Transcultural Nursing Quiz 2

Answer the following questions:

1. Why is it important for health-care providers to be aware of variations in drug metabolism in

the body? What conditions besides genetics have an influence on drug metabolism?
It is important for health care providers to do a drug study to the medicine prescribed
for the patient as different people metabolize drugs based on their normal parameters. Other
than genetics, conditions that should alert HCPs are liver and renal function, age, individual
variation (e.g., pharmacogenetics), nutrition, intestinal flora, preexisting conditions (such as
hypo or hyperthyroidism) or sex differences.

2. How important are technical skills and verbal skills in your profession/work environment as a
nurse?
Communication is central to establishing rapport with the patient. Good communication
results in good assessment, and the nurse must listen to the needs of the patient as they are
the ones that know best about their current condition. Technical skills include that of the
ADPIE, knowing also the right intervention that responds to the patient is an example of good
technical skills. and together with good communication, there is a good flow of care.

3. What are some prescriptive and restrictive practices for pregnant women in your culture?
What are some taboo practices for pregnant women in your culture? What special foods should
a woman eat to have a healthy baby in your culture, and what should be avoided? What foods
should a nursing mother eat postpartum, and what should be avoided?
For the prescriptive, it is believed that cravings for food during pregnancy should be satisfied.
Some pregnant women may also place great emphasis on being tidy and beautiful, believing
that these practices will influence the beauty of their child. For restrictive, some pregnant
women may avoid eating black foods to avoid the birth of an infant with a dark skin tone, and
that they shouldn’t do much work in the house when pregnant. Taboo practices that I am
familiar with are more on the after birth wherein traditional custom in the Philippines dictates
that women should not bathe for about ten days after giving birth. Bathing during these times is
seen as a cause of ill health and rheumatism in old age. Sponge baths and steam baths are used
as alternatives instead. In postpartum, new and lactating mothers are often given rice porridge that
may be served with sweet, salty or spicy accompaniments. Soup made of meat and vegetables is also
believed to help promote lactation.

4. in the context of Western medicine, in what complementary and alternative practice have
you practiced? For what conditions have you used them? Were they helpful? How willingly do
you accept other people's traditional practice?
From my understanding of western medicine, I believe that it is the more modern one,
and technical one that we use today such as surgeries and using machineries to fix ailments. I
practice more on the complementary in which I use pharmacological means to cure an illness.
Sometimes if I lack the funds or just simply know when I can treat it at home, I use evidence-
based practices such as using baking soda when my stomach feels acidic. I believe that they are
very helpful as they emphasize more on the importance of rationale than that of others’. Of
course, I won’t completely close off other people’s traditional practices as I like to use it as well,
including our own. It reminds me of home and somehow the comfort felt by its familiarity, such
as a hilot when something feels wrong or the use of essential oils.
