İNG 003: PROFESSIONAL WRITING SKILLS

Course Content and Description:

İNG 003 is a two-part course: The first part of the course is the Academic Part which includes academic writing
together with its purposes. In this part, the students are to learn how to approach writing academic pieces in a
detailed fashion along with the conventions of writing such as paraphrasing & summarizing and avoiding
plagiarism. The second part covers basic forms of writing related to professional correspondence and business
situations. The Professional Part of the course covers the topics of E-mails, Formal Letters, CVs, Statements of
Purpose, and interpreting data/graphs & charts and putting those interpretations into a Report.

Course Objectives:

This course aims to provide a sound basis of a theoretical framework grounded in academic and professional
writing by familiarizing students with the language, format, style and register, and steps needed to be taken to
while corresponding in professional life and academic writing for their academic life. The students will be able
to develop skills in not only academic writing but also business writing, and express themselves clearly putting
data and statistics into useful language & blending all.

Evaluation:
Although you will be given the rubrics for the assignments, your written works will be
assessed on the basis of the following:
· Knowledge and Understanding
· Content & Creativity
· Format
· Language & Style

Assessment: The assessment of the tasks in academic and business writing will be:

Quiz 2 Paraphrasing &Summarizing 20%
Quiz 3 E-mail Writing 15%
Quiz 4 Formal Letter 20%
Quiz 5 Report Writing 15%
Homework via Uzak 5%
Class Participation 5%

Independent Study outside Class: We recommend you read the textbook and extra
materials after class. Read a book for pleasure and listen to podcasts about subjects
that interest you. Take online free courses from education platforms which partner top
universities and organizations worldwide. Join (or create) speaking club. Keep an
“academic” journal. All these free activities can help you to use your English more
effectively. Feel free to consult your teacher(s) about all of these and more during the
office hours which you will be informed of by your teacher.
Course Requirements:
· The course consists of 4 teaching hours per week.
· The absenteeism limit is 12 hours; you fail at the 13th hour of absence. For add-drop
students, the limit is 10 hours and you fail at the 11th hour.
· Doctor’s report will NOT be accepted for absenteeism.
· You MUST have your course materials during lessons. The materials will be sent by
the instructor. You are expected to read the assigned materials and complete the
assigned tasks prior to the lessons.

· Class attendance and class participation are highly recommended for academic and
professional success.
· All assignments are expected to be completed on time and submitted professionally.
Carefully edited academic writing is expected on all written assignments. Late
submissions will NOT be accredited.
· Plagiarism will be penalized.
· You may withdraw from an ING 003 course within the academic semester in
“vazgeçme haftası” if you meet the criteria.
