Language in Use

a) The index finger of one hand points at someone and the hand is moved up and down
three or four times with deliberate motion („shaking a finger at someone‟).
 “shaking a finger at someone” is something that usually used by someone to
mock other people who have problems with that person.
b) The fist, with knuckles down, moves up and down in short move ments knocking on
something or as if knocking on something („knocking on wood‟).
 “knocking on wood” is something we do to wish good luck, but this is all like
a myth and is just everyone's belief.
c) Shoulders are moved upward and down again, possibly repeated („shrugging
shoulders‟).
 “shrugging shoulders” is a gesture that we usually do when we are asked by
someone and we don't know the answer.
d) Hands are clasped across each other, palm against palm, and forearms move back and
forth; this gesture can be executed in front of oneself or over one‟s head („shaking
hands with oneself‟).
 “shaking hands with oneself” this is what we usually do if someone feels
restless and restless, or waiting for something that has not yet arrived.
e) Hand is held on the stomach, palm inward, and the hand makes a circular movement.
 This body gesture is often used if someone has stomach pain or does not feel
comfortable in their stomach.
f) The tongue moves back and forth over the lips („licking one‟s lips‟).
 “licking on lips” is usually done when the person feels insecure or nervous.
g) The palm of one hand is brought up and slaps smartly against the forehead.
 This is usually done when we are thinking about something and suddenly we
remember or get a new way or answer
h) The hand, slightly cupped, is pulled across the forehead as if wiping something away.
 Someone does this usually when she is tired after an activity or after a long
thought, so she wipes something on her forehead that we think makes us dizzy
i) The index finger is pulled across the throat; the gesture may be accompanied by a
noise that is made with movement of air (and saliva) on one side of the mouth while
the lips are slightly open on that side.
 This is a threatening gesture to someone who considers an index finger to be a
sharp knife.
j) The fingers of the two hands are interlocked and the thumbs move in circles around
each other („twiddling one‟s thumbs‟).
 “twiddling one‟s thumbs” is a someone who usually wants to answer
something she knows and feels nervous, but she keeps trying to answer.
