subdivided into zoned
areas throughout the façade.
TO ENABLE ECONOMIC DESIGN, ACCURATE CALCULATIONS INDICATING
NEGATIVE WIND LOADS MUST BE PRESENTED TO STO LTD AT THE
EARLIEST POSSIBLE OPPORTUNITY.
Render carrier:
Note:
All cavities behind the StoVentec Render Carrier Board should be ventilated to
avoid the possibility of moisture build up and subsequent decay of the supporting
structure.
Cavity Barriers
PLEASE NOTE:
In accordance with Section 10, approved document B of The Building Regulations',
it may be necessary to include cavity barriers within the construction to prevent the
passage of fire from one building compartment to another by means of a cavity.
Guidance is given in tables 13 and 14, and diagram 31 of the approved document.
As the cavity behind the StoVentec render carrier board should remain both drained
and ventilated (unless an alternative solution is used), this may require the use of
suitable intumescent fire barriers.
Such cavity fire barriers are neither specified nor supplied by Sto AG. However, Sto
AG is able to provide assistance in the procurement of such products should this be
required.
Preparation:
Substrate requires no special preparation. Make good as necessary.
Levelling Coat:
Not applicable.
Reinforcing coat:
Sto Armat Classic cement-free, fibre-reinforced acrylic reinforcing coat. Thickness
to be such to ensure the reinforcing mesh is fully embedded and a level surface is
provided. (Minimum 3mm).
Reinforcement:
Sto Glass Fibre Reinforcing Mesh with symmetrical interlaced glass fibre made from
twisted multi-end strands, styrene butadiene coated to provide a high resistance to
alkali attack and is manufactured so as to prevent laminar movement and
deformation.
For applications in high traffic, vandal prone and anticipated impact areas additional
reinforcement shall be Sto Armor Mat - a specially developed heavy duty, double
strand, interwoven glass fibre mesh styrene butadiene coated.
Areas where Sto Armor Mesh is to be applied shall be clearly defined either within
the contract documentation or marked on construction drawings.

otherwise. Cut neatly using the longest possible lengths and form mitres at return
angles. Plumb, square and true to line and level, ensuring full contact of wings with
the StoVentec Render carrier Board.
Movement joints:
All movement joints and/or shrinkage zones within the structural substrate must be
replicated in the Sto Ventec Render Carrier Board and subsequent render coatings.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Joints through the Sto Ventec board, where installed on timber or steel framed
constructions that are subject to NHBC inspection must use more robust detailing at
movement joints. Consult Sto AG for special details.
Application generally:
810 Apply coatings firmly to achieve good adhesion, and in one continuous operation
between angles and joints.
Appearance of finished surfaces shall be even and consistent, free from rippling,
hollows, ridges, cracks and crazing.
Finish to a true plane, to correct line and level, with angles and corners to right
angles unless specified otherwise, and with reveals, heads, etc. plumb / level and
square.
Prevent excessively rapid or localised drying out of cementitious coats.
Dubbing out rendering:
Not applicable
Undercoats generally:
Rule to an even surface. Quality of application will have a direct bearing on the
visual appearance of the finished render.
Finish coat:
Even texture to specification.
Additives:
Sto AG products are not to be altered with any additives, except for small amounts
of clean water as directed on the label. Antifreeze, accelerators, rapid binders etc.
are not to be used under any circumstances.
