Prepare Plan Using CAD
This lesson aims to familiarize the students in drawing of a roof plan.
A) INTRODUCTION:

A good architectural working drawing should be transparent, clear, ordered, well-planned,

and accurately drawn so that scaled dimensions match the actual structure and provide the
contractor with the exact details he needs. Architectural working drawings are completed
drawings produced by an architect or draftsman and used by the contractor.

B) READINGS / LECTURES:

DRAWING OF A ROOF PLAN

This lesson is designed to assist you in creating an AutoCAD layout of a successful

roof plan design using the same floor plan developed in the previous lessons.
Some roofs and exterior walls are particularly vulnerable to leaks and water damage.
Roof valleys, the junction of a dormer wall and the roof line, chimney, and skylight
perimeters—basically, wherever there is a lot of runoff or two opposing surfaces cross. These
areas necessitate the additional security that blinking offers.

ROOF is the uppermost covering of a building or shelter that provides protection from animals
and weather, such as rain or snow, fire, wind, and sunlight. It is a house's or building's
external upper covering. It depicts the scale, shape, and materials that should be used in
the roofing system.

TERMS TO REMEMBER:

Eave - is a part of a roof that projects over a wall.

Fascia - is a surface finish material used to cover another surface.
Drip edges - prevent water from seeping under roofing along the edges of rakes and eaves.
Overhang - is the horizontal distance that a roof projects beyond a wall.
Ridge - is the top edge of the roof where rafters meet.
Ridge cap - is a wood or metal cap used for roofing at the ridge.
Ridge roll - a rounded-on-top wood strip used to finish the ridge of a roof, which
is frequently covered with lead sheathing; a metal or tile covering that
caps the ridge of a roof.
Flashing - is a thin material, usually galvanized steel, that professional roofers use to direct
water away from critical areas of the roof, wherever the roof plane meets a
vertical surface like a wall or a dormer. Flashing is installed to
surround roof features, such as vents, chimneys, and skylights.
Valley - is the internal angle formed by two slopes of a roof.

BASIC TYPES OF ROOFS:

There are various types of roof designs that are widely used in building
construction. Among them are:

1
1. GABLE ROOF

A gable roof is made up of two roof parts that slant

in opposite directions and converge at the highest
horizontal edges to form the ridge.

2. HIP ROOFS

A hip roof is a type of roof in which all the sides

slope down to the walls. They are widely used
when eave-line security around the entire
perimeter of a building is required.

3. FLAT ROOFS

In comparison to the various styles of sloped

roofs, a flat roof is a roof structure that is almost
level.

2
4. DORMER ROOF

A dormer roof is a type of roof structure that often

includes a window that extends vertically beyond
the plane of a pitched roof.

5.LEAN-TO-ROOF
A single slope roof with its upper edge adjacent to
a wall or a house. It is a basic structure that was
originally added to an existing house.

6. SHED TYPE ROOFS

It has a flat roof that slants in one direction. They

can be used effectively when there are two levels
where additional light is needed.

3
7. GAMBREL ROOF

It has two slopes on each side, with the lower

slope being much steeper than the upper.

8. DOME ROOF

It is a form of hemispherical roof.

9. BUTTERFLY ROOF

(Also known as a V roof) is a type of roof that is

distinguished by an inversion of a normal roof
shape, with two surfaces sloping down from
opposing edges to a valley near the roof's center.

10. MANSARD ROOF

It is a four-sided gambrel-style hip roof with two

slopes on either side, the lower of which is
punctured by dormer windows at a steeper angle
than the upper.

4
The floor plan created in the previous lesson is shown below, with the roof lines made of
hidden lines.

Figure 1: Floor plan showing roof lines.

5
A roof plan portrays the roof's outline as well as the main object lines showing ridges,
valleys, hips, and openings. The roof plan is a 2D plan view of the roof rather than a framing
plan.

Figure 2: Roof Plan.

SIMPLE STEPS FOR CREATING A ROOF PLAN IN AUTOCAD

1. Change the Roof layer to current.

2. Change the properties of all roof lines (hidden lines - see Figure 1) to continuous lines.
3. Offset the roof line perimeter by 0.20 meter to make room for the gutter.
4. Trim the excess diagonal lines (ridges) using the gutter lines as boundaries.
5. Offset these diagonal lines (ridges) by 0.15 meter on both sides to make room for the
ridge cap.
6. Use ANSI34 to construct a rib-type impact roofing following the arrow for the slope
direction.
7. Locate the position of downspout symbols (DS) using small circle.
8. Make a label for the roof plan.

6
TYPES OF ROOF FLASHING

1. Chimney flashing is applied in three sections across the base of a chimney: continuous
flashing around the bottom, step flashing up the sides, and saddle flashing at the top. The
cap flashing, which is mortared or caulked into the chimney, laps over the top edges of
the other flashings to keep water from flowing behind them.

2. Continuous flashing covers the intersection of a vertical wall and a sloped roof.
Drip edges keep water from seeping under roofing along rake and eave edges. They are
installed under the roofing felt along the eaves and over the roofing felt along the rakes.

3. Skylights frequently have their own built-in flashing. Their curbs are otherwise flashed
with continuous flashing along the bottom, step flashing up the sides, and saddle flashing
across the top.

4. Step flashing is a form of flashing that steps up a roof to cover the area where the roof
meets the side walls of dormers, chimneys, and some skylights. It is made up of a series
of right-angled metal parts that are worked into a course of shingles such that each
section overlaps the section beneath it. The vertical edge of the flashing is normally
tucked under siding or capped with a second counter flashing that is mortared into the
chimney or caulked around a skylight to prevent water from entering behind it.

5. Valley flashing covers the valleys formed by the intersection of two roof planes. This W-
shaped channel is mounted over the top of the building felt prior to the installation of the
roof's finishing material.

6. Vent pipe flashing is designed to fit over flues and pipes. It is cone-shaped and has a
flange at the base that is worked into the shingles when the roofing is installed.
