Studying in Hanoi University with a diversity of language, especially English, study skills is an

essential subject to learn effectively and transfer it into life skills. One of the most useful techniques that
i have learned so far in this course is mnemonic. This essay will point out the benefit and the impact of
mnemonics.
There are some advantages of using mnemonic to study. First, mnemonics is a weird word
that spell funny and a memory trick. It can help you learn word more quickly and enhance your
vocabulary with fewer hours of study. Mnemonics can be a word, a memory, a story, a picture, a song, a
dance or anything that you can imagine. Second, mnemonics is to help you remember large amounts of
information with a representative word that you know. For example, you want to learn “truculent”, you
can separate this word as “truc-culent”, referring to the word truc in truck. Because the word truck is
the word you already know the meaning. Then you’ve got these trucks, and they’re huge and mean
looking. So this skill encourage you to come up with sort of crazy visual image, take apart from the word,
use a little piece of it as a clue for yourself to create a story and bigger piece information that your brain
can remember.
Moreover, mnemonics work is that they are basically liking a key chain. When we insert
information around one piece of a material, we are creating a cluster of information that’s going to be a
lot easier for our brain to remember. For instance, the structure of an essay have four points: Point -
your view on the subject. Reason - The reason you think so; Example - give examples of evidence; Point -
Review your point of view. If you try to remember every single word in such a structure it will not be
work by combining the first letters of each word into one word: PREP. This way, every time you want to
express your opinion or write a paragraph about a problem, you will remember the word "prepare"
including the steps PREP: Point - Reason - Example - Point. In other words, you have compressed
information into a simple object, remember easier and longer by these techniques of mnemonics.
Indeed, there are a lot of resources on the web, on a mnemonic dictionary if you are not very good at
coming up with these on your own.
I personally believe that it is a much better use of mnemonics to help our brain to learn a
difficult or long word because this leads to a smarter student with a more positive way in study, and it
also shows a sensible attitude to achievement.
