Pop Cycle – Semester 3 Lesson Plan

Series Overview
Day 1: Pre-Quiz, Lesson Directions/rubric and start project
Day 2: Student work time
Day 3: Student work time
Day 4: Data display and final presentation adjustments
Day 5: Final presentations and post quiz

Lesson Introduction (Day 1)

5 min: Teacher uses the following handout and the PowerPoint slides here in order to test prior
knowledge

15 min: Teacher explains project directions using the following rubric.


While teacher is explaining directions, the students are listening and asking any
questions when appropriate.
20 min: Teacher displays the PowerPoint template that student must work from. For the first 20
minutes students are first finding a college and calculate their college tuition in 6 years for four
years. After students find the college tuition cost, they must insert a chart that looks like the
following.

Once students calculate this cost, they must subtract this total from the million dollars and now
find two charities to donate 10% of the money to.

5 min: Teacher wraps up the first workday by checking in which how far each student got on day
1 and their plans for next time.

Homework: Students must have found a college and two charities. If they have not, they must
finish this research for homework.

Body (Day 2-3)

Day 2:
5 min: Teacher start off each workday with a check in time and a goal setting timer.

40 mins: Student work independently on their computers completing the following tasks:
-Research each category
-Subtract the cost from the item list
-Add the cost, one image and a chart to each slide

Differentiation:
-Students will a learning plan will have the ability to use a calculator to check their work once
they have recorded it on the cost tracking handout.
-Focus students will have a personalized checklist and the day in which it is recommended that
they complete each of these tasks.

While students are working, teacher is moving throughout the classroom assisting students with
their needs and questions.
Homework: Students must have found a home and car by the end of class time today. If they
have not finished both, finishing this is homework.

Day 3:

5 mins: Teacher explains the goals for this class period


Today, students should have completed the following: home, car, college tuition and charity
donations.

40 mins: The goal for this class period is to research the vacation costs and determine if
remaining money needs to be spent. If a student has less than $100 left, they will not be
completing this category.

If they have more than $100, they will have to invest 2/3 of the money and spend the other 1/3
on anything else they would like.

Closure (Day 4)

For the last day of work time, they will go on to enter their costs into the following table.

Then create the following chart on PowerPoint in order to display the percentages for spending.
Day 5: Presentation and Post Quiz
5 mins: Teacher reviews the presentation expectations

35 mins: Students present their slideshows to the class

5 mins: Students conclude this project by taking the post test, which is identical to the pre-test,
however with a new home and car cost. They will also receive their original pre-test at the end to
compare their improvement after this project.
