Chapter 1
Profile of the industry & organization

1.1- About the Industry

Language plays an important role in business administration and customer satisfaction

in all kinds of businesses, it aims to achieve customer satisfaction from an interaction
with an organization; both in verbal or non-verbal communication. This foreign
expansion creates a requirement for multilingualism to ensure an accurate and
flawless client communication. The belief that the world speaks and understands
English is a myth nowadays. English may be the global language for basic
communication, yet we cannot ignore the rise of China, Japan, Brazil, and other non-
native English-speaking countries like Russia, France, Germany, Netherlands,
Iceland, Singapore and many more. Thus, foreign language skills become necessary
while conveying complex business ideas to clients.

Mandarin has also become significant for business leaders to know and understand
because of the growing economy and purchasing power of China in the global market.
With approximately 1.3 billion native speakers and 917 million people who speak
Mandarin as their second language, no wonder that the language is gaining its
popularity and importance among the business minds across the world. German never
came in competition with English, yet Germany is regarded as the leader in scientific
and technological research, their language has retained a certain niche among the
business people trying to have a foothold in these sectors. With over 572 million
speakers worldwide, Spanish is the primary language of Spain, Mexico, Colombia,
Argentina, Venezuela, parts of the United States. It has been listed as one of the future
languages in a report by the British Council, making it an essential language for
business owners to know or operate in. Other languages like French, Japanese,
Arabic, and Hindi are also being increasingly used in business circles in respective
countries.

The language flows across and touches the global organizational processes like
values, norms, attitudes, customer service work, product design, marketing, hiring,
evaluating, promoting employees, internal reporting, post-merger integration,
innovation, process improvements, teaming, and many more. Language alteration

2
affects these processes and practices simultaneously. It can affect every aspect of
globalization because only by learning languages, leaders can communicate with
native people and cultures effectively, which will further help them to move towards
the future world and global business. Language acquisition is a gradual process and
there are many satisfying milestones along the way, though self-directed study can
help individuals to acquire a language to a basic competency level in one or two years.
It has also been studied that multilingualism makes a person smart and efficient. While
learning a new language, the vocabulary acquisition portion of the brain becomes
active, stimulates growth, and works faster and makes a person more competent. The
importance of multilingualism in business cannot also be understated as language
helps in interacting with clients effectively, learn their culture, and market to the various
countries with different sentiments to establish a successful trading relationship.

There has been growing importance for languages in today’s era where
communications have reached its peak and world has been smaller place. As
globalisation takes toll on the youth, an increasing number of youngsters are inclined
towards learning foreign language.

Benefits of Learning a Foreign Language

1. Enhances Employability:
Knowledge of a foreign language is an added advantage for students at the time of
placements. It adds another feather in their cap and tips the scales in their favour at
times of interview. In today's time companies and especially MNC's prefer students

5
with multilingual skills. Great proficiency in language skills also open up opportunities
for global workplaces.
2. Networking:
A foreign language class is a great place for building one's network. As the class
attracts people from varied backgrounds. Students get a chance to interact with fellow
students from different courses, exchange knowledge base and pick up new skills. A
place like this fosters cross-cultural experience and a better understanding of the world
around us.
3. Creativity:
Learning a new language inspires creativity in students. The coursework of a language
course includes not just learning the grammar, vocab and other language aspects. But
it also encourages the students to understand the culture and traditions of the native
country. They are encouraged to indulge in media entertainment in that particular
language, such as listening to music, watching movies and reading books etc.

Some of the other benefits of learning a foreign language are multi-tasking for when
you learn a new language your skills to multi-task improves. Also, studies have shown
that people who learn new languages are more aware of their surroundings and are
more perceptive and open to change than their counterparts.

2.3 Brief Review of literature:

• The Roles of Foreign Language in Business Administration by John Walsh

Published on August 2010

This paper about the roles of foreign language in business administration, they
indicated that foreign languages play significant roles in import and export companies.
In the managers’ point of view, foreign languages are very important to their
businesses, especially for communication with customers, other companies and
suppliers. The problems in some companies might happen because of differences
between customers. The problems also come from both senders and receivers who
lack knowledge of foreign languages. The informants stated that organizations should
invite professional trainers to help improve foreign language skills in vocabulary and
conversation in particular.

• The Value of Foreign Languages in Business Communication by Racquel Moreau
Johnson & Wales University Feinstein Graduate School Published on February 14,
2013

There are several factors that a company considers when deciding to operate in an
international territory or with a foreign company. Factors such as language and culture
greatly affect the success of business. Being able to effectively communicate ideas
and strategies can be challenging in a new business environment. Determining the
importance of language by a company is crucial to its success. Studying another
language helps to understand the culture of the studied language which will assist in
a corporation’s decision-making process. English is a popular language in conducting
business; however, communicating in other languages is gaining popularity.

• The Role of Language in International Business: English as a Lingua Franca by

Jennifer Storozum published on 2013

As a result of globalization, multinational corporations are struggling to combat the

issue of language in international business communication. This paper analyses the
role of language and language barriers in international business communication, with
a particular focus on English as an emerging lingua franca and its effects on
multinational management. After analysing the language strategy of two multinational
corporations where English was made the official corporate language, KONE in
Finland and Rakuten in Japan, the results of this study suggest that implementing
“English-only” corporate language policies is ineffective at improving transnational
communication and makes recommendations for alternative strategic language
planning methods.

• Language in International Business: A Review and Agenda for Future Research by

Helene Tenzer published on 4 July 2017

A fast-growing number of studies demonstrates that language diversity influences almost all
management decisions in modern multinational corporations. Whereas no doubt remains about
the practical importance of language, the empirical investigation and theoretical
conceptualization of its complex and multifaceted effects still presents a substantial challenge.
To summarize and evaluate the current state of the literature in a coherent picture informing
future research. We encourage scholars to transcend disciplinary boundaries and to draw on,

7
integrate, and test a variety of theories from disciplines such as psychology, linguistics, and
neuroscience to gain a more profound understanding of language in international business. We
advocate more multi-level studies and cross-national research collaborations and suggest
greater attention to potential new data sources and means of analysis.

• The role of language in international trade: How does language affect the choice
of foreign trading partners

In this study we focus on the relationship between international trade and language
barriers by analysing Portuguese exports of goods and find that language does play
an important role in the choice of foreign trading partners although sharing Portuguese
as the common language with a group of countries does not imply exporting more to
those countries as one might expect. We therefore argue for the increase of
multilingual policies in education and more investment in reaping the benefits that
Portuguese as an international language might bring to our country.

2.4- Objectives

Data analysis and interpretation

Data analysis and Interpretation

Analysis and interpretation are central steps in the research process. The aim of the
analysis is to organize, classify and summarize the collected data so that they can be
better comprehended and interpreted to give answers to the questions that triggered
the research. Interpretation is the search for the broader meaning of findings. Analysis
is not fulfilled without interpretation; and interpretation cannot proceed without
analysis. So, both are interdependent.

Frequency Analysis:

Percentage analysis is one of the statistical measures used to describe the

characteristics of the sample or population in totality. Percentage analysis involves
computing measures of variables selected of the study and its finding will give easy
interpretation for the reader.
