Defining Relative Clauses
We use relative clauses (adjective clauses) to give
information about the person, thing, place or time
that we mention in the main clause.
A defining relative clause gives information necessary
to identify who/ what we are referring to. We use
relative pronouns and adverbs to form relative
clauses.
When talking about things: we use ‘that’, or
‘which’
I want a job which is challenging.
I want to work in a bank that is not too big.
When talking about people: we use ‘who’ or ‘that’
He is the man that gave me the ticket.
I want to talk to the lady who works in the bank.
When talking about places: we use ‘where’

Non- defining Relative Clauses
Non-defining Relative Clauses provide additional
information which is not essential to understand
the meaning of the sentence. It tells us more about
somebody or something, but it does not define it.
 
We cannot use that instead of which / who(m).
Mr. Jankinson, who is our neighbor, is a wonderful
person.
We cannot leave out the relative pronoun, even if it is
the object of the verb.
I hope I won’t see Jack, who(m) I had an argument
with today. (Here who cannot be omitted)
 
Non-defining relative clauses can be introduced by
expressions like:
all of, many of, etc. + relative pronoun
all of
any of + whom / which
few of
 
Others are:both of, each of, either of, half of, most of,
much of, none of, one of, two of, etc.
There were a lot of people at the party, many of
whom I had known for years.
He was carrying the glasses, many of which were
broken.
 
The relative pronoun which refers to the whole
sentence when it gives extra information to the overall
meaning.
My brother did very well in the exam, which was a big
surprise. (= the fact that he could do well in the exam
was not an expected thing)
