everywhere, it gives us joy and improves our creativity skills. In this lesson, you will
learn some of the general characteristics of contemporary arts in the context of
Philippine history. It will help us understand that the arts have many forms and
contexts.
What’s In
Good day dear students, before we proceed on the new topic, let us have a short
review of what you have learned from the previous one. Kindly write your answer on
the space provided.

8
What’s New
Contemporary art differs from modern art in terms of historical and chronological
overview. The table below will show a Historical overview of Philippine art focusing
on the classical arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture.
9
I. Pre-conquest
➢ In art-historical terms, it means before the coming of the first
colonizers. In stylistic terms, it refers to the indigenous to emphasize
the idea that our ancestors have been making art even before
colonization. Our ancestors live a simple life of ritual, music, dance,
theater, and even literature. When they told stories about the hunt, this
form of oral storytelling marked the beginnings of literature. When they
imitated the movements of animals, this marked the beginnings of a
theater or play-acting, when they add drum beating and attach rhythm
to movements, they had given birth to music and dance.
➢ There were ethnic musical instruments like pipes, flutes, zithers,
drums, string instruments like kudyapi (three-stringed guitar),
kulintang (array bossed gongs), gansa (flat gong), and agong (large
bossed gong)
➢ Pre-colonial Filipinos have a rich tradition in carving. People of
Cordilleras carve bulul (granary god). Ifugaos produce hagabi (wooden
bench indicating socioeconomic status). Laguna and Pampanga were
known for carving santos or sculptures of saints. Paete Laguna is
known for carving tradition. The Manunggul Jar, from Palawan is a
secondary burial vessel.
➢ The Philippines has a rich textile weaving tradition that imparts
knowledge about people’s belief system: reverence for spirits and socio-
political structure. Ornamentation was also evident in which early
Filipinos adorned their bodies. An upper-class Tagalog was portrayed
wearing jewelry while the Visayans were fully covered with tattoo
referring to their place as “Islas de los Pintados”
10
➢ A new urban pattern for health, education, and governance.
Architect Daniel Burnham designed Manila and Baguio.
IV. Japanese Occupation (1941-1945)
➢ Japanese forces led the formation of the Greater East Asia Co-
Prosperity Sphere, a movement that rejected western tradition.
Japanese sponsored newspapers and magazines such as Liwayway
and Tribune.
➢ In music, the composer National Artist Felipe P. De Leon has been
commanded to write Awit sa Paglikha ng Bagong Pilipinas
➢ Fernando Amorsolo’s paintings like Harvest scene (1942) and Rice
Planting 1942 evoke a semblance of peace. Sylvia La Torre’s hit song
Sa Kabukiran written in Tagalog in 1940 by composer Levi Celerio
(National Artist for Music and Literature 1997)
V. The 70s to Contemporary
➢ Under Martial law, Marcos envisioned a New Society or Bagong
Lipunan, which worked about the rebirth of a lost civilization. This
vision propagated thru an art and culture program that combined
fine arts, architecture, interior design, tourism, convention city-
building, engineering, urban planning, and health.
The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is a premier bureaucratic entity through
which art acquisition, exhibition making, workshops, grants, and awards were
implemented. It was created on June 25, 1966, and inaugurated in 1969. Leandro
Locsin as the chief architect of Imelda Marcos designed the building.
11
What is It
The next lesson will focus on the various contemporary art forms, the criteria in the
selection of national artist awards, and the privileges of a national artist.
It’s through art that we’re able to communicate with the world our internal feelings
as well as our imagination that simply exists inside our heads. There are distinct
types of art such as sculpture, painting, literature, design, music, dancing, theatre,
photography, and movies.
Fine Arts are made primarily for aesthetic enjoyment through the senses especially
visually and auditory. The following are considered fine arts:
• Painting
• Literature
Practical arts are intended for practical use or utility. The following are considered
practical arts:
• Sculpture
• Architecture
Performing art involves movement, speaking, and gestures. The following are
considered performing arts:
• Dance
• Singing/Music
• Cinema
