FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

National Certificate: Information Technology: End User Computing

Module 1
Fundamental Mathematics
This document deals with the formative assessment of your competence towards the outcomes which you need to
achieve. “Formative Assessment refers to assessment that takes place during the process of learning and
teaching” (SAQA: Criteria and Guidelines for Assessment Policy Document, pg. 26).

The formative assessment activities and questions in this section count towards your overall competence and also
prepare you for the summative assessment to follow. Ensure that all the questions are answered in filled giving
examples where asked.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 (AC 1 – AC 4); SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 (AC 1 – AC 5); SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 (AC 1 – AC 6)

1. You have to design a questionnaire to do a survey at the college. In order to do this you have to do the
following:

i. Establish the goals of the project – What do you want to learn?

ii. Identify your target population. Who are you going to survey? Is it going to
be male and female? Is it going to be a specific group of students such as
hairdressing, security, engineering? Are you going to survey the lecturing and administrative staff of the
college?
iii. Determine your sample – Whom will you interview? The first is deciding
what kind of people to interview? The next thing to decide is how many people you need to interview.
iv. Specification of a sampling frame, a set of items or events that it is possible to measure. What can you
measure? Think of attitudes, opinions, age, gender, field of study, height of a person, likes and dislikes,
academic qualifications, income level, transport costs to college, etc.
v. Specification of sampling method for selecting items or events from the frame. Think of simple random
sampling, systematic random sampling, stratified random sampling, cluster sampling. Explain why you
chose your method.
vi. Sampling and data collecting. How are you going to sample your population? Are you going to use
personal or telephonic interviews?
vii. Create your questionnaire – What will you ask. Remember to also include
the scale you will be using. You have to use the following measuring instruments and scales – such as
yes/no.

Goals and Objectives of my Survey

The goal of my survey on the covid-19 vaccine roll out is to help researchers understand the mind set of
the students, admin staff and lectures at my college regarding the covid-19 vaccine. The vaccine is
important as it minimizes the effects of the virus. The members of the public are not forced, or it is not
compulsory for one to take the vaccine however I believe that through eliminating the concerns, fears,
and negativity regarding the vaccine, educating oneself regarding the vaccine is very important to make
an informed decision. As responsible students we can help with this regard, starting with our fellow
classmates, who will in turn set a chain reaction by carrying this information to their family and friends.
It is also equally important to understand the influence social media has regarding the covid-19 vaccine.
My survey will be conducted with 100 students, admin staff and lectures at my college. The covid-19
virus is a threat to all hence I will choose random people and not direct my survey to a specific faculty. I
will try to project my survey with an equal number of male and female participants.
The covid-19 virus is a life-threatening virus that could potentially affect humans in its entity
irrespective of profession, nationality, age, or financial status to name a few.
I am choosing the random sampling method as this is most effective method in acquiring my data.
I will be conducting one on one personal interviews; this will help me understand the individuals
concerns better and to get honest accurate responses.

The data collected from my survey will be forwarded to the onsite covid 19 vaccine researchers based at
my college. I believe this information will assist them in addressing the concerns before the rollout

begins thus ensuring a smooth effective vaccine rollout takes place. 

Dichotomous
Dichotomous means divided into 2. The division of 2 parts is contradictory. It is a method for
determining the identity of something. A dichotomous key is a listing of characteristics. At each step of
the process of using the key, you are given 2 choices, each alternative leads to another question until the

item is identified. 
Likert
A Likert scale is a unidimensional scale that researchers use to collect respondents attitudes and
opinions.

Discrete
Discrete is characterised by gaps or interruptions in the values that it can assume e.g., the number of

daily admissions to a general hospital. 

Continuous Variables
Continuous variables can assume any value within a specified relevant interval of values assumed by the

1.2. Pre-test the questionnaire, if practical – Test the questions with a few of your family members. What
suggestions have they made to you?
I have conducted test surveys with my family, and they were very interested in
answering the questions as they too had concerns regarding the vaccine. They have
indicated that the survey is a good idea in obtaining the mindset of all concerned
regarding the vaccine. They suggested widening the survey to include the elderly as
they will be part of the first rollout of the vaccines. To do this, they suggested I
visit a few old age homes and take along reading material or do a presentation
regarding the vaccines and then get them to answer the questionnaire. This will help

them make an informed decision and make also eliminate some of their fears. 
1.3. Conduct interviews and enter data – Ask the questions. Record the answers to the questions. If this
workbook does not allow you enough space, then you have to use a separate pieces of paper.
Answer below
1.4. Analyse the data – Produce the reports. Calculate statistics and probability
values through the use of calculators. Represent data in the form of tables,
charts and graphs. Use statistics such as mean, median, mode, range, interquartile and to argue a
resolution of an issue. Interpret statistics, and
representations of data.

After conducting the survey, it is evident that there is a lot of concerns regarding the vaccines amongst
all. I believe through the proper education and presentations these concerns can be eliminated.
Pharmaceutical companies and researchers should ensure the public is made aware of the side effects
and are totally transparent in this aspect, as the main concern is the time frame for the development of
the vaccine and the roll out is too soon… Has it been tested properly? This needs to be addressed by the

relevant parties. 

I choose the random sampling process as it gave me a chance to speak to different
people and not direct my research to a specific group of people. If I had more time I
would have increased the number of surveys I conducted and perhaps followed my
family’s suggestion of conducting the survey at the old age homes. Due to covid and
the chance of putting the elderly at risk I opted not to pursue this. 

III. You are working on recoveries after invoicing. One of your clients Rack Computers had a total invoice of
R200 000, they paid R210 000. What is the over recovery and how must it be treated in the books of

The over recovery is R10 000. A credit needs to be passed to Rack Computers for the over payment.
As a company we need to treat the over payment as a liability as it is revenue received for services not
yet rendered. The customer can either receive service for the value of the over payment or be

reimbursed. Until this is done the amount should be treated as a liability to balance the books. 
