increasing number of foreign firms targeting the Indian market,
the requirements of legal expertise will only increase, making
law a very lucrative career.

LIFE AT A
LAW SCHOOL
A law school is an inspiring place—in terms of
academics, as well as extracurricular activities. A day
typically involves 4–6 hours of classes, self-study, tests,
making presentations, working on projects, participating
in competitions, attending seminars, and various
recreational activities.
Academics
In the first 1.5 to 2 years of your life at a law school, the focus (in terms of no. of classes & courses)
is more on subjects that are not law related. Only a few basic and core law subjects (e.g., torts,
contracts, and the Constitution) are taught in these years. Later, the focus shifts; and you also get
to choose your specialization.
Moot Courts, Parliamentary Debates, Conferences and Seminars
Moot courts hone your oral presentation skills of arguments, and also provide an understanding of
the art of litigation. In Parliamentary Debates, you get to prepare a motion within a very short
timeframe, deliver constructive speeches, and come up with replies/riposte. Conferences and
Seminars involve paper presentation on current issues, followed by a healthy discussion, leading to
a fruitful conclusion.
Internships
Internships are mandatory part of a law school curriculum. As an intern in a law firm, your workload
can vary from a strictly clerical job (proofreading) to doing research and due diligence. Hard work
and a willingness to take up work are always appreciated. Many law firms also pay good stipend,
which is always an impetus for students to take up more internships.
Sports and cultural activities
One of the most commonly held misconceptions is that lawyers are a serious bunch. In reality, law
school students frequently attend college fests, dance performances, and drama festivals.
Participating in rock band competitions is also not unheard of. On other days, they can be found
spending their evenings engaged in various sports—from table tennis to cricket.
